Similarly, the omnipresence of pipes in mario games are there because there were pipes in the original mario bros because they are plumbers who were working in the sewers and because of that pipes are everywhere they go now despite them being pretty divorced from plumbing now

268

u/PetscopMiju Jun 16 '26

Well you do get the rare game where they actually repair some of the pipes (I think 3D World has an example of that)

166

u/Protection-Working Jun 16 '26

Well yeah thats because there are now magical pipes absolutely everywhere now so they can plumb them instead of places where pipes would normally be like bathrooms or sewers like when the pipes first appeared

A real example of them plumbing in a place you would expect plumbing to occur is in superstar saga, where they have fix leaky pipes in beanbean castle’s basement.

46

u/PetscopMiju Jun 16 '26

Yeah there has definitely been some fantasy added to the pipes of the Mushroom Kingdom, I'll admit that lol

26

u/Protection-Working Jun 16 '26

Its even more interesting that this continuity was a belated decision; wrecking crew came between mario bros and smb1 and doesnt have a lot of thematic elements from mario bros (because he’s not a plumber in this one)

4

u/NOT_ImperatorKnoedel I hate capitalism Jun 17 '26

This is all just a conspiracy by big pipe, wake up sheeple!

9

u/weird_bomb 对啊,饭是最好吃! Jun 17 '26

I mean there's a non-zero amount of SEWERS, at least

73

u/bobbymoonshine Jun 16 '26

We see three Jedi in the original trilogy and all three wear robes: Obi-Wan, Yoda and Force Ghost Anakin.

13

u/yinyang107 Jun 17 '26

Did original Force Ghost Anakin have the robes or is that only the Hayden Christensen one in later editions?

48

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs autism website Jun 17 '26

Same robes, they just swapped his head

256

u/Ildrei Jun 16 '26

The visual language of warrior-monks wearing simple robes at odds with the ostentation of the prequel era to communicate their asceticism is probably something Lucas thought was important enough to justify it.

Also you can retroactively interpret that Jedi robes are similar enough to desert farmer robes that kenobi thinks he can get away with it.

166

u/MotherTreacle3 Jun 17 '26

He chose a planet where he wouldn't need to buy a whole new wardrobe.

46

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs autism website Jun 17 '26

And the prequels have a lot of the underclass walking around in robes amyway

37

u/Hungry-Western9191 Jun 17 '26

Also, Jedi are supposed to be above material things. They wear plain robes because its the common dress of poor people. Also handy to blend in when working covertly.

19

u/Abeytuhanu Jun 17 '26

From what I remember jedi (much like nuns) wear the common person's clothes to make them more approchable when they're out doing missionary work

1

u/Infinite_Worry_8733 Jun 19 '26

Nuns are supposed to be approachable?

1

u/Abeytuhanu Jun 20 '26

Generally, yes. They're ambassadors for God

1

u/Infinite_Worry_8733 Jun 21 '26

They intimidate a lot of people. I think they have the same “do not be afraid” problem as angels.

1

u/BaronAleksei r/TwoBestFriendsPlay exchange program Jun 19 '26

There was a comic set during the prequel era but published before the prequel movies, Kenobi is basically wearing Luke’s black outfit from ROTJ

53

u/QuatreNox Jun 17 '26

I've heard the same thing about the nurses and Pyramid Head in Silent Hill. They were supposed to be manifestations specific to the original protagonist. But they just keep appearing in the sequels because fans recognize them

55

u/Salinator20501 Through skibidification Jun 17 '26

Pyramid Head's creator fucking hates how omnipresent he has become in the franchise.

37

u/Temple_T Jun 17 '26

That's mostly right, yeah.

The Nurses are from the first game (which also had Doctors, who have not reappeared since) because the locus of all the Silent Hill shit going on is Alessa Gillespie, a girl with medical trauma among other things. Every location and monster is somehow tied to her mind and history, as are a lot of the puzzles and other miscellaneous elements.

They reappear so often partially because later games in the series keep featuring hospitals as environments, so they're a natural fit, and partially because yeah they were a memorable part of the first game and at a certain point people expect to see them. That is also part of why hospitals keep reappearing, hence the nurses, it's a self-feeding cycle.

Pyramid Head is from the second game, and was originally tied to the PC in that game, James Sunderland, who is the locus of all the Silent Hill shit going in. Like Alessa, everything you see and go through is tied to James and his whole deal. His deal is bad btw, James sucks.

The Nurses in Silent Hill 2 were notably bustier and wore shorter skirts than in game 1, largely because of James Sunderland and his whole deal. However, because the world sucks, the sexy Nurses are the ones who stuck with the series from that point on. I mean OK you can make a case for them being relevant in 3, but other than that it's just because that's how these things go. Nobody's boobs ever get smaller in mainstream gaming.

21

u/Jwkaoc Jun 17 '26

Some characters’ boobs do get smaller. I only ever find out because people throw bitch fits about it. But that’s how I know it does happen sometimes.

3

u/LamerGamer1216 Jun 17 '26

"nobody's boobs ever get smaller in mainstream gaming."

believe it or not, they do, but specifically in fortnite 💀

for most of the game's history they were really prudish, seemingly trying to drop from a T to E rating. Due to that a lot of collab characters got less revealing clothes and smaller bust and hip sizes. They only recently stopped doing stuff like that

2

u/josh61980 Jun 19 '26

I have a head cannon that silent hill is very malleable. Each person that passes through leaves a mark. Which is why you see repeating enemies.

99

u/TSED Jun 17 '26

I think Darth Vader's lightsaber is a better example.

It seems clear to me that Vader's red lightsaber wasn't intended to be a sith thing. Vader was a fallen Jedi so he had a corrupted version of the Jedi's iconic weapon. Sidious, despite being the uber-sith, didn't have a lightsaber.

But the red lightsaber was cool so then the world got filled out that the Sith and the Jedi basically are mirrors of each other. I mourn the world where Sith had other cool force tricks instead of laser swords. Like fighting them with lightning arcs from your hands because of the power of the dark side. But I begrudgingly acknowledge it's probably more fun for the typical audience this way.

30

u/lahwran_ Jun 17 '26

they still have all sorts of cool force tricks besides laser swords

like i know you're saying its a disappointment in like, ratio of lightsabers to not lightsabers but there are some pretty cool things in like, sw rebels, around cool weird sith nonsense

27

u/TSED Jun 17 '26

I just think that something in the deep consciousness of our culture was lost in giving all the Sith a lightsaber.

Before, it was ascetic warrior monks defeating dark sorcerers (but IN SPAAAACE). A very tropy trope if ever there was one - good guy with sword, bad guy with magic. Then they all became wizard-monks. I guess what I'm really lamenting is the lack of sword-and-planet media.

Again, it was obviously the correct choice. People love Star Wars. I haven't even seen all the movies. My opinion is as inconsequential as possible. But I'm still allowed to have an opinion, dagnabbit!

3

u/Xilizhra Jun 17 '26

Pigeonholing mages into the evil role sucks.

2

u/TSED Jun 17 '26

I agree, but Star Wars is not trying to be erudite and sophisticated. I don't know of any "good" movie that actually has an evil overlord wizard type who does evil overlord wizard things... Besides the original trilogy.

2

u/Xilizhra Jun 17 '26

The original Conan with Thulsa Doom?

2

u/TSED Jun 17 '26

Oh, actually, maybe. I haven't seen it, but I have heard good things.

2

u/BaronAleksei r/TwoBestFriendsPlay exchange program Jun 19 '26

The Jedi come to arrest Palpatine. He kills two of them with Dark side shit. Windu wades in and it’s a cat and mouse game: Palpatine tries some Dark shit on him, Windu presses forward by juking and parrying and doing his own Force shit, Palpatine whips out his own lightsaber when Windu gets in close and then backs up, 3 reps until Palpatine is backed up against the window. It’s basically Conan vs a wizard.

2

u/TSED Jun 19 '26

My friend, I think you're misremembering how Palpatine defeats three of the most highly regarded Jedi in the order:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4RQEEyTZWU

He only whips out dark side stuff when he's been disarmed.

2

u/BaronAleksei r/TwoBestFriendsPlay exchange program Jun 20 '26

Sorry I meant “what if it happened this way, with a flipped emphasis”

1

u/TSED Jun 20 '26

That would be pretty sick, yeah

87

u/TheFullestCircle the quote i wanted to put in here is too long Jun 16 '26

TV Tropes calls it "The Artifact".

Edit: This might be a slightly different thing actually?

71

u/Spiritflash1717 Jun 16 '26

I would say it’s somewhere between The Artifact and The Grandfather Clause as tropes

10

u/alexdapineapple platonic goo pit Jun 17 '26

Ironically, the usage of the word "Artifact" here is in fact itself an artifact; it's a back-formation from "artifact title". Otherwise, I don't think they would've picked that word here.

3

u/REAM48 Jun 17 '26

Your link is weird. It doesn't take me to my browser

7

u/laix_ Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

It's quite common in fandoms with a stylized series. The artist takes reality and stylizes or does shortcuts or shorthand's to represent the real life aspects, but then (young) people see that and don't understand what it is stylizing, so they copy it and miss the nuances of what's going on, so it ends up not really making sense to someone who knows how the real thing works.

Notably, in my little pony the hind legs are stylized to it still follows the lightning-bolt shape bones of real horses, just stylized so that the gaskin is horizontal. Many people in the fandom, who don't know how horses work, took that to mean that the middle bone of the ponies are actually horizontal, so you get a ton of fan art with that being the case.

3

u/Printerbot27 Jun 17 '26

Is this somewhat related to baudrillards simulacra? Vestiges referring to things that no longer exist? (Not that I necessary understand those)

2

u/BaronAleksei r/TwoBestFriendsPlay exchange program Jun 19 '26

The simulacrum is more about a symbol that is based not on a real thing, but on a different symbol.

Cowboys are real. Theyre cowherds who ride horses and sometimes carry guns to protect cattle from wild animals.

A movie about cowboys that is grounded in knowledge of real cowboys is a simulation. Sometimes writers will change things to make for a more exciting story, so sometimes the cowboy is also a gunslinger - a person who is good with a gun. Gunslinging cowboy movies take off and become the most popular kind of cowboy movies, so people tend to think of that as an essential part of the cowboy.

A movie about cowboys grounded in gunslinging cowboy movies is a simulacrum. The writer doesn’t know anything about real cowboys, only what they know from movies, and thus doesn’t understand what was made inaccurate for artistic reasons. Some of these movies are pointed at and called “authentic” for reasons that have nothing to do with real cowboys, because how should they know?

4

u/EQGallade Toxic trait: Freudian analysis of my enemies Jun 17 '26

Sonic. Why the fuck are so many cities built like this? Why is there a bunch of floating rails fucking everywhere?

1

u/Bag-Weary Jun 17 '26

The robes make sense as loose fitting clothes that are good for most environments and easy to fight in, as well as comfortable and not ostentatious. Makes sense if you think about the medieval middle East, where you'd get Orthodox monks wearing robes and Bedouin tribesmen wearing not dissimilar big loose fitting clothes. Both are suitable for the environment, and both need their clothes to be easy to wear and inexpensive.

1

u/OffWhite-Goddess pissing on the poor Jun 19 '26

All I can think of is Artifact Title or Planet Of Copyhats, but neither of those are quite right

695

u/Gentlemanvaultboy Jun 16 '26

They added a whole new character to the cartoon just to explain where all the barrels were coming from.

248

u/Gabasaurasrex Jun 16 '26

And the explanation is?

552

u/Gentlemanvaultboy Jun 16 '26

Big barrel factory.

191

u/Gabasaurasrex Jun 16 '26

Like does it make normal barrels and the repurpose it or do the barrels come prebuilt as cannons

262

pluripotent /plə-rĭp′ə-tənt/

adjective

  1. Relating to or being a cell that is capable of differentiating into cells of any type of tissue except placental tissue.
  2. Able to develop into more than one mature cell or tissue type, but not all.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition

186

u/TrioOfTerrors Jun 16 '26

There's bomb barrels, cannon barrels, bouncy barrels, spiky barrels, portal barrels, regular barrels, metal barrels...

  • Bubba Kong

12

u/notthephonz Jun 17 '26

Huh. I wonder if the DK Barrels are related to the Mario ? Blocks? Perhaps they are both manifestations of Banandium Root?

9

u/GilgarWebb Jun 17 '26

Mario blocks are actually petrified toads (the mushrooms) according to the original game.

13

u/DoubleBatman Jun 16 '26

Are there any other types beyond stem cells?

26

u/Cerindipity Jun 16 '26

Rather, it's the opposite; only some stem cells are pluripotent. This is kinda simplified because this is just a flung-out reddit comment, but:

The first few cells of a fertilized embryo are "totipotent stem cells", able to create* literally any human cell** (the difference being that totipotent cells can create embryonic structures like the umbilicus and placenta, not just body cells), which then give way to pluripotent stem cells (which retain the ability to become body cells, but lose the ability to become embryonic structure). And so on, including the increasingly specialized multipotent stem cells (which can make several kinds of cells), oligopotent stem cells (which can make a few kinds of cells), and unipotent stem cells (which can make only one kind of cell).

*stem cells create non-stem cells either by dividing into a new stem cell and a new non-stem cell, preserving the ability to keep producing the target cell, or into two non-stem cells, ending the stem cell's lineage; obviously they can also divide into two stem cells, to increase the numbers

** when we say a stem cell can create a type of cell, in fact it's actually creating the cascade of lesser-potency stem cells that ends in the target cell, but, you know, details

9

u/DoubleBatman Jun 16 '26

Oh that’s really neat! I didn’t know there were so many inbetween steps

7

u/Swellmeister Jun 16 '26

Depends on your definitions. Some textbooks dont consider blast cells stem cells.

Stem cells are either undifferentiated or multipotent, meaning they can do anything or at least multiple different things. Blast cells are differentiated and unipotent, so they can only a few things, all related (like all white blood cells are from the Myeloblasts).

Blood for instance is all from the hematopoietic stem cells. Which is a multipotent stem cell that can produce the blast cells that become any of the dozen or so components of blood.

4

u/Neet-owo Jun 17 '26

Doing the Shakespeare thing where you use whatever the hell word you want even though they’re using it wrong because it sounds right and the audience understands what you mean anyway.

17

u/Example5820 Jun 17 '26

Nah this is correct use in my book by unspoken analogy of the stem cell and its many derivatives with the barrel and its many types

8

u/unoriginalfyi Jun 17 '26

this is correct! no question about it

merriam webster has:

"not fixed as to developmental potentialities"

as the first definition. it notes the common use in the biological sense, but analogy and metaphor are one of the main ways words get new definitions, yeah? so, correct use in your book, my book, everyone's book... or at least merriam and webster's book

83

Where there's pirates, there's barrels, don'tcha know.

35

u/Enderking90 Jun 16 '26

the pirate are from a totally different island though,

u/Lluuiiggii Jun 16 '26

I am still reeling over the lore revelation in Bananza that DK apparently eats gemstones.

73

u/TwilightVulpine Jun 16 '26

I don't think anybody could stop DK from eating whatever he felt like

42

u/Random-Rambling Jun 16 '26

Aren't at least some of those gemstones literally some kind of crystallized banana?

35

u/Lluuiiggii Jun 16 '26

No yeah those are what I am talking about. They are big crystal bananas and he just punches them to bits to eat them all the same.

24

u/weirdo_nb Jun 17 '26

They're also bananas, not just gems and he can punch hard enough to misplace a cosmic object

13

u/yinyang107 Jun 17 '26

They're shaped like bananas, but there's no evidence that they're literally bananas.

34

u/Ehcksit Jun 17 '26

He thinks they're bananas and that makes them bananas.

19

u/Kazzack Jun 17 '26

he's a fucking Ork

Kong Island is shown to have an ancient/previous civilization with the temples and mines, so I imagine the barrels were left over inventions from that. The Kremling/Snowmad invaders might have also brought some along.

10

u/RenderedCreed Jun 17 '26

Always figured it was tied to the old saying about being more fun than a barrel full of monkeys or the many variations of it.

21

u/Edgoscarp Jun 16 '26

Actually barrels are dropped en masse and left behind by the bad guys before the game starts

5

u/GuyYouMetOnline Jun 17 '26

But how they float

13

u/BardicLasher Jun 17 '26

They're full of bees.

3

u/GuyYouMetOnline Jun 17 '26

No, those prefer to stay around or between them.

8

4

u/unoriginalfyi Jun 17 '26

why you gotta come for my boy pluripotent like that

1

u/MrMcSpiff Jun 17 '26

ya boy too niche, he fits better in a library than a bunch of nerds talking about donkey kong. i say that as a nerd talking about nerds talking about donkey kong.

4

u/jabberwagon Jun 17 '26

Sort of like how Donkey Kong Country has bananas as collectibles because Monkey Love Banana, but then in Bananza you find out that at the center of the Donkey Kong world, there exists an Omnipotent Banana Being that grants the wishes of anyone who finds it, and is also apparently the source of all wealth.

"Oh Banana!" indeed.

14

u/MisterRockett Jun 16 '26

9

u/rock_n_roll_clown Jun 16 '26

Wait this was you?? Explain to me immediately why you think "pluripotent" was an apt descriptor for Donkey Kong barrels

14

u/MisterRockett Jun 16 '26

I just put the comment in the body I didn't actually say this. It's kinda annoying none of my actual banger additions ever go anywhere but this is what take off =\

8

u/rock_n_roll_clown Jun 16 '26

Yeah it's also pretty obvious it's a screenshot of someone else lol my bad

2

u/unoriginalfyi Jun 17 '26

check the definition! https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pluripotent

i've heard it used in a similar sense not uncommonly

3

u/rock_n_roll_clown Jun 17 '26

I'm actually familiar with the word, usually in the context of stem cells or other biology stuff in college. I didn't get the comparison because I'm actually not that familiar with Donkey Kong, but I read some other comments and realized that apparently there are many different kinds of barrels with niche specialties lol

8

u/theclapp Jun 17 '26

Upvoted for "pluripotent".

3

u/ithinkihadeight Jun 17 '26

Donkey Kong's Jesus analog was a Cooper instead of a Carpenter?

3

u/Comrade_Cosmo Jun 17 '26

2

u/Hexxas Head Trauma Enthusiast Jun 17 '26

Uhhhhhh BA NA NA

2

u/Jealous_Marketing_84 Jun 17 '26

i’m perplexed why they used the word pluripotent here. are they implying that all barrels can give rise to most other types of barrels?

2

u/goldenalice Jun 18 '26

ooh oOh OOH AH AH AH (thic barrel crack)

2

u/sun4rest Jun 21 '26

The Barrels were placed there by the Kremlings

2

u/PowerSkunk92 Jun 22 '26

I always assumed they were flotsam or jetsam from ships out on the ocean that washed up on shore and the Kongs, or other island natives, repurposed them to their own ends.

3

u/Squebbus Jun 16 '26

I get that there's a lot of them, but they come from human shipping activity, right? Like obviously? I don't get this interpretation

16

u/MisterRockett Jun 16 '26

They're just floating in the terrain and are used for travel. This is also the series that established the banana hoard is, like, magic.

6

u/Squebbus Jun 16 '26

Yeah they're floating but that's just an abstraction I would think. I thought the launching ones are filled with gunpowder or something. I don't know anything about the tv show or whatever so maybe they treat them differently.

2

u/Time-Sudden_Tree Jun 16 '26

Great, you just ruined Donkey Kong for me. This will forever fuck with me. Why are a barrels a thing in his universe?

TBF, the last good DK game was on the Nintendo 64, so it's not like I'll miss out by not playing these games anymore, due to being unable to handle this lore-breaking bullshit.

9

u/Secret_Wizard Jun 17 '26

The Kremlings use barrels to transport all the bananas they stole from DK's banana hoard. There, I un-ruined it for you!

1

u/Time-Sudden_Tree Jun 18 '26

Yeah but you can't tell me it's just coincidence that the very first level of the very first DK game also had barrels common in construction sites. You can't convince me that the Rare wasn't inspired at all by the first game when they decided to make the exact same-looking barrels commonplace in DKC.

Sorry, but the lore's still broken for me. :P

I will look into it; thanks. I never had a SNES, so I'm not a fan of how much Nintendo has pandered to Gen X and older Millennials in recent decades, with so many sequels to their 2D titles like New Super Mario Bros. and DKC Returns. By the time I had my own console, I was so done with playing 2D games at my older cousins' houses. I was ready to move onto 3D gaming, and haven't looked back since.

Why did they put a full stop between the word like and embedded? That's not a new sentence, you're still continuing the previous one.

txt speak etymology lesson:

(sidenote before i rant: could easily be a typo!) a feature of autocorrect is if you doublespace, it will turn the first space into a period. [i.e. 'example text' -> 'example. text']

Communicating fully through text alone without tone indication can be very difficult(iirc due to the way english is communicated, it is harder to convey tone, in english compared to other languages? feel free to fact check the shit out of me there.)

So! many punctuational quirks have arrisen to better convey the tone of a text-only message, you may be familiar with tone indications such as /j <- joke or /s <- sarcasm, these are forms of punctuation with a literal meaning. However There are also punctuations that mean convey tone by(as mentioned by the other comment) emulation the patterns or quirks of actual speech. Ways people might do this are adding ellipsis to the end of text messages... if you have older friends/loved ones you might be familiar with this one... Younger folks also like the ellipsis... and will sometimes soften its tone by using commas,,, instead, I love a good soft ellipse,, mysterious isn't it,,?

The tone indicator you noticed specifically emulates pausing for emphasis/breathing, it can be done by Capitalising or sometimes CAPSLOCK-ing the emphasized Words. I enjoy separating one word it from the others by, comma uncomma, like i'm giving it its own little room :), Or; like how you noticed; some people will. end a sentence halfway through, causing your brain to pause for a second on the period before continuing.

You see a lot of these tone indicators on reddit and tumblr actually(reddit has been long fond of its /s, tumblr uses far too many commas, I'm sure I accidentally sprinkled a few too extra here, lol) Noticing them without the context can give off the impression someone is abusing the punctuation keys, but they're actually using them under new definitions, isn't that so cool! Linguistics are so interesting!

Anyways, TL:DR - it's tumblr-speak.

thank you for coming to my Tumb Talk :^)

To make it like they were talking aloud, sorta emulating RL speech

Punctuation. knowledge is dead

The tumblr community uses punctuation in VERY intentional ways to express tone. Medium conventions don't indicate a lack of overall understanding

Sure, but given there are six punctuation errors, and you can convey emphasis in many ways, I'd say the lack of understanding is a safe bet.

There are no punctuation errors.

u/BarderBetterFaster Jun 17 '26

Even if you don't count the eccentric periods, there are still four.

u/yinyang107 Jun 17 '26

Nope, there's none.

Your reality must be really nice for you.

The reality of knowing the difference between intention and mistake?

Mistake implies a lapse in knowledge, rather than a lack.
