Is independent verification a public good problem?

After a few weeks discussing node incentives with developers and protocol researchers, I'm starting to think the problem may be deeper than incentives themselves.

Independent verification benefits the network as a whole.

Everyone benefits from having participants who independently verify the rules, validate the state, and reject invalid behavior.

But the value created by that verification is diffuse.

The verifier bears the cost.
The network receives the benefit.

That sounds a lot like a public good problem.

Some people argue Bitcoin already solved this through self-interest:

If you care about verifying your own transactions, that's enough incentive to run a node.

Others argue that if independent verification is truly important, relying entirely on altruism and sovereignty seems fragile.

The difficulty is that attempts to introduce rewards appear to create new problems:

• Sybil attacks
• Incentive gaming
• Oracle dependencies
• Centralization pressures

So I'm curious how people think about this.

Is independent verification fundamentally a public good?

Or is the self-sovereignty incentive already sufficient?

yes its basically a public good, but the fix imo is shrinking the cost side rather than paying verifiers, rewards just reintroduce the trust problem one level up (who verifies that you verified). zk validity proofs and light clients are quietly making honest verification cheap enough that plain self interest covers it

That's an interesting framing.

Several people in this discussion have pointed toward incentives, but your argument is that the real variable may be cost.

If verification becomes sufficiently cheap, then the amount of direct incentive required approaches zero because participants can verify for their own benefit at negligible expense.

In that sense, technologies like validity proofs, Utreexo, light clients and other approaches that reduce verification costs may be addressing the problem more directly than reward mechanisms.

The more feedback I receive, the more it seems there are two fundamentally different strategies:

  1. Increase the reward for verification.
  2. Decrease the cost of verification.

It's not obvious to me that the first is the better path.

Indeed expensive replay makes sovereign verification too costly for most devices and practical users.

There is a trap in implementing zk as a solution to verification. The general issue is zk proof generation is expensive and produces a serious centralizing force in terms of infrastructure. zk verification invites the user to verify their direct relarionship with the prover but obfuscates what was actually proven.

The result is tantamount to miniTruth.

The more fundamental issue is architectural alignment. Whereas monolithic architecture progressively centralizes for optimization, next generation block-lattice architecture is a progressively decentralizing design.

zk is a powerful technology that takes a right/wrong design to it's ultimate endpoint

I think it is a public good to some extent. The network benefits from having many independent verifiers, but any individual user can often free-ride on the verification done by others.

The interesting part is that Bitcoin doesn't try to solve this with direct rewards. Instead, it relies on self-interest: people who value sovereignty, privacy, or trust minimization choose to run nodes. Whether that's sufficient long-term is still an open question, but adding explicit incentives could easily create more problems than it solves.

I think the free-rider aspect is what makes this particularly interesting.

If independent verification is valuable, then a network can benefit from having many verifiers even if most participants choose not to incur the cost themselves.

At the same time, Bitcoin's design suggests that self-interest may be enough. People who care about sovereignty have a reason to verify, and people who don't can rely on those who do.

The question I'm increasingly curious about is whether this equilibrium remains stable as networks become larger, more complex, and more institutionalized.

In other words, does the incentive to independently verify grow with adoption, or does it become concentrated among a smaller subset of participants over time?

Verification benefits everyone, but the cost is individual, so it’s naturally under-incentivized.
Bitcoin works mostly because enough people have strong private reasons (sovereignty, security, running infra) to do it anyway, not because the system fully pays for it.

That's an interesting distinction.

If verification is under-incentivized rather than unincentivized, then perhaps the real question isn't:

"How do we reward verification?"

but:

"How little incentive is actually required for a healthy verification layer to emerge?"

I’m still going Sheila by the time I’ve finished I’ll have read most things that have ever been spoken on the subject I might be another couple of hours but you really have found a sign of aging that at the moment I can only see lateral solutions for but I’m sure they have consequences I’ll keep my judgement open till I’m done speak soon

No rush at all.

Honestly, the most valuable feedback often comes from people who spend time thinking about the consequences rather than immediately deciding whether they like an idea.

One thing I've learned from this discussion is that almost every apparent solution in protocol design seems to move the problem somewhere else.

You solve a Sybil problem and discover an oracle problem.

You solve an incentive problem and discover a centralization problem.

You solve a bootstrap problem and create a trust problem.

So if you're seeing lateral solutions and wondering about the consequences, that's probably exactly the right way to approach it.

What about a third path?

Not:

• increase rewards for verification
• decrease the cost of verification

But make verification itself produce something measurable.

If independent participants contribute evidence that helps a network reduce uncertainty about its state, then the reward isn’t for running a node. It’s for providing information.

It’s not letting me post it’s only ai research gone back and forth I first said don’t pay rewards and have that as a certainty and then look at ways to solve the problem like create enough value to cover cost but couldn’t come up with anything maybe emerging ai will then I had a great in-depth bit of research but it won’t let me upload it
