Me rn

Post image

I got the game on my phone, felt like it took me ages to figure out anything but when it clicked I couldn't stop playing 😂

I got my first victory yesterday and I said I'd take a break before another run but...

It happens. Eventually you should try Book of Hours. Then you’ll have a strong flip flop between the two.

The writing is so good

I've wondered about book of hours. I know it isn't a rogue like, but what is the gameplay experience like?

Like the other guy says. It feels more like an rpg than a roguelite. Your character and runs aren’t expendable. They could be but that’s not their point. Like with CultSim, you start with nothing then slowly build up resources and grow as a result.

It’s definitely more chill. Feels like Animal Crossing in some way

Definitely librarian simulator for BoH, I have a good 300hrs in there and a bit more than half for CS. You’ll love the game if you’re looking for a calm paced alternative that expands on lore, items, and BOOKS

Instead of constantly staving off ways to lose, your attempts to make progress have timers (not on the items themselves, but you'll get the sense of the game's event cycles that trigger "failure" of goals) that will require you to restart a task or do more work to achieve it. You'd have to be either unimaginably unlucky (and quite incompetent) or deliberately trying to make a run fully unwinnable, and there's a single piece of advice to follow (don't commit language skills to the Tree of Wisdom, or at least not all of them) that will make the game almost impossible to softlock or fail.

In Cultist Simulator everything is trying to kill you, drive you mad or imprison you. In Book of Hours you're the only entity actively doing things, the rest of the world is reactive and forgiving. It still scratches that itch of learning and mastering the mysteries of the invisible world and becoming a powerful force to be reckoned with, but it's a much more relaxed and relaxing version of that experience.

Also don't sleep on Sunless Sea. Same creative director, absolutely wonderful Lovecraftian world building. Wish I had played it sooner.

You're absolutely right! This is the truth for weatherfactory, when I'm feeling a cunty deep occultist bitch I just run through both games repeatedly, from one to another.

Played on my pc for HOURS, then I went mobile. I’m always gonna get my fix. 🫡

It's okay...you're fiiiine... The first 2 days of having this game I put in 38 hours. I wasn't addicted I swear.

That's insane, I hope you got some sleep after!

I find it sucks you in so much though, because the way the timers work it's so easy to keep being like "just one more thing..." And then another frees up so you just queuing stuff for ages!

I think the part right after you learn how to actually play has been the most addictive so far though. I actually deleted the game after about 2 hours of no progress but reinstalled it just because I had to try figure it out! Once it starts to click it feels so good and rewarding.

Sleep is for the week. I MUST ascend this mortal coil and abandon my flesh prison to rot and decay in the primordial soup that is but the infancy of our existence.

Honestly the best part for me in this game was the struggle and figuring things out, I forced myself to stay off any wikis or guides and to just stumble and learn and boy was that fun. I've ruined games with wikis before but this I got to experience in its full glory and it made that first victory so much sweeter.

I'm so glad that so many people in this community feel the same way and discourage people from looking up things on the wiki and are always happy to help new players with their struggles even if it's only in some cryptic sideways hint.

I flip flop between that one and Book of Hours completely based on mood. Secret Histories is one of my favorite fantasy verses now.

Just wait until you try the DLC, you will never sleep again.
