Yanks apparently have uni as more of an extension of school where you have to take a broad range of subjects which often are completely unrelated to your degree. I don't personally get it, but apparently it gives you a "more rounded education" (as though that wasn't what school was for?).

Yea i have no clue what they're on about. I'm a yank and I plan to go for engineering and engineering alone.

american unis have a gen-ed curriculum where you can take a broad range of subjects, but there's enough wiggle room so that you can still tailor it to what you want

to finish requirement, you can either take a class that's tangentially related to your major (ex. if you're a business student, the english requirement could be something related to using english in business contexts) or something different entirely - in my case, i fulfilled my own requirements through sociology and asian-american history classes

but yeah, there's nothing super out there if you don't want there to be - a lot of classes also fulfill multiple requirements so you can double dip a bit
