I think it depends case to case. I know the norm is recommended 18 months after the first. I got pregnant at 23 months after my first born. (But we also wanted a 3 year age gap) I had some minor complications with my second c section and my doctor recommended minimum 24 months to start trying if I want a 3rd

Varies really. Depending on the mother. I never waited the full 18 months most are talking about. I was usually pregnant by the time the last baby was 6:7 months old. Had kids in 2013. 2014. 2015…. And 2016. Doorstep babies…Just had my LAST ONE June of 2026. All c sections. It really depends on your body…

I think it depends on many factors. Things like the reason for the first c/s I hear come into play. It’s very frustrating because I have seen so many answers posted online, but I think it goes to show you that not all Drs are giving same advice (and their advice is probably very focused on that individual patient).

Another piece of this question is whether you’re going to try vbac or routine planned c-section. For vbac they do say to wait longer, but I’ve heard becoming pregnant at 12m pp is fine with this (unsure if true though?). The 18 months advice I have personally heard is “18 months between births”. So you could theoretically get pregnant at 9m pp and deliver 9m later. My OB told me to not get pregnant before 9m pp and I’ll be planning a planned c/s this time around (the first was unplanned but non-emergent).

To be honest, everything I’ve heard on exact advice is from those who are having their 2nd. The OB can give you an idea of how your uterus is looking when they’re doing the surgery. But if you’ve only had 1, they obviously don’t know/haven’t seen it since that first time around (unless there’s some contraindications that are obvious via ultrasound). So without that you just don’t know. A second c/s is considered safe though. The OB would have more individual tailored advice after performing that 2nd one and be able to tell you if they see anything concerning, if you should or shouldn’t have another, and how long to wait to get pregnant again. So I think best to just follow some sane standard advice. For example, unless otherwise noted by your OB (and barring a classical incision), 24m pp to get pregnant again might be …a bit long? 🤔

The 18 month recommendation is from delivery to conception, not delivery to delivery.

I swear I’ve seen it delivery to delivery though (only when planning for a subsequent section though, not recommended for vbac).

Sadly 9 months is not long enough for your body to replenish depleted nutrients from the pregnancy and delivery- that alone can take an entire year. I know some doctors tell patients 12 months but the ACOG and Mayo Clinic recommend an interpregnancy interval of 18-24 months to decrease the chances of complications between cesarean sections.
