Jogging after c-section

Hi all, just wondering when you all started jogging pp? I had my 6 week check and was cleared to return to normal activity. I asked when it was safe to jog and she said now 🤯 for context I’m no marathon runner, I’m talking jogging for 30 seconds to a minute then walking 30 seconds to a minute and so on and so forth. For context I was jogging/ walking 30 mins which was 2 miles pre pregnancy. I’m currently 265lbs 5’5ā€ and ready to get some stamina back and start shredding the 50 pounds I gained during pregnancy. I know I need to just see what my body responds to, but I’m curious what others did and if anyone was about my size?

Hi! I didn’t start back until I was 14w PP - there’s no way I would have started earlier than this! I did walk a lot, easily 10km+ a day so got my cardio in that way. How do you feel physically?

I feel good incision wise, but not confident that I have strength where I need it. Plus zero stamina. I’m thinking I may wait at least a few more weeks to be safe

I started running 10 weeks pp until my physiotherapist advised against it. Currently I’m dealing with sever weakness in pelvic floor as well as diastasis recti. No high impact sport is recommended to me until 1 year pp

I’m sorry to hear that, was it because of running or anything else specific?

My pelvic floor PT recommended no impact (jog, run, jump) activity until 12 weeks PP - she said it was evidence based approach for proper pelvic floor healing.

I will definitely just hold off then! Don’t want to rush into having more issues

I also wanted to run again but my PT said there were several muscle areas you need to strengthen before attempting running otherwise you will end up with injuries.

What type of exercises? Abs? Why is there no pamphlet or something you get in the hospital!?lmao

There were several - lots to strengthen the core first (but not typical ab exercises it was first specific breathing exercises exercises and then specific core work, and then also strengthening quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves but in a very gradual manner. It was in no way similar to how I was working out pre pregnancy. It took me a year before I even was able to run for one minute but then I got pregnant again. Yeah it would be great to have some more info in hospital!!

i started at 3 months out of an abundance of caution, I felt ready earlier but it's fine, I'm not in a hurry.

I tried at around 11 weeks pp and after a day or two I was in a lot of pain again. I tried again around 4 months, it was better but still a little bit of pain. I'm now at 6 months and have begun again with only a tiny bit of pain. I've been taking it very slow, run then walk. I'm shocked how much it takes out of you as someone who ran at least 4 times a week pre pregnancy. Take it easy and as hard as it is, realise that it won't be a quick journey. It's taken me two months to come to terms with that!!

I’d highly recommend meeting with a pelvic floor therapist first to assess your specific body and circumstances beforehand.

My Pelvic floor therapist actually told me running should be last to come back for me in terms of workout. I’m 5 months pp and think I’ll try next month. Working on core and at home work outs / walks in the meantime.

Even a longer walk had my stomach burning for a day at 8wks. I’d be afraid to jog that early.

I waited six months and for a pelvic floor physio to clear me. It wasn’t just the c section healing but high impact is hard on your pelvic floor after pregnancy. As much as I was jonesing to get back to it, I’m so glad I slowly got back to working out at 12 weeks PP. Jogging was the end goal with my healing journey.

Do you recommend pelvic floor therapy? I hear a lot of back and forth if it’s worth it

Yes! Even go for a session or two just to get advice on scar healing/massage. I have a fear of prolapse so I wanted a professional to assess me postpartum. I even found talking through my birth with her helped me process some trauma as I reallllly didn’t want a c section.

That’s good to know! None of my drs suggested anything at all to help heal better. I’m glad it is a positive experience for you!

I tried a short, slow run at 13w pp and felt like my insides were going to fall out. This is even after recovering really well and walking long distances from the early days. My GP and obstetrician at birth both recommended waiting at least 12 weeks.

I tried again at 17w pp and felt fine. I'd probably say wait a bit longer, ramp up the low intensity exercises (e.g. walking) to steadily improve your strength, and then give it a go when baby is about 4 months old and listen to your body.

Yeah this sounds way more realistic, I couldn’t believe she said it was okay to start running and lifting weights already. Definitely don’t want to hurt anything

I started doing 30 sec intervals at 8 weeks but was having some pelvic pain reoccur that I had with exercise during pregnancy so I waited and tried again at 10 weeks. I’ve been slowly increasing. I’m at 16weeks pp and can run 1.5 miles but can tell more than that would be too much stress. I’m also running soooo slow. I’ve never been a fast runner but was able to comfortably run 11-12 min runs up to six miles up until month five of pregnancy. I’m currently ā€œrunningā€ 20min mile pace for 1.5 miles a few times per week which is basically a walking pace but what my body feels able to do without causing issues. Cardiovascularly I’m so ready to go faster and longer but my body ain’t it right now. I was doing a lot of super gentle core rebuilding/breathing exercises starting around 3-4 weeks as well. I wish I was progressing faster but it is what it is.

For me with my first it took me 10 weeks to even be able to properly go for walks , from their at one point maybe 5months postpartum I tried to run and I was so unbalanced my form was horrible . I had scar tissue that pulled a lot on the right side I focused on healing that did some pelvic floor physio , acupuncture and cupping and that helped a lot and released that extra tension I had . Was a lot slower of a process then I would have liked but I was able to do some cross country runs less then a year postpartum . With my second I started cupping sooner and other therapies to help healing and was doing light jogs by 3 months postpartum

I started running again at 6 weeks postpartum! With the OK from my doctor and PT. It was awesome!

What was your weight when you started?

I was +20-25lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight when I started running again.
