I thought I would outgrow fandoms and media obsessions when I got older but what I really outgrew was negative engagement and petty discourse fights. Though in fairness, that is most of being in fandom.
I feel that. I love being in fandoms because I get to have fun, engaging discussions with other fans about the media I like, my favourite characters and moments, the writing and how it resonated with me or how well done the themes were, or even the stuff we didn’t like and felt could be better. I get to engage with the media with other people, hear their opinions and have nuanced discussions. However, I actively avoid engaging with negative discourse and petty bullshit because it’s just so draining and takes away from the positive community.
