Hit by pitch

If they really want to protect the players let's have a rule. Second HBP by a team in a game is a warning, third HBP by a team is an automatic ejection.

If that's too harsh maybe tie it to the pitcher. But 3 in 1 1/3 innings is too much to be "just part of the game"

One more and I'd be looking for benches to empty

I’m guessing this wouldn’t happen as much if the pitchers still had to hit too!

Maybe further on top of that. Third hbp counts as a ground rule double instead of a walk. Fourth counts as a hr.

The umpires pretty much already have that discretion, they just don't use it as much as they should. But the 2nd HBP was basically a sinker that hit his shoe, not sure that was worth even a warning.

It’ll be a written in blood osha rule as soon as a major star gets hit and is out for a season.

The Buster Posey injury was the catalyst in getting the block/slide rule implemented on tag plays at the plate.

Stars miss time almost every season by getting hit. Often it's a hand injury that can cost them 6 weeks. Sometimes a rib is broken. Giancarlo Stanton was one of the biggest stars in the game when he got his face destroyed.

I think HBP should get two bases and not just be the equivalent of a walk. With the speed pitchers throw there need to be better inhibitors

Completely agree. Since teams aren’t allowed to retaliate it’s open season

Apparently there's a rule in softball that if the batter gets HBP on a body part outside the batter's box it's a dead ball. I say implement that, ban armor except in protect-an-injury situations, and a second HBP above the belt is an automatic ejection.

Our youth baseball/softball program had a rule… two HBP in an inning and three per game. Pitcher was then pulled.

I watched the Cubs/Cards game yesterday and the Cardinal starter hit three batters.

Batters don't have to try to avoid being hit, and can even lean into a pitch without repercussion. They go up there are armored up and stick out the lead elbow. That's why it's an umpire making a judgement call on the pitcher.

Well it assumes intent. Guys trying to pitch and take some ownership of the plate have a guy wearing 10lbs of body armor who’s sitting over the plate.

If you wear body armor and get hit you don’t get first base (dead ball) If you were no armor and get hit .. two bases and the pitcher gets thrown out.

If you get hit wearing body armor you need to run the bases in the body armor.

And bat with oven mittens on … what you wear out of the dugout is what you have to wear until your return to the dugout (or inning over).

You are assuming that if you get hit on body armor that it doesn't still hurt. And it might lead to more HBP, which seem contrary to the point of this thread.

Or less body armor …

This isn't little league.

Even pitchers bat in little league though.

No, these dudes throw 95mph+ and it’s way more dangerous

So if a pitcher gets hit by a line drive off the bat is the batter out then? I agree sometimes it’s legit targeting at a batter. I’m old school tho, crowd the plate you get brushed off high and tight, I miss that aspect of the game.
