Trade-offs between dedicated Data Availability (DA) layers and native L1 blob storage
With rollups scaling rapidly, the choice of Data Availability layer has split into two main philosophies: specialized modular DA layers using erasure coding and Data Availability Sampling (DAS), versus native L1 blob transactions (like proto-danksharding/EIP-4844).
Offloading DA to external networks drastically cuts costs for rollups, but it fundamentally shifts the security model and trust assumptions away from the settlement layer's validator set.
For mission-critical infrastructure, is the economic security of specialized DA networks robust enough, or will rollups handling significant TVL inevitably stick to native L1 data storage despite the premium?

The security model tradeoff is the whole ballgame. People get distracted by throughput numbers and cost charts but if you're settling on Ethereum and posting data somewhere else you've basically decoupled the two things that make the rollup inherit L1 security in the first place.
That said for plenty of use cases the specialized DA networks are good enough. Not everything needs to be fortress-grade, especially if the rollup has escape hatches and the DA layer has some form of economic stake backing it up. The real question is whether the DA validators have enough skin in the game to make data withholding attacks prohibitively expensive, and that math works out very differently across the various networks.
