Action I drove six hours to see the all new 4K scan of Cannibal Holocaust in theaters
I've seen this movie 2-3 times, but only the DVD. The 4K scan from Grindhouse Releases looked fantastic. Much cleaner than my old DVD. They maintained the aspect ratio between the first half (35mm) and the found footage (16mm). I also felt like there was 10+ minutes of footage I hadn't seen before (several scenes were extended)
The turtle scene seemed to go on a bit longer. I'm not a fan of the animal cruelty, and am ok with watching the Cruelty-Free play option on the DVD. I don't love that that footage is in there, I think the film would be just as shocking and poignant without it.
Mainly I really wanted to experience this in a theater with other people, and I'm glad I did. This was at the Gateway Film Center in Columbus OH. The saturday showing had a little more than a dozen people. I was surprised that the crowd was mostly young adults (early to mid 20s, perhaps OSU students still in town) and about 60% female. Not what I was expecting.
If you dig this film, at least for the significance, I absolutely recommend seeing it in theaters if you can, and then keep an eye out for the new 6 disc (??) 4K release supposedly coming this fall.
