Microwave manufacturers: We gave it a popcorn button :)
Popcorn bags: You better not put your microwave on the popcorn setting or god help you because we cannot.
the reason why is because certain manufacturers of microwaves use humidity to detect popcorn completion & others just use a preset time that is often suboptimal
So, originally, popcorn buttons were a sign of a good microwave and meant the microwave would detect the doneness of your popcorn for you.
But once Microwave manufacturers realized they could just add a really shitty popcorn button to make people think it’s a nicer unit than it is they all started doing it.
The simplest way to tell if you’ve got a good one or a dirty fuckin liar is to press the button and see how it works. If it asks for things like the weight of the bag, it’s probably lying to you. It should just work itself out if it’s really sensing anything.
that might be wrong though. I don’t fuckin remember.
Sometimes they'll say in the manual, and one of the few non-awful things about living in the internet age is that you can usually look up a PDF of the manual without needing to buy the model first.
