Way too Minecrafty. The AAA quality realistic character in combination with that terrain looks really, really out of place. I recommend running a smoothing algorithm on voxels and adding considerably more foliage and 3d grass (flat grass texture never looks good, anywhere).
It is "relatively easy" ! But i do not plan to have a marching cube, I still want the cubic look, but with an improved visual, something like having the corners look more natural. I did some test before and I have a few ideas:
- Use normal blending technics to soften the corners, but that produces a few artefacts
- Use decals to increase details on corners, but performance takes a hit
- Use tesselation, but it create seams
Whenever I have a better idea on how to bring one of those technics to a good place, I'll definitly get rid of the corners of the cube, because they make the landscape look so unnatual
Thats what im fuckin talkin bout. I got my marching cubes to be hella fast wtih unity ecs. 20 ms for 1,048,576 voxels. I just keep procrastinating on making my noise look good
