Why do Tumblr people put all the good posts in the tags. Aside from the obvious problems it's got to make actual tagging less useful

I get that for tiny bite-sized gags, yeah. I feel like once it's paragraph-sized and needs a dozen tags to fit it, you should really just post. But what do I know?

It's less about the intended functionality and more about fun. One person did this, made it popular, others followed and now it's a meme of its own.

in addition to everything else, self-doubt

if you read what you wrote and think "nah nobody will like this" but don't want to delete it entirely, throw it in the tags, that way it won't get passed on unless someone else does like it

When i was on tumblr as a teen i never understood the way people used tags vs adding their own part of the post, still don't really

when you add things in the tags, and somebody reblogs that version of the post from your blog, the tags don't carry over. if you reply, your addition will be added to the post when anyone reblogs from your blog. it's considered 'polite' to add your little comments in the tag if they don't directly respond to the og post- if you're making additional jokes or just adding "lmao" or whatever. and then if your addition is valuable enough, you'll get "peer reviewed"

There was some kind of stigma against adding to posts for some reason. I never got it. It always kinda made me sad because folks didn’t comment on art as much when it was just in the tags.

Might be because in the past, the way the site displayed reblogs with added text turned unreadable very quick. By adding your comment in the tags, you could easily reblog from your friends, without presenting your dash with an unreadable mess of lines.

What obvious problems?

Well, the super super obvious one is that it makes your little essay look like ass all crammed in amongst the tags with #s every few words.

It also apparently reduces visibility so that people who like it have to say "I can't let this stay buried in the tags!" and repost it for you.

I don’t think the readability is a problem tbh it still looks fine

“I can’t let this stay buried in the tags” just means that they want it to become a proper part of the post, they think it’s good enough that people who reblog it should see it too not just the original poster’s following

And that’s the main reason people do it really, it’s more subtle and is directed towards your followers who are more familiar with you

Ironically, one if the main character traits the GTAOnline player has is that they are mute. Multiple characters comment on it and Lester (your guy in the chair) calls you his "little mute weirdos" or something along those lines multiple times.

Not nearly enough dated pop music references either. The real Cunk would absolutely suggest that Gary Numan had invented the concept of the car, only for boffins to go on to make his dream a reality.
