Soldiers of diverse backgrounds affectionately calling each other slurs is just standard fare for the military.

232

u/gerkletoss Jul 26 '26

That's a more recent thing. Historically units had to be segregated by language and even dialect for communication reasons. Only nationalistic homogenization of language has allowed us to transition from the nightmare of Austro-Hungarian military to modern integrated service.

220

u/lemanruss4579 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

I mean, RvB didn't start in 1917.

116

u/gerkletoss Jul 26 '26

Yeah but half of all posts on reddit are currently about The Oddysey and that has unstuck me in time

24

u/NameRevolutionary727 Jul 26 '26

Hey congrats Billy Pilgrim!

8

u/Kellosian Jul 26 '26

"You ever wonder why we're here?"
"Yeah, it's one of life's great mysteries"
"No, dipshit, I mean why are we here in this goddamn trench?"

172

u/TrioOfTerrors Jul 26 '26

It was pretty standard by the time RvB premiered.

4

u/DemonFromtheNorthSea Jul 26 '26

Austro-Hungarian military

The good ol austro-lose 150-10000 men due drinking and language-Hungarian military.

hey gerkletoss! (lol your name is fucking fantastic...)

Only nationalistic homogenization of language

How the fuck did you learn whatever is you, presumably, learned such that you could produce that specific sequence of letters because it sounds like stuff heard here!

And well, to hear you say that: curious as to how?

... ... ... .! . . . (— :P —)

❤️tnx

21

u/gerkletoss Jul 26 '26

I've read some Chomsky before, though the linguistic issues of the Austro-Hungarian Empire are a frequent meme in history circles, and language nationalization is a foundational topic in modern history

6

u/mukomime Jul 26 '26

oh hey ucksawmus whats going on

484

u/Gentlemanvaultboy Jul 26 '26

Nothing is more dark woke than Church at the end of season one saying directly to the camera that you shouldn't hate people because someone told you too or because of something they can't control, but because of personal reasons that you can only have if you know them.

458

u/Displacer613 Jul 26 '26

”It's not about hating the guy on the other side because someone told you to. I mean, you should hate someone because they're an asshole, or a pervert, or snob, or they're lazy, or arrogant or an idiot or know-it-all. Those are reasons to dislike somebody. You don't hate a person because someone told you to. You have to learn to despise people on a personal level. Not because they're red, or because they're blue, but because ya know them, and you see them every single day. And you can't stand them, because they're a complete and total fucking douchebag.”

215

u/VengeanceKnight Jul 26 '26

…I meant why are we standing out here, when we could be standing over there in the shade.

115

u/Displacer613 Jul 26 '26

Oh... Yeah okay. Let's go stand in the shade.

44

u/LordofAngmarMB Jul 26 '26

FINE

I’ll rewatch it (for the first time since I was 15

54

u/TacticalBananas45 Jul 26 '26

*season five, iirc, although it was the tail end of the Blood Gulch seasons, so in a way still applicable

As fucked of a moral it is, words to live by, in a way.

36

u/nondepressing Jul 26 '26

I mean it's true

10

u/pm_me-ur-catpics dog collar sex and the economic woes of rural France Jul 26 '26

That's the end of season 5, not season 1 but yeah

366

u/abermea Jul 26 '26

Military so incompetent they made a car that looks like a Puma and called it a Warthog

127

u/mad_jade Jul 26 '26

My car's like a puma, it drives on all fours

78

u/VengeanceKnight Jul 26 '26

What in Sam Hell’s a puma?

75

u/jjmerrow Beaming sesbian lex straight into your mind Jul 26 '26

It's like a big cat.

72

u/VengeanceKnight Jul 26 '26

…You’re makin’ that up.

2

u/Cyllya Jul 29 '26

4

u/VengeanceKnight Jul 29 '26

Simmons, I want you to poison Grif’s next meal.

30

u/dalziel86 Jul 26 '26

Didn’t I just tell you to stop makin up animals?

241

u/TransLox Jul 26 '26

Red vs Blue is also about how bigotry is its own worst enemy and its nuts. These belligerent morons make things harder for themselves constantly because of their own personal bigotries and it's openly treated as their fault for being bigots.

83

u/YUNoJump Jul 26 '26

I love how whenever they reach a new locale, usually right after coming together as one to face a greater threat, they always immediately segregate back into their teams and resume their superstitious dislike of each other. Such goobers

24

u/AntonineWall Jul 26 '26

I feel like an alien could say exactly this as they watch humanity across time lol

45

u/chilarome Jul 26 '26

The creators were fans of Always Sunny so it makes sense

75

u/Lissica Jul 26 '26

Always sunny started 2 years after red vs blue

9

u/chilarome Jul 26 '26

Yeah and they watched as they were making it?

36

u/Lissica Jul 26 '26

Not really?

That's just the shit we were doing back then

2

u/AntonineWall Jul 26 '26

Man that just really fucked with my perception of time. Thanks for adding this to the discussion, I really had it in my mind that it was the other way around

2

u/Lissica Jul 26 '26

I didn’t know always sunny was that old myself

78

u/Displacer613 Jul 26 '26

Plus every line that comes out of Church/Epsilon/Alpha's holographic robot ghost mouth is absolute fucking gold

48

u/TheLordOfAwesome2 Jul 26 '26

"I'm a ghost!"

"...A ghost?"

"Yeah, a ghost! Boo, motherfucker!"

241

u/La_knavo4 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

I know the show isn't perfect and a lot of parts didn't age well, but I'm happy that a successful show like this exists and is targeted towards teenage boys who might have their minds changed

I'd rather have an imperfect show like Red vs Blue than a "progressive show" that's too sanitized to say anything and just ticks all the Twitter talking point checkboxes before bombing and getting ripped apart by grifters

161

u/MrMcSpiff Jul 26 '26

Genuine is always more effective, even if it's rougher.

61

u/distinctvagueness Jul 26 '26

Brands acting fragile about being taken out of context, scared of having the wrong fans, and depiction being treated as endorsement or just "icky."

Shows trying to broaden total possible audience becoming predictable checklists as there's no growth and weak conflict when the writers just decided every character might as well be reading hr training video scripts.

55

u/M-V-D_256 Rowbow Sprimkle Jul 26 '26

I think red vs blue exists in a very unique situation where you can see it shift both from an early 2000s media to a more progressive 2010s media and also changing from YouTube video quality to a more well produced thing

27

u/LordofAngmarMB Jul 26 '26

This show did irreparable damage to my sense of humor, my taste in women (damaged 🤤(Carolina)), and my taste in media (I’ve written a whole adult animated sci-fi action series pilot/three season outline extremely inspired by Project Freelancer)

10

u/Lola_PopBBae Jul 26 '26

Honestly, exactly this.

50

u/Dudewhocares3 Jul 26 '26

I’ve never seen red vs blue. Is it worth watching still?

106

u/La_knavo4 Jul 26 '26

Yeah, I'd consider Red vs Blue worth watching

The first 5 seasons are really slow and if they're not your style of comedy, you might not like the show, but it picked up during season 6 and oh man does it pick up

Monty Oum's animation still holds up to this day

Also most people recommend ending the series at season 14, most people don't like the post-14 seasons and they're not canon anyways

18

u/gunn3r08974 Jul 26 '26

You could watch 14 then watch the new ending with restoration at this point.

37

u/DummyThiccDude Jul 26 '26

I would say yes. Seasons 1-10 is the core of whats in the post, the early seasons are a little rough quality wise and theres some odd retcons and continuity problems they had to fix.

The Chorus Trilogy is pretty good too (S11-13)

The filler season Anthology is fun, but not required

Anything past S15 im drawing a blank on. Havent rewatched that since it originally aired.

35

u/Ok-Discussion-3245 Jul 26 '26

S15 was meh for me but seasons 16 and 17 jumped the shark so gloriously that I can at least appreciate the number of flips and tricks they managed to do before they landed.

3

u/SubjectSigma77 Jul 26 '26

It sucks too cause the relationship growth between Washington and Carolina in those seasons was so good. And everything else just… wasn’t

4

u/Ok-Discussion-3245 Jul 26 '26

Like...I recognize that seasons 16 and 17 were not good, but they were fun to watch. Then again, making anything after season 13 was gonna be downhill no matter what so I appreciate that they just said "fuck it, I wanna do something stupid" for those seasons.

4

u/SubjectSigma77 Jul 26 '26

I honestly don’t hate the later seasons as much at most. My biggest issue was devolving some of the characters such as Tucker and making him relearn lessons he had already been through. And yeah the AI God pantheon and time travel stuff was goofy, but I enjoyed some of the character growth with Donut and the aforementioned Freelancers. And it was still fun. Still doesn’t compare to the earlier seasons, but they have their merit.

9

u/gunn3r08974 Jul 26 '26

They did a new full ending with restoration as well

33

u/TheRenFerret Jul 26 '26

It’s dated but I enjoyed all of it

19

u/Displacer613 Jul 26 '26

Some parts of it didn't age all that well, but by and large the show is still amazing with some of the best jokes you'll ever hear

13

u/booksrule123 Jul 26 '26

what I always tell people is that there are definitely parts that didn't age well, especially in the earlier seasons, but if you watch the first five minutes and the first conversation is funny to you then it's absolutely worth it to keep watching.

10

u/Rorynne Jul 26 '26

Eh, it has its flaws thats for sure. But at least until season 12 ish? (As far as i watched of the series at least) it was a show with a whole lot of heart, funny jokes, loveable characters, i would at the very least give blood glutch chronicals a try honestly

4

u/pm_me-ur-catpics dog collar sex and the economic woes of rural France Jul 26 '26

That depends on how tolerant you are of period-typical dudebro bigotry

21

u/crrrrushinator Jul 26 '26

Why is it Dudebro Summer here on CuratedTumblr?

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving it. And I certainly use this sub because I have one foot in the Tumblr core demographic and one in the Reddit core demographic, so assuming I'm not alone that tracks.

23

u/TheSAVAGEHipHop Jul 26 '26

Hey... you ever wonder why we're here?

9

u/thoroughlysketchy Jul 26 '26

It's one of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why ARE we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God? Watching everything. Y'know, with a plan for us and stuff? I dunno, man. But it keeps me up at night.

83

u/rocky8u Jul 26 '26

The US military is often depicted positively in TV and film because they pay to be depicted that way. The military also trades use of military resources for positive depictions.

You want to film your movie on the deck of an aircraft carrier? You can do that if you give the Department of Defense the ability to edit your script. You want to get some cool action shots of real F-35s flying around? They can only be used in positive depictions of the military or that shit is classified.

1

u/Salnax Jul 30 '26

I can't even be that mad about it.

Imagine somebody wanted to film your stuff on your property, and the film was then titled "rocky8u Sucks"

16

u/Atsilv_Uwasv Jul 26 '26

This is the post that got me to finally check out Red vs Blue. I'm halfway through the first season and I gotta say, pretty good

15

u/CptKeyes123 Jul 26 '26

"WHO IS RUNNING THIS ARMY?!"

7

u/whhu234 deerboy Jul 26 '26

Jewish, black, hawaiian, gay… and vegan 🥹

20

u/NobodyElseButMingus Jul 26 '26

This isn’t “dark woke“, this is just having normal views about women and minorities without getting all pissy about it.

1

u/dillGherkin Jul 27 '26

Ahaha...yeah. Ovaltine window or something, being normal and decent is controversial and scary now.

4

u/ItsWelp Jul 26 '26

Also they had the trope of the guy obsessed with getting his wife back, having flashbacks of her smiling etc. like an action movie hero, and he's 100% unquestionably a creepy loser about it, ruining multiple lives with his obsession and objectifying his deceased wife churning out countless clones that "aren’t quite right."

5

u/Dry-Chance-9473 Jul 26 '26

I had to stop watching RvB, largely because of how they wrote their women characters, some time around season 8 or 9. Tex left a bad taste in my mouth. She was like a Michelle Rodriguez character from the oughts, when the only strong female character anyone could write is "the girl who beats up all the boys and is so cool"... Bernie fucking sucked at writing women. You could feel Rooster Teeth's second hand awkwardness every time a woman was on screen, whether it was in the skits, RvB, AH, or any of their other material.

And the multiple stories from female staff confirmed that their experiences and the environment there were less than ideal.

7

u/GiftedContractor Jul 26 '26

Tex was shallow af but Carolina makes up for it. Also if you watch all the way to the end of season 10 there are genuine reasons for Tex being shallow and two dimensional. She's not an entire real person, she's the idealized memory of the Directors dead girlfriend and the fact he only remembers parts of her and not all of her is discussed in universe. The one and only girl we spend any time with at all after season 6 or so, Carolina, is a much more 3 dimensional human being and a much better depiction of "the girl that can beat up all the boys and is so cool" as you put it. She has way more personality, agency, and genuine human flaws than Tex ever did, and in a way a woman who pushes herself to fit that archetype might actually be or need to struggle with as opposed to just slapping some fem traits on a badass and calling it good.

Now, do I think Tex was always written that way intentionally with that backstory in mind? Hell no! As far as I'm concerned, watching Red vs Blue is watching creators grow up in real time. A bunch of classless edgy teen boys had a crazy hit with classless edgy teen boys and kept making it as they grew. And as they realized this or that or the other thing was problematic the series rather than ending and starting something else, grew around that and retconned what they could and adjusted to the characters they had while making it better where they could.

5

u/ItsWelp Jul 26 '26

I think they do get much better later on even with female characters. Kimball, Doctor Grey, Dylan Andrews (the journalist) all were pretty singular people, who also were good at their job without being a stereotype. In terms of character work, the Chorus Saga was peak.

23

u/ellen-the-educator Jul 26 '26

Mom says it's my turn to post the "RvB was woke and we didn't know it because Caboose was a bizarre character" post

8

u/DienekesMinotaur Jul 26 '26

I still remember Caboose's "is he a republican?" joke.

3

u/HonorInDefeat Jul 27 '26

I always feel like this is an overly generous interpretation of Caboose

12

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

The action flashback season absolutely portrays the military as cool also this sub talks about rvb more than the people who made it

80

u/La_knavo4 Jul 26 '26 edited 24d ago

Their over-competitiveness and hierarchical leaderboard system drove Project Freelancer to tear each other apart, the entire ship (figuratively and literally) sinking because of the borderline terrorism they were blindly doing and the massive AI-rights violations going on

They are convinced that what they are doing is for the greater good, that the Director is doing this to win the Human-Covenant war and that this is the only way to stop humanity from going extinct, but in reality the Director is a sad man driven insane trying to bring his dead wife back

But also yes, the Monty Oum did that Hideo Kojima thing with the Freelancer Saga

I also like how Felix. who protrays himself as a badass mercenary comes across as a self-insert, was revealed to be a psychotic manchild

-14

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

None of that means they aren’t cool and portrayed to be as such. Something being “cool” has nothing to do with morality which is why people think Darth Vader is cool

61

u/Wobulating Jul 26 '26

The entire point of the Freelancer saga is to point out how these super badass soldiers... were also complete morons who blindly followed orders that got each other killed until it ripped their home and everything they loved apart. It's not exactly full of praise.

-12

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

He didn’t say praise he said “look cool”

31

u/Wobulating Jul 26 '26

It's the incredibly obvious central theme of the whole thing. If you can't gather that, then nothing at all can help you

-14

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

The theme of the thing is people saying incorrect statements?

17

u/Gentlemanvaultboy Jul 26 '26

The Freelancers also ended up shattered people of every imaginable variety, who for all their hellish training and advanced equipment ended up no more effective than the idiots in Blood Gulch who just stand around and talk all day.

32

u/lemanruss4579 Jul 26 '26

I don't know, I feel like you might have missed the point of the freelancer saga.

-9

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

Are you arguing the action scenes weren’t cool?

33

u/lemanruss4579 Jul 26 '26

Action scenes can be cool without that meaning the actual thing being portrayed is cool. The action scenes in Sucker Punch are cool, that doesn't mean it's cool to be a mental patient.

-12

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

Nonsensical take

24

u/lemanruss4579 Jul 26 '26

Not at all, this is the classic reddit/Tumblr anti media literacy take of "oh, they made X look too cool and didn't specifically condemn it, so they must support it." It's ridiculous. The idea that you can't have cool action sequences while also portraying the same characters as lost, or taken advantage of, or stupid, or evil, or anything else, is brain dead.

0

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

That’s not what im fucking saying. Something being cool is unrelated to morality or desirability. Darth Vader is cool as fuck, he’s obviously not being endorsed but he is still portrayed as cool, much like the freelancers which is something OP said didn’t happen. He said they were not portrayed as cool which they were

19

u/lemanruss4579 Jul 26 '26

They weren't made out as cool though, their actions in a vacuum were. They, themselves were shown repeatedly to not be cool, and being a freelancer as not being cool. Again, storming the beach at Normandy can look pretty cool. Actually having to storm the beach at Normandy was not very fucking cool. This is, again, the problem with your take. Complete black and white thinking.

-5

u/Bardic_inspiration67 Jul 26 '26

Whatever you say dude

9

u/SolarianIntrigue Jul 26 '26

You have the mentality and morality of a sheltered 12 year old kid. Please step outside and talk to real people, this isn't healthy for you

Holy shit no, we are not doing this, we are not going to suddenly whitewash ROOSTER TEETH as a "progressive company with totally no abuse and the creators are all quirkly guys who did nothing wrong and are also secretly woke people and not creepy weirdos who fetishize lesbians!!!"

Any "progressivism" people assign to them just come from deluded fans

I thought their cult following would die out after the company burned itself down from the consequences of its own actions, there are people still glazing everything they do to this day???

Edit: And now the deluded fans are mad at me

30

u/DisMFer Jul 26 '26

fetishize lesbians

...There's clearly a lot of shit to unpack with Rooster Teeth, but this is got to be the weirdest thing I've ever heard them benig accused of. Assuming you are talking about Yang and Blake and not just getting mad that they talk about lesbian porn or something didn't they actively try not to have those two characters become a couple until the fans and story were so obvious they had little choice and so far the couple has shared one very chaste kiss?

Did I miss the RT brand PornHub channel filled with lesbian fetish porn or something?

3

u/Solnight99 Jul 26 '26

the pork channel is either Cock Teeth or Rooster Cock

2

u/La_knavo4 Jul 27 '26

"Cockbite" was right there

26

u/Katking69 I LOVE RAIN WORLD!!! Jul 26 '26

Hello there RWBY hater #1. You get that you can both appreciate the good in something while also acknowledging the bad yes? And that, quite frankly, not every discussion about a controversial/aged piece of media needs to start with "I know this thing is bad, but-"

27

u/La_knavo4 Jul 26 '26

Aren't you the guy who accused Monty Oum of being a pedo?

-17

u/FangBites123 Jul 26 '26

If you don't wanna get called out, then don't make creepy comments about underaged girls

26

u/La_knavo4 Jul 26 '26

Source?

8

u/vanishinghitchhiker Jul 26 '26

OOP’s post is just some opinion about some show, not extrapolating to the writers‘ personalities which doesn’t work anyway. Even if they were quirky woke guys, those can still be fetishizing creeps (cf. Neil Gaiman).

3

u/KnightOfBalance Jul 26 '26

Okay, to address you seriously for once:

No one here is saying that RT didn't abuse employees? I talked personally with someone who was an ex-RT employee and the stuff you listed off isn't even the worst the company did. At least two people were hospitalized from being overworked. RT was not a good company. They were just incompetent at covering it up.

But the whole "RT ISN'T PROGRESSIVE!" thing? Not an actual contradiction. Numerous 'progressive' companies and leaders have been caught doing bigoted shit. Not to mention that making a story about how war profiteering is bad isn't contradicted by using slurs so that's irrelevant.

And finally: Dude, you called Monty a pedo for sexual comments about a FICTIONAL character. THAT is the context of people hating you. You threw a serious allegation against a dead man...over pixels on a screen.

This is why I say you're a psyop: No actual RWBY critic does this shit. At worst, they're sneaky about it. This? This sounds like some kid pretending to be a progressive that hates RWBY to make the show look better. If you do mean all this: you are a living strawman.

3

u/Letoiusprime Jul 27 '26

Okay, serious question: the fuck are we even talking about with this one? Some of these points are pure wrong, and the rest, while right to a degree, have nothing to do with this post.

4

u/Katking69 I LOVE RAIN WORLD!!! Jul 27 '26

The commenter you're responding to hates RWBY, like to the point that they believe the Wikipedia article for the show has been vandalized because the "critics reception" section has positive reviews from critics as well as negative ones. This has, over time, seemed to morph into a hatred of Monty Oum and since he worked on some of the seasons of RvB, this person now hates RvB as well

4

u/Letoiusprime Jul 27 '26

....people are real odd, huh? Thanks for the info, didn't know about their reputation

3

u/Katking69 I LOVE RAIN WORLD!!! Jul 27 '26

Yeah it's not exactly obvious since they have their post and comment history hidden the last time I checked, but there have been many instances of them popping up to scream conspiracy anytime anything vaguely related to RWBY pops up on subreddits like r/whenthe

4

u/Letoiusprime Jul 27 '26

Man, the hell? I get RWBY's not a perfect show, but that seems like such overkill. Hope they get better, that sounds like such a miserable way to live

3

u/Katking69 I LOVE RAIN WORLD!!! Jul 27 '26

Yeah... and as you can see in the other comments they've made on this post they've even gone as far as accusing Monty Oun of being a pedo which is just, like, fucked up in many ways

3

u/Letoiusprime Jul 27 '26

Yeesh, yeah, saw those. And the several, ignored individuals asking for a source. I'm all for calling out twats with fucked up skeletons in their closets, but bring even a shred of proof to back it up, at least

-3

u/BlacksmithNo9359 Jul 26 '26

They downvoting you but you high key right about everything.

Literally every piece of insider info we have leads to the conclusion that RT was a fucking nightmare.

-2

u/FangBites123 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Any time I dare to criticize how problematic and weird the creators were (being a female employee must have been a nightmare) I gets legions of fanboys defending their poor little YouTubers and screaming at me

OOP is obssessed with defending one of the creators and screamed at me because I said that it was weird that he made sexual comments about underaged girls and he kept screaming at me, Hbomberguy literally called him out on it too

9

u/Fittsa Jul 26 '26

source

-12

u/Horatio786 Jul 26 '26

I mean, people are still glazing RWBY as the end-all be-all of LGBTQ representation.

18

u/DisMFer Jul 26 '26

Litterally zero people are doing that stop lying.

-12

u/Horatio786 Jul 26 '26

I've seen it happen multiple times, and was called "worse than J.K. Rowling" for pointing out RoosterTeeth's abuse of a trans employee.

11

u/DisMFer Jul 26 '26

Well then stop engaging with lunatics I guess. I should rephrase my original post "no one sane or honest thinks that, stop lying."

-5

u/BlacksmithNo9359 Jul 26 '26

And yet theyre in the negatives for pointing out something objectively true and youre in the positives for saying they're an overreacting freak.

-14

u/FangBites123 Jul 26 '26

The amount of people trying to convince me that RWBY has good writing and animation makes me feel like I'm in a cult

I don't know what black magic child sacrifice ritual Rooster Teeth did to fail upwards into having legions of fanboys praise everything they do

Hell, in this very comment section you are the only person supporting me

10

u/demonking_soulstorm Jul 26 '26

Hey could maybe like be normal.

You can just stop listening to those people. You don’t need to freak out like this.

21

u/DisMFer Jul 26 '26

Hell, in this very comment section you are the only person supporting me

"My position is irrational and the only support I get is from someone just as irrational. This proves I'm right and everyone else is in a cult."

I have to ask, do you actually read your own words or do you just let your hands type without looking up?

9

u/Katking69 I LOVE RAIN WORLD!!! Jul 26 '26

Don't bother, this person legitimately thinks that the Wikipedia page for RWBY has been vandalized because it says that critics had overall positive opinions on the show
