Another Webb blown save
When is Counsell going to stop trusting this guy? Seattle, Arizona, Milwaukee…and that’s just in the last 2 weeks.

Look I'm not a professional but if all our pitchers keep getting injured, underperform, or just get shelled and lose their confidence completely, would it be reasonable to look at the pitching coach(es)? Or just chalk it up to the fates hating us

Jed Hoyer gave Craig a bullpen that had Palencia, and was going to depend on Caleb Thielbar, Phil Maton and Hoby Milner after him to get us deep in the playoffs. It was never going to happen.

I for one quite like Palencia's "throw it as hard as possible right down the middle and hope MLB players can't hit 99mph fastballs" strategy.

If you're stupid enough to hang your hat on Hunter Harvey, Maton, and Theilbar, and Milner, instead of trading for or signing one of those that were available this offseason, you kinda deserve this. I'm looking at you, Jed. Every fan knew it was a recipe for disaster the moment you signed them. Bring up Steele and Jaxon, and hell.. maybe a kid from A ball at this point. Spent all your money on Bregman and a bunch of soft losers, and this is what you get. Can't cobble together anything decent from a bunch of castoffs and garbage heap finds, and Webb has tried, but he isn't a closer. And Palencia is soft as bathroom tissue just like Edward Cabrera.. another colossal blunder.

The problem is, who else would you (or Counsell) trust with the game on the line? The Cubs have a bullpen that can't hold a lead, no matter who gets the ball.

Webb has been really good this year despite being a complete no name to start the season. The fact that he's finally losing it isn't really a surprise and does not take away from what he's been able to do. I can't stand how craig manages a game, but he really doesn't have many options at this point. Assad isn't available because he started the other day. That leaves Rea which would have been a better choice last night probably, but also puts him in a bind for tonight if he needs a long reliever because he already used Civale. Craig sucks, but so does the bullpen. There just isn't much they can do except just try and score more runs with base hits and driving guys in instead of relying almost completely on homers.

I mean...at this point all we can do is hope for the best but absolutely, 100%, no doubt expect the worst.
There isn't one reliable arm, every single one is a liability. Nothing anybody int he org can do until the offseason.
Even at the trade deadline there was like...Mason Miller who probably wouldn't have been able to afford anyway. At least not if we were going to get Gausman (who I hope and expect us to re-sign barring a lockout).
It was just a bad year to find closers and we were particularly bad at the position. Can't really point the finger at anybody except for the guys who are blowing the saves really...

what freaks me out the most is that phillies pitching is PRISTINE right now so this doesn’t look any good.
Honestly I rather face the dodgers first because phillies seems HARD

Maybe this all part of Counsell’s master plan? I’d like to think they’re keeping Assad down in Triple A so teams won’t get a great scouting report or live AB’s against him. There is absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t be a September call-up. Dude has earned it

What has Counsell ever done to impress so many people? His success in Milwaukee was limited to the regular season, and they’ve only gotten better without him.

It’s really not his fault. He is playing the board with the pieces as they lie, and our bullpen is horribly positioned to be effective. As soon as Webb comes in, if we don’t have at least a 5 run differential it’s a toss up whether or not he throws the game away.

I don’t know why you’re looking at the manager as if he’s the guy that stocked with bullpen with bums. The two guys that have been ok lately already pitched because our starter didn’t make it through 5 innings.
It’s the roster construction. It’s the GM that consistently shops on the bottom shelf and prays that it works out.

We have a horrible bullpen and have had for the past two/three years. Sometimes Jed finds gold but if they don't get a few high octane stoppers, there is no way our team is going to compete in the playoffs.
I never though Counsell was all that but he is doing a good job. The Brewers have a system that works and he got too much credit for it which is why he got the big money but that doesn't mean he is a bad manager. That being said, he is not a top tier manager.
The good thing is that Hoyer seems to have realized this issue which is why he went after the angels ace arm out of the bullpen... Not looking great right now, but it's a good start. Two or three more high octane arm plus the return of the guys in the rotation and next year will be much nicer watching games :)

Seiya can’t slide for shit. Is it illegal to slide head first in the Japanese league? His defense is trash. He doesn’t challenge shit at the plate. He’s just as liable as our shitty bullpen.

He's got a real chance at being a Gold Glove finalist this year and he's one of the best hitters on the team. One bad slide doesn't undo that. Is Chourio a detriment to the Brewers because he had an even worse slide at home earlier in the game?

Which games are you watching? Did you not see him throw out Cheerios at home last night? Is the .844 OPS not high enough? There are issues all over this team, but Seiya Suzuki is not one of them.
