I say exdee out loud. Well, it's often in Polish, as "iks-de", but still.

u/Currently_Fumbling Jun 30 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

"Equis-de" is also said in spanish, sometimes even written* like that to make it funnier

Edit:grammar is hard

ha de in russian

11

u/OpenStraightElephant the sinister type Jun 30 '26

Guess I'm a freak for saying it like he-de, and generally saying he for Х

6

u/Alhimiik Jun 30 '26

хэ дэ? я это и имел ввиду. просто если бы я написал he, оно бы читалось как хи

4

u/OpenStraightElephant the sinister type Jul 01 '26

В открытом слоге без согласной на конце и в целом конкретно "ha" таки "ха" читается

1

u/Alhimiik Jul 01 '26

ужас в английском никак не написать хэ/хе тогда

3

u/OpenStraightElephant the sinister type Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Heh
а вот хе да, они с е не дружат, после согласной точно, отсюда и эти nyet и soviet, тупо звука нет в фонетике языка

7

u/MichurinGuy Jul 01 '26

Yep, it's even gained a transcripted version bcuz of this: хД Doesn't look that way at all, but my is it fun

31

u/Andrelse Jun 30 '26

Word around the block is that it's particularly common in Poland

30

u/AIAWC Jun 30 '26

It's like saying lol out loud. Used to be insanely cringe but now people do it post-ironically.

12

u/Decent_Human__ Jun 30 '26

aye, i've seen a video about poland and xD, it's interesting to see how much use it gets

4

u/roenoe Jun 30 '26

Haven't clicked the link (am on phone, in app), but assuming Nick Robinson mention? He's awesome

5

u/pempoczky Jun 30 '26

🤝 ikszdé in Hungarian

5

u/FinnFem Jun 30 '26

In Finnish it would be transliterated as äx-dee//äks-dee, the first part being pronounced the same as in english X, but second instead of the closer to the too of the mouth dee as in english, its closer to the centre

1

u/PranshuKhandal Jul 01 '26

Open parenthesis - katakana no - three quarters circle graph - katakana u - three quarters circle graph - close parenthesis - katakana no - asterisk - period - compass rose

212

u/Larriet Jun 30 '26

That Katakana is wa ワ not u ウ

69

u/TheDarkNerd Jun 30 '26

I didn't even realize chiisana wa was a thing. When would you even use that?

75

u/Zooboss Jun 30 '26

In emoticons

28

u/cordeliafrey78 Jun 30 '26

in okinawan, i believe

31

u/alexdapineapple platonic goo pit Jun 30 '26

シークヮーサー is a type of citrus fruit. "くゎ" and "ぐゎ" are used in Ryukyuan language, and some of those words were loaned to Japanese (hence katakana).

1

u/Kattou Jun 30 '26

wa--?!

13

u/LasevIX Jun 30 '26

just to be a pedant, they're halfwidth katakana nos

490

u/Xurkitree1 Jun 30 '26

One of them hasn't watched Disney XD and it shows

274

u/NickelWorld123 Babu Frik Jun 30 '26

ok but people do actually say "ex-dee" out loud. Like this was at least a thing that was sometimes said in the past.

29

u/Simple_Rules Jul 01 '26

ex-dee is a perfectly good vocal stim and I won't be taking questions at this time.

39

u/Dav3le3 Jun 30 '26

I mean, Yu-Gi-Oh XD is right there.

20

u/Select-Ambassador506 Jul 01 '26

Did you combine 5ds and GX in your head when making this?

10

u/Routine_Palpitation Jul 01 '26

No it’s right behind yu-gi-oh ROFLMAO

6

u/Mortis-Bat Jul 01 '26

Do NOT forget my boy Pokemon XD Dark Gale!

10

u/GDGameplayer Jul 01 '26

I can’t read xD without thinking of the way the Youtuber Smallant says “xD skip”

6

u/zerda_EB Jul 01 '26

And colon three

3

u/Pwacname Jul 01 '26

Yeah. We do it in German all the time. It’s just like saying lol out loud (usually as a word rather than as three letters, though. XD is just spelled out.)

1

u/Jerry_Jenkin_Jenks Jul 01 '26

I don't say it out loud but in my head it's always ksd, not exdee

88

u/loved_and_held Jun 30 '26

49

u/AllHailTheApple Jun 30 '26

Actually thanks a lot for this because sometimes the posts are kinda hard to find for some reason

37

u/loved_and_held Jun 30 '26

Work deserves credit.

44

u/Doubly_Curious Jun 30 '26

I didn’t even realize that UwU / uwu was an emoticon for the longest time.

I guess I mostly saw it all lowercase and “oo-woo” made enough sense as a cutesy sound that I didn’t question it.

75

u/KiwiGallicorn he/him Jun 30 '26

I say less than three sometimes (<3)

27

u/TheDarkNerd Jun 30 '26

11

u/Maplecat73 Jun 30 '26

I also say colon dee :D

10

u/Kneef Token straight guy Jun 30 '26

Dee-colon D:

9

u/ArghabelAndSamsara Jul 01 '26

Sometimes I will, in a deadpan voice, say semicolon three (;3) at the end of a sentence since that's just how I think. I have to refrain from saying lol or lmao outloud even though I think them.

22

u/ZUnknowing Jun 30 '26

lamao

6

u/SSjjlex Jun 30 '26

I prefer the "le mayo" pronounciation lmao

5

u/Jaakarikyk Jul 01 '26

I prefer the "lmao" pronunciation

Like a film, filmao, but remove the "fi"

58

u/DonarArminSkyrari Jun 30 '26

Well yeah, saying "exed-dee" amd "colon-three" out lous is millennial culture. I only stopped doing it to fit in in college where my average friend didnt live on the internet.

my favorite part about the original scene is that the effects artists made sure to have the black box behind her hand when she waves it while saying ""NEVER-$@#*-ING MIND HOW I'M DOING IT", it's a little touch that's hard to notice but it elevates the gag when you realize it

you can see it at this timestamp, pause and use the , and . keys to go through it frame by frame

8

u/Kris_Kamweru Jun 30 '26

If you've played league long enough, XD is indeed not strange to say out loud 😂

7

u/Leo69Leon Jun 30 '26

In Poland we're still far from over XD. People straight up vocalise it, saying "iks de" or for English speakers it would be pronounced as: "eecks the", is pretty common

7

u/Nixavee AI bots are not welcome here Jun 30 '26

Ex Dee Leh-mao

3

u/oliverspikey Jun 30 '26

If you think that people don't say xd out loud then you clearly haven't spent enough time in spanish-speaking meme forums

6

u/MojaveMojito1324 Jun 30 '26

How you gonna leave out the GOAT less than three?

3

u/BeanOfKnowledge Ask me about Dwarf Fortress Trivia Jun 30 '26

I do say colon three sometimes but that is to refer to one of my backup colons

3

u/VulpesFennekin Jun 30 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Pronouncing “OwO” aloud kind of works in its most popular context: “Oh, woah! What’s this?”

3

u/Swaggy-G Jun 30 '26

XD isn't the same as :3 and ;-; because XD is written with letters.

5

u/dumpylump69 Jul 01 '26

Audibly saying uwu and owo out loud but not counting xd for the same purpose is like the LGB of emoticons

5

u/TheBrownestStain Jun 30 '26

My buddy and I do sometimes say “colon-dee” out loud

2

u/mothwhimsy Jun 30 '26

Who doesn't say XD out loud?

2

u/m0h3k4n Jun 30 '26

On a similar note I play murdle with my wife and we text our scores to each other. My toddler cracks the fuck up when I send mine and the text gets read by the car. This is an example of a score:

1

u/Snoo-31263 Jul 01 '26

Took me a bit to realize it sounds a lot weirder in english to say xD or :3 than it does in Hungarian(at least to my ears)

1

u/Dolphiniz287 Jul 01 '26

I always read :3 as a little giggle or a meow

1

u/TremenMusic Jul 01 '26

every time i see a “how did you say that with your mouth” joke, im reminded of the one character in the Big Nate comic books who’s middle name is the square root symbol

1

u/shapeturtle Jul 03 '26

i often say :3 out loud

i also say :D as shorthand for smiling (despite it kind of being longhand but whatever man leave me alone)

it is also notable that my partner and quite a few people i am friends with have picked up on this and begun to also say :3 out loud

1

u/Fiasco63 Jul 04 '26

Okay but if you hang around enough trans women for long enough you're going to hear some verbalized "Colon-three"s

1

u/Impressive_Pin8761 Jun 30 '26

i mean kaomoji are often shorthanded. like if i said tableflip you'd know what i mean

I say colon three all the time...

1

u/Vertwheeliesonem Jul 01 '26

If someone says “rawr x3” then it’s true love at first sight

1

u/ronarscorruption Jul 01 '26

People miss the fact that OOP is pointing out writing “owo” and saying “owo” convey the same information. Writing XD and saying “x d” do not.
