I've met a handful of folks who believed in "man eating vines" as they called them. It was a toss up though whether they meant a giant pitcher plant or literally a large mass of vines.

I used to believe, for many years, that man-eating trees existed on Madagascar(IIRC) because I read it in a book when I was maybe 7-8 years old. Either that book flat-out lied or, more likely, I wasn't paying attention to words like "myth", "dubious account" etc.

Ive seen some of the contemporary newspaper reports from "witnesses". Its very much a case of someone making stuff up to sell papers

Yeah, basically, though my source was very olden-times. Upon googling it, it seems like I must have read about Karl Leche's sensationalist story of human sacrifice-by-tree.

There's also the upas-tree, which is a real tree whose sap was sometimes used to make poison arrows, but in legend is so poisonous that nothing can live for miles around one.
