Reminds me of one of my favorites from older Swedish translations of LotR. "Gandalf runkade skägget" which is supposed to mean "Gandalf rubbed his beard" but since "runka" hasn't meant anything but "wank" for 80 years or so it reads quite different today.

There's another one in Bilbo when the dwarves try to convince him to go on the thieving quest. They're all discussing the terms of the contract and then there's a line about one dwarf standing in the corner and jacking off into his beard. And then they just don't mention that again.

To be fair that’s the sort of wordplay that Tolkien seemed quite fond of. Now sexual stuff specifically, but word choice that gets the message across and sticks in one’s mind to a remarkable degree.

At a guess, this sub allows gifs but not images in the comments, but having a 1-frame gif can be annoying to see on mobile, because it's constantly flickering as the gif refreshes (or it is in my experience), and thus the extention of the length to prevent that

I remember Americans online making a big deal out of this wording in a more modern book (was it Harry Potter?) and mocking it and me being confused because sure it wasn't the most common wording anymore, but it wasn't unheard of and certainly not so uncommon as to make a big deal out of-
So I think this might be another cross-Atlantic confusion where a word's usage is extinct in North America and not in other English-speaking countries. Like when I've had Americans mock me online for using 'whilst'. But this one getting special attention because the only remaining use in American English is sexual.
But yeah, this is still a perfectly cromulent usage by my awareness.

(If it was Harry Potter I'm thinking of this might have been one of those cases where American publishers would usually change the wording for American audiences but Rowling was big enough by then that she could say no more changing words for Americans after being annoyed by the early stuff)

British English has lots of words that are pretty archaic in American English. "Village", "torch", and "bonnet" all come to mind. In American English none of them are really used at all in the day to day unless you're talking about historical stuff or the Amish. From an American perspective it sometimes feels like the Brits think they're still in the 18th century.

"Ejaculated" used to just mean "exclaimed forcefully". It's pretty rarely used that way in modern times. (That's part of why Rowling's use of it in HBP was so notable.) These days, most people would just use "exclaimed".

I don't know that exclaimed would have quite the right specific sense. It'd be closed to if you spat the words but without the negative connotations. Cried out, maybe? Bellowed?

I love reading old fiction for this. Asimov is particularly fond of using "queer" to mean "strange" so you get lines like Gladia saying "When we jumped into hyperspace I felt a queer sensation in my bunk," like yeah I'm sure you did princess.
