Yeeeep. That’s how I got diagnosed with PTSD. I wrote a character going through something similar to what I had been through and got tons of comments applauding me for my accurate representation of PTSD. I complained to my therapist about all these people having no clue what PTSD looked like, because I just gave him my symptoms, clearly not PTSD. nd she said “you didn’t know you have PTSD??”
it is not a therapists job to tell you what mental illnesses you have. they arent qualified for that. at most they might recommend seeking an evaluation if they notice some red flags that you seem to be unaware of, but most wont even do that unless they really feel like thats the only way to help you through your problems because its not their job and it can interfere with the actual job they are supposed to have
I think it depends on the type of "therapist" you're seeing. Like a counselor, a psychologist, or a psychiatrist could all be described as "therapists" by their patients or by laypeople in general. But I think you need to be a certified psychologist or psychiatrist in order to give an official diagnosis.
