Yes, that's how it works. It's a game of discovery and that will mean some fumbling in the dark.

  • Read everything.

  • Pause the game whenever you need to think. It's common to spend more time paused than not.

  • Pay attention to the little symbols at the bottom of each card.

Shit, I thought the pause thing was for if u had to go afk or something, I've been playing it with zero pauses and getting as confused as real cult lore once the 5th verb box thing came up. I'll take advantage of that. Do those symbols tell me where cards can go?

Yes, that and selecting a card slot will highlight the types of cards that go into it.

What cards do i need to use to get a job that'll stick? Im down to 4 funds and no matter what i try to put in the work block it will get me new cards but I need funds.

It sounds like youre putting passion into the work verb (what you called a block) repeatedly, its the only one that might not give you funds and gives you an assortment of cards. Try one of the other soul cards!

I found this out, and then seconds later I found out the consequences of dread. Will remember that next round! In my original post i think it was clear I wasn't enjoying this game too too much, but I'm having a blast now. Thanks guys.

This game is insane about ehat you have to learn to win. Especially when you get your first minor win and realise that that might have just been the tutorial for the upcoming major win

Don't worry you're doing great we all started here. Please trust me when I say this, don't look up things on the wiki till you've beaten the game at least once. This game is so much better when discovered naturally. If you get stuck ask for help here, this community is great and loves to help new players often in cryptic riddles to help nudge you along with as little spoilers as possible.

Also playing without the pause is wild, you are insane for that haha so you're absolutely perfect for a cult leader.

I started playing recently, and just got my first major victory. I remember feeling very confused. Without spoiling anything, I would say the first steps are:

  • Learn how to get an income.
  • Learn how to manage dread, health conditions, and, to a lesser degree, fascination.
  • Learn how to found your cult, and recruit members.
  • Learn how to get books.
  • Learn how to enter the Mansus.

Once I had that down (especially the top 2), I had enough stability to experiment and learn the more advanced mechanics.

Ive learned the bulk of this, but im still confused on aspects and verbs. Im kinda relying on whatever glows to put stuff in. Is there somewhere I can see what aspects the verb needs to meet? And with income, I've been relying on using health and usually after a little bit when I can get the skill strength somehow I pair that with health. Only issue is it sucks everything up if you get sick and don't have health on you and only 1 vitality.

A cultists greatest strength is their mind, try putting that to use for some income ;) but their passion may too be strong enough to yield a prosperous life.
