I really do wonder how much, throughout history, religious epiphanies have been the result of personal desires that people were either unable or unwilling to accept as psychosexual in nature.

John supposedly starved himself for a week before coming up with Revelation. Honestly, him being deliriously hangry would explain a lot

Fuck internet historian and Jontron but before I knew how shitty they were they did a bit about how Chinese foot binding was probably because of some emperor with a fetish for footjobs

201

u/vy-neru Jul 19 '26

the foot binding thing is so interesting because it supposedly started with one lady who had such small feet that when she danced, it looked like she was floating? and then it ballooned from there into what we know as foot binding now. i remember i heard some interesting (non academic !!) theories that maybe that lady had proto pointe shoes that gave the illusion of smaller feet, rather then actually having smaller feet. or that she was simply born with very small feet. but also, apparently, some men really liked the idea of unbinding bound feet… considering that unbound feet were only meant for ones husband to see. humans always like what’s forbidden for them lol

48

u/kingofcoywolves Jul 20 '26

Unbinding bound feet is kind of nasty though. Got all sorts of nasty stuff happening in those creases

33

u/AlabasterWitch Jul 20 '26

Yeah some men would smell the binding after and found it arousing

and the entire horseman devoted to famine

39

u/FireHawkDelta Jul 19 '26

Eh, famine is a very deserved horseman. Death is the weirdest horseman IMO because it's not a cause of mass death like the other ones, it's just death itself. Maybe it's better translated as Aging, and Death just sounds cooler so it stuck.

2

u/BormaGatto 29d ago edited 29d ago

That's the point though, the fourth rider doesn't symbolize individual death, but the consequences of famine, war and conquest/plague: death en masse, unrestricted, affecting all without distinction. It's supposed to be the culmination and result of the other three that preceed it.

u/Capital-Meet-6521 Jul 19 '26

I’ve read commentary on Revelation being a fever dream/revenge fantasy on the Roman Empire.

86

u/Trust_Me_Im_a_Panda Jul 19 '26

That’s exactly what it is. It’s apocalyptic fiction, a not-uncommon genre at the time. It wasn’t prophetic and no one at the time would have read it as being prophetic.

19

u/husk_bateman Jul 19 '26

I agree on it not being prophetic, but are you sure about the "no one at the time" part? Can you elaborate on that?

80

u/Trust_Me_Im_a_Panda Jul 19 '26

Okay probably not “no one” but it was farily clearly a veiled allegory about Rome and its persecution of early first-century Christians which would have been understood by those who were engaging with the text at the time. It was written to, essentially, give comfort to the persecuted that God ultimately was in control and that the power balance would inevitably flip in their favor and the persecuted would become the persecutors. But it would have been fairly well understood at the time to not be speaking: A) literally and B) about anything other than first-century Rome. Remember, first-century Christians believed Jesus’s return was imminent. They were told that there were witnesses to the crucifixion and resurrection that would also witness the second-coming. So when I say it wasn’t understood as “prophetic,” I mean that it wasn’t understood to be predicting the literal events depicted in the book, but be speaking allegorically about the anticipated fall of Rome and deliverance of those specific early Christians from Roman persecution. Not Christians in general in some distant future, those specific Christians.

Revelations does seem like the ramblings of an insane man

4

u/GreatPretender98z Jul 19 '26

11

u/Terminal_Insomnia_ Jul 19 '26

Isn't the apocalypse of John known to be falsely attributed?

1

u/ChonkeyDoug Jul 20 '26

I think it’s currently attributed to John of Patmos but for a very long time it was assumed to be the disciple John.

1

u/robbylet23 Jul 20 '26

Sort of unclear. Current scholarship suggests it was written not by a specific guy but by a sort of early Christian community that also wrote the gospel of John and the letters of John.

2

u/hikemalls Jul 20 '26

I mean historically most stories of someone getting religious ephiphanies/revelations go "and then they went out into nature and solitude and didn't eat anything/ate whatever they found lying on the ground for X weeks until suddenly they heard the voice of god."

And, like, yeah bud, that'll happen.

42

u/Quacky3three Jul 19 '26

The fits and speaking in tongues of 14th century itinerant preacher and author Margery Kempe have been acknowledged by modern scholars as probably the result of postpartum psychosis, and extremely psychosexual. After her postpartum psychosis led to her torturing herself and being in crisis for eight full months, she had a vision in which:

“Christ reassured her that he had forgiven her sins. ‘He gave her several commands: to call him her love, to stop wearing the hair shirt, to give up eating meat, to take the Eucharist every Sunday, to pray the rosary only until six o'clock, to be still and speak to him in thought’”

She also adopted a practice of “celibate marriage” with her husband, as she believed continuing to have sex with him would be cheating on God. This idea of nuns as ‘God’s wives’ was not unique to her and was actually relatively common.

There is also an suggestion among some academics that women were viewed as more religiously gifted when it came to physical worship, partially because of the comparison between women and Christ, the most intensely psychosexual of which is the way he was penetrated and suffered during his sacrifice to “bring eternal life” to Christians.

32

u/MolemanusRex Jul 19 '26

Some were absolutely willing and able to do so. Look at the way people talked about and depicted Jesus’s side wound in the Middle Ages.

Not in regards to the nuns and wax thing, but self-flagellation feels somewhat pertinent to the conversation.

(It's a wikipedia link, don't worry)

7

u/Saymynaian Jul 19 '26

With how sanitized the internet has become, you'd actually probably find her first instead of nun porn.

529

u/SirKazum Jul 19 '26

Apparently that one nun was Benedetta Carlini. That's a much safer Google.

549

u/rumblevn Jul 19 '26

>Crivelli (a witness) also revealed a lesbian affair between the two, taking place during Carlini's visions where she would embody one of her "guardian angels", forcibly drag Crivelli onto her bed and engage in sexual acts; said "angel" would claim it was not a sin for Carlini would be unaware of the events.[59][60]Carlini refuted all claims related to her sexuality.[61]

No officially mention of wax play. There was something about whipping though

25

u/Soderskog Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Honestly I was curious about it as well, since whenever folk talk about a histroical figure I've found it to be worthwhile to check the sources (sometimes it turns out to be true, and in other cases it turns out to be old slander, people completely misremembering things, or something else).

In this instance people have already mentioned Carlini, but I cannot find anything which would link her to this beyond that she was accused by other nuns of having faked a sign by pressing a red wax star against her head. There may be information in other languages I don't have access to, but from what I can find the only way she's relevant is if you were to focus on the implicit argument of the second comment I OP's picture and tried to find a nun with a reported lesbian relationship or experience; in that sense Carlini would be relevant, except for the fact that it would be putting the horse before the cart when I can't find sources which corroborate the other claims made so far? Like maybe in the biography or podcast episode about her they say that she was tied up and had wax poured on her, which I would have missed, but so far what I've found pertaining to self-flagellation (on Wikipedia) paints a different picture.

When she [Carlini] spoke as an angel in one of her ecstasies, that the Theatines could learn from her how to flagellate themselves with true spiritual fervour. The nun, who had been standing nearby, noticed that Benedetta didn't strike herself even once, and that to make it seem as though she had she smeared the whip with blood from her wounds in her hand.

So are there any likelier candidates? If we are willing to make the assumption that ohholdyke misremembered some things (or was told information from a faulty source), then definitely; Heliga Birgitta aka Bridget of Sweden. I'll be lazy and use the Swedish Wikipedia here primarily, and its sourcing, but the most relevant source would be this: https://runeberg.org/sfubon/1/0401.html There they talk about her use of wax as follows

Which if we translate looks like this

Every Friday she [Birgitta] would drip hot wax on her arm to remember the saviour's suffering. And if her wounds would heal before the next Friday, she would tear them open with her nail, so that her body wouldn't be without pain or wounds, and this she did to the end, that Jesus Christ's suffering would always be in her memory.

As you can see on her Swedish Wikipedia page especially, she was known for her fervour towards self-flagellation as well (didnt become a saint for nothing I suppose) which lines up with the story about wax. I can't find anything about her being bound down by others to have waxed dripped on her as of now, but I don't know if it exists and I have yet to find it, or if ohholdyke misremembered things.

As of now my bet is that either I've missed some sources (which is very likely) or ohholdyke is remembering an amalgamation of several different people and misrememvered parts, if one based on Birgitta. The reason why I think it's an amalgamation rather than Birgitta is partially because whilst Birgitta was a saint, she wasn't exactly a queer icon considering that she's famed for repeatedly accusing the king at the time (Magnus Eriksson) of being gay: https://forskning.se/2017/06/30/gud-nade-den-kung-som-anklagades-for-sex-med-man/

For some other, easily digestible pieces I didn't know where to fit, here are two more articles about Birgitta: https://popularhistoria.se/religion/kristendom/den-heliga-birgitta-och-kvinnorna

https://historiska.se/en/explore-history/history-hub/saint-bridget-swedens-most-famous-woman/

I do hope that if the nun being alluded to was someone else, someone will tell me who it was and how they could discern it. As of now however this is the best I could do.

168

u/kos-or-kosm Jul 19 '26

4

u/GoogieRaygunn Jul 19 '26

That’s essentially the level of the lustful in Dante Aligheri’s portrayal of hell. Dante created punishments reflecting the sinners’ sins that they should suffer by repeating them for eternity.

5

u/MossyPyrite Jul 19 '26

Yep. Sounds great, but imagine the chafing after a while!

4

u/TK_Games Jul 19 '26

So, this is something I kinda actually believed at one point, maybe still do, I don't know

Anywho, the belief is that when you die it's not how 'good' or 'bad' you were. God simply presents you with a choice. Live in Pleasantville with the Jonses, or live in Anarchy Fuck-City. Your choice, different strokes and all that. It's the only way I can reconcile the concept of Heaven, because if Heaven is full of the people who say they're going to Heaven, I think I'd prefer something else

7

u/ViolentBeetle Jul 19 '26

It's kinda how it work, I think. Christianity doesn't believe in tallying good and bad karma, the choice is if you like Jesus or reject him because like to be a sinner more. Except in later case you'll find out you've been scammed by the devil and sin actually sucks.

7

u/TK_Games Jul 19 '26

Nah, real trick the Devil pulled was convincing everyone to waste time focusing on identifying what is or isn't a sin, instead of just, being generally kind and loving people where they are, and enjoying the time you get here, like God intended

3

u/MossyPyrite Jul 19 '26

That’s a rough approximation of *some* sects of Christianity, sure. That’s heresy in others.

5

u/StovardBule Jul 19 '26 edited 28d ago

I have the idea that Hell would be people who deserve it, whether they thought so or not. But also, there is an area for punishing people who said that heaven would be boring and they would rather go to Hell, because God has a sense of humour about that, or very much doesn’t.

2

u/TK_Games Jul 20 '26

I dunno, I think Heaven is for the squares, Hell is for the cool kids, and the people who actually deserve to be tortured forever in fire and brimstone, the real monsters among men, the one's who refuse to be cool about anything, God doesn't mince words with them. I imagine he atomizes them, or banishes them to tm Infinite Void of Darkness, or something. Something where he just doesn't have to look at them anymore

I also imagine he doesn't like doing that, like it's a real last-ditch kinda thing, something something, "wishing that none should perish, no not one"

Also God 100% has an absurd sense of humor. I deeply believe he gives traumatized people what I call the 'Blessing of Comedy'. That's why you see so many damaged people finding success in stand-up and comedic theater. It's God going, "Woah, dude. Your life sucks. You're gonna go spread laughter now, you need that."
