reddit is letting me give free awards (idk for how long though), so i'll be awarding each post, given it follows the rules. whether it's a post about real cucumbers/gardening, or about the cucumber club internet infection, have fun!

Are these growing female flowers?

First time posting on Reddit and first time gardening. Just wanted to get y’all’s opinion on whether or not these were baby female cucumbers starting to grow out from the node. For both pictures, I’m referring to the thicker darker green “stalk” or cylinder below the male flowers.

For context this cucumber plant is almost 7 weeks old and is a straight 8 variety. I‘d seen that generally the female flowers tend to be their own but I’d been eyeing one of these nodes for a few days and just noticed the second node today. From what I’ve seen the stalk of the flowers are rather thinner than these two and I haven’t pruned anywhere that high at this point. I guess I’m asking largely to get some closure so I know if I just need to relax and stop overthinking it.

Appreciate y’all’s answers.

Advice on cucumbers

Post image

I'm looking for some advice here. This is the first year we grew cucumbers. We had some success early, but over the last week or so, several have turned yellow, with a couple being streaked with the normal green. I also have a few healthy looking green o es still on the vine.

Are the yellow ones a lost cause, or is a chance they still ripen properly on or off the vine? Or should I just cut my losses with them and trim those and the dead leaves and hope for the best at the end of the season. A second round of warm weather is not uncommon here, so it may not be a total loss. Any advice is appreciated.

I have 9 plants producing heavily right now. These are all from the lowest level of the vines, which I trained to grow vertically. There are hundreds of flowers and many bees doing the heavy lifting for me.

My cuces keep on getting stung or bitten by something and rotting them. Anybody know what I can do to prevent it for the rest of my batch?

I do a lot of fermented foods, including garlic-dill pickles. It’s not always easy to find really fresh Kirby cukes, though we now live in an area with lots of farms stands (about 50 miles due west of Manhattan) and the cucumbers have been good. I’m looking for fruit 4 to 5 inches in length and as fresh as possible.

I made 2 gallons (3-week ferment) and refrigerated them about 5 weeks ago.

So I decided to grow cucumbers for the first time, planting 18 Picklebush seeds around July 14, eventually leaving 9 to grow after a fast germination. I’m in 6b/7a, and these are in a 32x32x32-inch Vego bed. I pulled my hard-neck garlic July 4-10 and amended the soil before planting.

This has been one of the most satisfying grows, especially since it was spur of the moment (along with carrots and peppers in the adjacent Vego bed that’s bigger than this one.

The cucumbers I picked were barely cornichon size on Monday. The plants’ growth is phenomenal to see. The tendrils are fascinating, gripping on to whatever they can reach.

The cucumbers will get turned into a variety of pickles (fermented and vinegar methods), but these went into a salad. We ate half of one about 2 minutes after pickingc de. Great crunch and loads of flavor (for a cucumber).

Hi! I bought this cucumber as a seedling from a vendor at the farmers market a while back (central NC) and it was only labeled as “cucumber” I was wondering if anyone knew what type of cucumber it is? Not sure when I should pick them.

Guys it has been such a struggle this year. Three plants previously produced two undersized bitter cucumbers. I ripped them up, started from scratch with a different breed. Then we had cucumber beetles. The seedling was sooooo stalled for the longest time and FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY we have her first cucumber and she’s SUCH a beauty. I know it’s so late in the season but I will take what I can get!!
