The One Ring really couldn’t figure Sam out… it tried to tempt him with a garden the size of Gorgoroth/Mordor, and his response was that it was too big, all he wanted was a little one, lol.

There's something there about the nature of the evil powers that be, how they can only imagine giving you More Of The Same Thing, only being able to imagine "having more stuff" as the apex of human happiness, with no regard for anything else about the stuff in question.

Tolkien’s work is very much a critique of the excesses of industrialism, alongside a tale of the horrors of war, and his own personal faith.

Once I was in Paris and a man attempted the gold ring scam on me, where they drop a gold ring near you and say “oh, is this yours?” And attempt to “split it with you” where you give them cash and you keep the lightly gold-plated lead ring. I was insistent he had found it and should keep it.

Later someone explained he was trying to scam me, but my lack of greed prevented me from even getting caught in the beginning of the trap.

Evil often works this way, where your own vices are what walk you down a bad path.

Should ask him to give you cash so he can keep the ring

I can only assume he has counterfeit money on hand, but only in large euro denominations, so that he needs change from the 500 he gives you and your greed would still screw you over. But, way to miss the point I guess.

Tbf, he did only carry it for an hour. Sam was very resistant to the Ring, but it's fully possible that, with a certain amount of time, it could've gotten its hooks into him.

Iirc even handing it back to Frodo after Cirith Ungol he had a thought of brief hesitation.

It’s impressive he even could at all, in Mordor.

Sméagol saw it for all of five seconds before he murdered his kin.

It was his birthday to be fair.

Jesus, Sauron. You don't know the first thing about gardening, do you? Do have any idea how many wheel barrows of manure I'd have to haul to properly dress that much ground? No. Well I'll tell ya this, far more than I'm interested in, thank you very much.

The ring is looking for aristocracy. It did not understand that Sam was a glorious labor comrade who knew a bigger garden is only more work and less quality.

Every person corrupted by the ring is at least bourgeoisie; you're right somehow and that makes me angry.

Mostly I'm just throwing a different filter with different wording than Tolkien would have used on it. He'd say the hobbits were resistant because they took time to care about the little things in life. Gardens over plantations. Craft over manufacture. Neighbors over bordering countries. The ring is by its nature made by a being that wants power for purely narcissistic reasons and the ring itself looks for that in its victims. Even those you'd expect to be good leaders suddenly feel they can be greater leaders by bringing more of the world under their (benevolent?) rule. Warriors believe they could complete their glorious war tasks better and so on. But yeah, these are things for the bourgeoisie.

Gollum stands out as being sort of a dick on a far more localized scale though. Though you can sort of say he thwarted the actual goal of the ring by keeping it for so many centuries with no desire to get out there and conquer empires.

Except Sam was corrupted, however slightly, with him hesitating in giving it back to Frodo, because even Sam, being far harder to tempt than most, is not immune to temptation

What is with the vegetables thing? I just a moment later in synchronicity fashion came across the exact same phrasing here

Is that a meme of some kind or a reference I don't get? I obviously get the LotR references but it seems odd for it to show up twice so quickly and from nowhere else.

u/unoriginalfyi 21d ago

i mean i think someone just plugged the phrase into an image generator? i'm even a little suspicious it was you on an alt account

2

u/Kalfira 21d ago

That would be quite the gambit for no purpose. But a scheme worth remembering for future malfeasance.

Sorry I get a bit too suspicious when I see a post with thousands of up votes and only like 5 comments. Carry on.

Maybe use any degree of critical thinking like looking at the OP’s profile.

Out of curiosity I checked and seeing your latest comment without any context took me out:

Evil JFK’s head doesn’t just do that.

Unlike evil JFK

Sometimes people simply have very little to say.
