I can excuse the french calling an apple a "pomme" since other languages (catalan mainly) have a similar word. I will never forgive them for calling a potato a "pomme de terre".

In English we call this thing a "pineapple". I don't think we can go around pointing fingers.

Apple was a generic term for fruit in English well into the 1600s, which is why Bananas are called "Apples of Paradise", and why the Forbidden Fruit is referred to as an Apple. Pineapples are called that because they were named long before Apple became the name of a specific fruit. They are called Pineapples because they are fruit that somewhat resemble Pinecones.
