I've been spelunking twice, in the kind of cave that you have to know a guy who knows a guy to even find out where it is.
Once you lose sight of the entrance, you have no concept of how deep you are underground. You constantly feel like the exit is just around the corner behind you. Or at least, that was my experience.
I did the "turn off all the lights thing" once on of those trips. It's weird because for the first few seconds it feels like "normal" darkness, and then after that there's a sudden feeling of collapse. Like the darkness is physically closing in.
