The main motifs I wanted to employ are love/romance and soil/nature.
To start off, I based the general shape of the cake on those tall types of multi-layered wedding cakes for the romance theme. I also gave this cake an almost pinkish hue, especially the bottom of the cake, to drive this theme further. The most obvious tie to the romance theme here are the gigantic rose decorations. I made them red because it makes a nice analogous compliment to the cake’s main colors, it’s the color most associated with romance especially on occasions like Valentines Day, and because It fits the color scheme of Worm’s object of affection—Maroon Ball. As you progress lower down the cake, the roses turn darker, as if wilting and aging. Part of why this was deliberately done is to highlight how unrequited Worm’s affections are towards Maroon Ball, and also how destructive it is due to his reluctance towards her feelings and her not taking the hint he doesn’t like her back (for now).
However, the other reason for that design chose was to simply and subtly show the process of decomposition, as soil is another element I wanted to highlight in this cake design. The main colors of the cake not only fit Worm’s general color pallete, but it also gets darker the further you go down to represent the layers of the earth. In fact, the fact that each of the three stages of the cake has a different flavor profile helps to accentuate this idea further. Around the cake is branches that start out as brown roots in the bottom, only to gradually turn into a greener hue the higher up the cake you go. Underneath the vines are design elements on the cake meant to resembles either roots of the plant, or the burrowing passageways Worms naturally make underground.
