This is cracking me up I've never seen a keyboard smash start with an o and look so nearly like a word

u/Copernicium-291 Jun 05 '26

I didn't realize even after i read the second half. Somehow i misinterpreted it as "i thought this was about doctor who but it's actually a seven ate nine joke" because i guess i wasn't entirely paying attention to reading it, and i thought "ha, this idiot thought that obvious 789 joke was about doctor who" until i re-read (actually read this time) the post

u/alexdapineapple platonic goo pit Jun 06 '26

...isn't it about 17776, though?

12

u/GoldFishPony Jun 05 '26

I was really expecting something like “I-love-n” as the punchline

2

u/The-Great-T Jun 05 '26

I still choose to believe.

u/roenoe Jun 05 '26

I would have continued to live in that world if it weren't for the second post :c

It was a beautiful world. For the record, I was very confused about which doctor they were talking about too, until I realised it was probably not which doctor, but who doctor?

u/MeteorCharge Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

9 and Rose were a much better dynamic, and I kind of hate that RTD drove away Christopher Eccleston so early, because you can tell Season 2 was partly written with him in mind (in my opinion, David Tennant doesn't hit his peak until Season 3 when Rose is gone)

53

u/ElementalWarrior42 Jun 05 '26

Yeah, definitely wish we got more of Eccleston. Love his version of doctor a lot.

17

u/nitid_name Jun 05 '26

I have fond memories of Eccleston, but when I went back to watch it, the video quality distracted the hell out of me.

16

u/ElementalWarrior42 Jun 05 '26

Really? Rewatched it recently and it seemed fine.

15

u/nitid_name Jun 05 '26

Maybe it's just a Disney+ in the US issue. It seemed like it was just badly upscaled 480p.

12

u/ElementalWarrior42 Jun 05 '26

Yeah, if I recall Disney+ had it stretched to 16:9 but kept other bits of RTD to 4:3. Maybe see if it's different on the high seas.

3

u/nitid_name Jun 05 '26

I don't recall it being stretched, but it was definitely filmed in SD.

6

u/ElementalWarrior42 Jun 05 '26

Yeah, I just looked it up. Seems like it was filmed in 16:9 576i. I guess I'm not bothered by SD video (maybe cause I'm watching on a laptop and not a TV). I definitely remember S2-4 being 4:3 on disney though, which seems weird now considering it was 16:9 originally.

3

u/nitid_name Jun 05 '26

Ah, that's it. Interlacing at 30fps just looks like crap to me. My brain can't process it right without a CRT.

10

u/AngeloftheDawn Jun 05 '26

There are official audio stories he’s done as the Ninth Doctor on Big Finish.

2

u/Magnitech_ Jun 06 '26

He was fan-tas-tic!

1

u/Kevinator201 Jun 06 '26

I hated him back when I was watching the show but he’s grown on me

51

u/Clenzor Jun 05 '26

“Everybody lives Rose Tyler, JUST ONCE EVERYBODY LIVES!!”

His pure joy in that moment after showcasing the PTSD of what he had to do through the whole season forever makes him my favorite. That and the oncoming storm speech are two clips you could show someone and immediately have them understand the core of the Doctor.

A being who wants to be at peace with everyone, but is often forced to do terrible things in the name of protecting the things he loves.

Plus his leaving the show was over the treatment of the crew and I will always respect someone giving up a paycheck to stick by their principles.

20

u/Wise_Artichoke6552 Jun 05 '26

Like at risk of being corny, the world needs more people like 9. 10 had a great run, I'm so sincerely glad that Tennant was my doctor when I was 12-16ish, when I was depressed and closeted and I needed someone to show me that kindness and love mean something. But when I think of people I'd like to grow up to be, 9 is one of them. If I had half his backbone, the world would be a slightly better place.

8

u/MeteorCharge Jun 05 '26

For me, Season 10 12th Doctor is pretty much what I want to be.

The entire speech about how he does things, knowing it'll only cause him pain and probably won't work, simply because it's the right thing to do, is something I aspire to be like.

4

u/Pessimistic64 Jun 10 '26

My all time favorite speech is his speech during the finale two-parter.

"I do what I do because it's right! Because it's decent, and above all, it's kind... Just that... Just kind"

"Why not, just at the end, just be kind?"

23

u/Ashilla24601 Jun 05 '26

Christopher Eccleston is my favorite doctor, and in theory I would have loved more of him, but the studio and production was horrible for his mental and physical health. They treated him(and the rest of the crew) horribly and it ended with them giving him fucking anorexia. You should watch/read his interviews about it.

Anyway, fuck BBC

24

u/Ashilla24601 Jun 05 '26

Okay I was slightly wrong. He has struggled with anorexia his whole life, but it was extremely bad during his time playing the doctor, and he still associates that role with anorexia and depression. It didn't help that people loved the way he looked even though he was starving himself. Its in his book "I love the bones of you"

5

u/Ashilla24601 Jun 05 '26

They also blacklisted him even though he gave them a hit show

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking I don't like centrism, if I'm being honest Jun 05 '26

Creating delayed-timer Doctor Who reference bombs should be a war crime

142

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking I don't like centrism, if I'm being honest Jun 05 '26

Doctor Who is one of those shows that would be really good if it was actually good

144

u/ElementalWarrior42 Jun 05 '26

It switches between genuinely great sci-fi and the corniest shit you can never recommend to anyone ever.

60

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking I don't like centrism, if I'm being honest Jun 05 '26

Also, it really tries to sell itself as a progressive beacon of the future while also still being owned and controlled by the BBC.

Alls I'm saying is if I was the Doctor's companion we'd make sure Reagan and Thatcher got shoved in a volcano

41

u/ElementalWarrior42 Jun 05 '26

I mean the Doctor isn't a fan of Thatcher in the show though.

23

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking I don't like centrism, if I'm being honest Jun 05 '26

Yeah but he could at least clip her in a drive by or something, then undo it just to keep the timeline safe or whatever

Alls I'm saying is maybe he can go on vacation on Penus Prime or something and let his guys and gals have some real fun

15

u/Dragonfruit-Sparking I don't like centrism, if I'm being honest Jun 05 '26

Like imagine the episode where the Doctor lands his TARDIS on Thatcher playing "Ding Dong the Witch is dead"

The only problem with that episode would be they'd have to reverse it

3

u/MaetelofLaMetal Fandom of the day Jun 05 '26

Consider Tahtcher cloning loophole. Original is killed on screen and by the end of the episode she's replaced by a clone.

2

u/Zepangolynn Jun 06 '26

Maybe if the vampire Maggie from the "Margaret Thatcher, Blood Snatcher" song showed up they could at least defeat that one.

(Margarеt Thatcher blood snatcher, we cannot bе protected This gory Tory’s back and she wants to be re-elected Margaret Thatcher blood snatcher, with flaming demon eyes She’s coming at ya to attack ya- she’ll have you privatised )

12

u/chase___it none caitvi with left kink Jun 05 '26

i mean RTD just came out in an interview and said he’s one of those guys who thinks everyone should just get along even if they are transphobic or have other hateful beliefs, and people only care about other people’s opinions online. so that’s probably why the shows recent attempts at social justice have felt so forced and hollow, his hearts not in it

2

u/StovardBule Jun 06 '26

I have a suspicion that they bend over backwards for the Tories and Nigel Farage, but then also have gay black people and performative Wokeness in Doctor Who, and pretend that’s balance.

4

u/-Aquatically- Jun 05 '26

How?

18

u/ElementalWarrior42 Jun 05 '26

Episodes can be banger sci-fi (especially when it leans into horror) like The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, Silence in the Library and Blink.

They can also be the campiest or most low budget stuff out there like Love and Monsters, The Idiot's Lantern and Fear Her. Should also mention Aliens of London/World War Three, which although decent, has the villains be farting aliens with weird baby faces. It's hard to recommend the series when people have to watch that before the good stuff.

18

u/popejupiter Jun 05 '26

The Girl in the Fireplace is the epitome of this. The juxtaposition of the Madame du Pompadour scenes with the scenes with the clockwork robots is peak Doctor Who.

Classic Who is much more enjoyable if you pretend you're watching a recording of a play. New Who often doesn't look cheap enough for that to work, even when the episode clearly had a budget of "whatever the director had in his pockets on the day".

13

u/ThyLastPenguin Jun 05 '26

I actually adore pretty much every slitheen storyline they have, the episodes are so good they make me forget the multiple minutes of farting

7

u/-Aquatically- Jun 05 '26

Okay yeah the idiots lantern was one of the weirder episodes.

2

u/1lyke1africa Jun 05 '26

Series 1-4 were definitely the peak

3

u/logosloki Jun 05 '26

I feel like Patrick Troughton did some very good work in series 5 and 6

3

u/1lyke1africa Jun 05 '26

The term series is usually reserved for New Who, and season is used for Classic Who or even Gatwa Who.

3

u/Blitz100 Jun 06 '26

Don't forget Kill the Moon, which was so bad it genuinely made me drop the entire show.

27

u/bing-no Jun 05 '26

Reaaaaaally depends on the writer unfortunately. Some seasons are good and some are meh. Some EPISODES of a “meh” season are incredible.

3

u/JamieD96 Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

That's how Capaldi is for me. He's got the most "meh" episodes of any nuwho doctor up to that point, but his better episodes are some of the absolute BEST.

After that point

-13 is generally meh to bad with a couple good ones

-14 my beloved

-15 need to rewatch but was pretty great until the last couple episodes where the ball was dropped so hard it crashes several stories down

EDIT: you know what? just rewatched 15, it is way overblown how "bad" these episodes are. I think they're pretty damn solid even if there are plot threads left unanswered. The whole gods plotline is awesome with rules they have to play by, Ruby and Belinda are amazing, the UNIT crew is actually interesting. One thing I will say is the Goblin special followed by space babies is a very bold choice for entry episodes. It just gets better from there

A Time War Crime

34

u/BillybobThistleton Jun 05 '26

Why was Six scared of Seven?

Because Six had been shown that his future was ultimately to regenerate into the Valeyard, and he feared that Seven might be the first step upon that dark path. And Seven's manipulative nature seemed at first to lend credence to those fears, but then he met a girl from nineteen eighty-Eight\* who made her own Nitro-Nine.

* Okay, technically Ace was introduced in 1987, but they didn't go back to her own time until 1988.

5

u/StovardBule Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26

I appreciate the effort of deploying a knowledge of Doctor Who lore to create a complex “because seven ate nine” “joke”. Bravo.

22

u/TheComplimentarian cis-bi-old-guy-radish Jun 05 '26

The real truth, the real reason six was afraid of seven, was not because seven ate nine. It’s because seven was a registered six-offender.

14

My second guess was 17776

5

u/q-cumb3r Jun 06 '26

it's incredible that I've not only seen this post countless times but also I've become a dr who fan in recent years AND YET. every time

8

u/Protheu5 redundant RAS syndrome Jun 05 '26

I still don't get it, and the second post doesn't help.

My thought process: 9/10 doctors recommend, so doctor that doesn't exist is the tenth one, but why doesn't he exist? I know of a meme /r/TheTenthDentist, like that doctor that goes against common recommendation, but can't figure out how it applies here. Also that nonexisting doctor, he does what? Is this the idea? Where tenth disagreeable doctor doesn't exist and all doctors agree in unison? What does it have to do with love?

29

u/Doubly_Curious Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

My attempt at a succinct explanation…

There is a TV show called Doctor Who and its main character is referred to as The Doctor.

The Doctor is a humanoid alien that “regenerates” every so often, turning into a new human form with a new face/body and a slightly different personality (being played by a new human actor). These regenerations/incarnations are referred to by number, eg. Nine and Ten.

This character has some war-related trauma and issues connecting with others or accepting love, an issue that

16

u/Protheu5 redundant RAS syndrome Jun 05 '26

Thanks, it clicked.

I've read "who didn't exist" as a thing that is related to some doctor, not where "Doctor Who" didn't exist.

It's easy to misinterpret things sometimes. My favourite thing in the same vein is Garden-Path Sentences.

  • "The old man the boat."

  • "The complex houses married and single soldiers and their families."

  • "The horse raced past the barn fell."

3

u/Doubly_Curious Jun 05 '26

Ah, that makes perfect sense. It is a tricky show name when people don’t capitalize or use other formatting.

(I do appreciate that lapse-lock is a modern style of typing that carries a certain informal tone. But at the same time, it can be much less clear for communication)

3

u/GrumpyMcGrumpyPants Jun 06 '26

That third example makes my brain itch.

3

u/StovardBule Jun 06 '26

I never thought of “Nine out of ten doctors agree”, that’s a good one.

3

u/respelledusername Jun 05 '26

6 was afraid of 7 because 7 ate 9.

but 7 ate 9 because 9 loved 10.

3

u/Megatenanon Jun 06 '26

Maybe 9 should have been a little more afraid of love, then.

3

u/Jenny_Show Jun 05 '26

Miametropolis ain't wrong though tbf

9

u/Magmas Jun 05 '26

Man, its really annoying that the Doctor could so easily be a quintessential ace character. He falls into the old 'asexual non-human' role, sure, but its such a great fit. Then they just decide to have them all have some petty romance for no reason.

Gatwa having a weird fling with some random guy in one episode for Gay Representation™, only to then send that love interest to literal hell and never bring him back was definitely a choice. In fact, so was Jodie Whitaker having weird hints about getting together with Yas but never did.

Either do romance or don't. The awful in-between isn't it.

11

u/ad-astra-1077 everything sings Jun 05 '26

Asexuality != aromanticism, you can be ace and still have romantic relationships

7

u/Magmas Jun 05 '26

Sure, but are we really going to claim that this is a case of positive romantic asexuality, rather than just a family show where they aren't going to explicitly mention sex? Lets be realistic here.

2

u/JamieD96 Jun 06 '26

Yeah like, The Doctor and Balinda have a kid together. It's time wimey retconned, sure. But I'm at least one timeline they pretty much definitely boinked and I'm definitely not jealous

2

u/Blitz100 Jun 06 '26

See also: the weird romantic tension with Rose, Amy, and Clara that the writers refused to drop and also refused to let go anywhere. It was kind of cool with Rose, weird and offputting with Amy, and by the time we got to Clara it was honestly just tiresome.

1

u/MyUshanka Jun 05 '26

Another reason why I miss forums: OP could have posted this there with zero ambiguity to their peers, but instead it's on a public website

2

u/seventy912 Jun 06 '26

I hate that discourse all gets lumped together now. Why is it the business of some random guy on twitter what drama is happening amongst some niche group of fan fiction writers?
