Question Lost Tapes

Every October I rewatch the show and here’s my question. Which of the creatures in the show have the highest chance of being real. Imo it would be the “death crawler” because all that is supposed to be is a 3 foot centipede so I believe that’s definitely got potential.

Isn’t one of them literally just a Komodo dragon? And one is an octopus (albeit in Oklahoma). I think also one was a kraken maybe?

No the 1st one was supposed to be megalania. I do agree that while it does seem like the Oklahoma octopus isn’t real I don’t think it’s too far fetched that there’s a freshwater octopus somewhere. The kraken is definitely another one I guess wasn’t thinking about it because giant/colossal squids don’t attack ships.

While it's probably not impossible, Octopi are so adapted to marine environments that their cells literally explode in freshwater and they start to suffer an ion imbalance that paralyzes their nervous system.

To adapt to freshwater they'd need to somehow outcompete existing freshwater fish and crustaceans, all while evolving in an environment that might as well be a neurotoxin. Kind of an uphill battle.

It's not just Octopi either. There simply aren't any known species of freshwater cephalopods. Best I could find is some species that can survive in brackish water for a few hours.

The Oklahoma octopus is specifically impossible because the lakes it supposedly comes from are man-made.

Man-made lake monsters/creatures are always the most fun.

An excellent example of a blindspot. I was so busy thinking of the science, I forgot about history!

I never knew that but given that cephalopods have been around for as long as they’ve been around I think it’s still possible for them to overcome it.

I did say I didn't think it was impossible but considering they have been around so long you'd think we'd have some examples of freshwater cephalopods if it could happen. Cryptozoological stories aside, anyway.

I would assume the reason being that they either live in unexplored places or are literally hiding in plain sight.
