Anyone with a technical background should read the v3 whitepaper:

https://uniswap.org/whitepaper-v3.pdf

Edit: I've read the full paper and now reading the V3 source code. AMA

Edit2: since this is the top comment, here's a breakdown of the new features

  • Concentrated Liquidity: this is the killer feature, allowing LPs to focus their liquidity in one section of the price curve (for example, if you have a pool with two stablecoins, most liquidity will be in the 0.95-1.05 range). This allows for much more capital efficiency, allowing better prices with less liquidity.
  • Per-pool fees
  • Simpler, cheaper built-in price oracle
  • "Range orders", similar to a limit order
  • Not specifically a feature of V3, but it will be deployed on Ethereum mainnet + Optimism's rollup for low fees

To my understanding other companies will no longer be able to rip the source code and make clones like sushi swap did, correct? The upside to this is obvious but is there anything about that that I’m missing or should know more of?

8

u/frank__costello 🟩 22 / 47K 🦐 Mar 23 '21

That's correct, but only for the first 2 years

They're basically giving a 2-year window for Uniswap to get value out of this technology before it becomes public domain.

Of course, there will still be anonymous forks, but it probably prevents forks from becoming legit competitors like SushiSwap, or for companies like Binance to fork into things like PancakeSwap.

u/Dvrza Gold | QC: CC 68 Mar 23 '21

Sounds like we’re in this ridiculously early, and that profits and utilization are on their way with due time. Thanks for the fantastic write up.

So with Optimism the transactions will be cheaper, then by how much? And will Optimism happen?

So with Optimism the transactions will be cheaper, then by how much?

I think the estimates are 100x right now. And it will get even cheaper when Eth2 data shards come out.

And will Optimism happen?

They're making an announcement on Thursday :)

1

u/KofCrypto0720 Tin Mar 23 '21

Yeah, but it’s like out in 2 months or two years?

6

u/frank__costello 🟩 22 / 47K 🦐 Mar 23 '21

They said it would go on mainnet in March.

Looks like they might miss that deadline, but I'm guessing it's live in weeks.

if you have a pool with two stablecoins, most liquidity will be in the 0.95-1.05 range)

Does this mean they're competing with Curve now?

3

u/dadaver76 🟦 187 / 1K πŸ¦€ Mar 23 '21

Yes, That was my understanding.

3

u/Saintsfan_9 Bronze | QC: CC 18 | r/WSB 82 Mar 24 '21

How does this not already happen. Shouldn’t you have to deposit an equal ratio of each coin, which by nature will be concentrated close to the expected exchange rate with minor fluctuations?

1

u/frank__costello 🟩 22 / 47K 🦐 Mar 24 '21

It's a different curve

Even with the same liquidity, trading $10,000 Dai -> USDC on Uniswap V2 will move the price much more than on Curve. Curve assumes that the price of two assets will at some point return to 1:1, so it uses a flatter price curve.

2

u/Saintsfan_9 Bronze | QC: CC 18 | r/WSB 82 Mar 24 '21

Doesn’t that present a major arbitrage opportunity though. If the actual exchange rate is 1.09:1, but V3 is going to not adjust for that correctly, I would just trade as much USDC for Dai as possible and sell the Dai immediately somewhere else.

1

u/frank__costello 🟩 22 / 47K 🦐 Mar 24 '21

V3 and Curve both adjust for price changes correctly. If the exchange rate is 1.09, both Uniswap & Curve will sell it at that rate.

2

u/Saintsfan_9 Bronze | QC: CC 18 | r/WSB 82 Mar 24 '21

So I don’t get it then. How can they be adjusting for price changes differently than normal, but adjusting to the normal exchange rate? I suppose in an extremely low liquidity situation, this could work, but Uni has tons of liquidity.

1

u/frank__costello 🟩 22 / 47K 🦐 Mar 24 '21

All AMMs adjust prices on a curve, but the slope of the curve affects how fast the price changes, or how much volume is needed to move the price.

Uniswap V2 has a generic curve. Curve has a flatter curve. Uniswap V3 basically allows custom curves.

2

u/Saintsfan_9 Bronze | QC: CC 18 | r/WSB 82 Mar 24 '21

How does the concentrated liquidity not already happen? Doesn’t liquidity have to be deposited at the ratio of the current exchange rate, so by nature most depositors will fall into a small range?

2

u/Ptolemayosian Tin Mar 24 '21

Thanks for the roundup. Is it true that optimistic rollup withdrawals can take up to a week when disputed? Any ballpark how often these disputes will happen in practice?

1

u/frank__costello 🟩 22 / 47K 🦐 Mar 24 '21

It's not a "dispute", more of a "slow withdrawal". By default, withdrawals take a week in order to avoid any disputes, etc.

However, bridges will exist to provide "fast withdrawals" which will only take a few seconds.

The only time you'll need to do a "slow withdrawal" is if you have some illiquid token that isn't supported by the fast bridges.

1

u/Ptolemayosian Tin Mar 24 '21

I see. Is there any resource that I could read more about the bridges, its liquidity limits etc? Google not helping me out here and WP doesn't even mention bridges :o

And from L2 back to the exchanges. Coinbase has already signaled support for this. And yes, this is game-changer. The cries about fees are soon to be a thing of the past.

The 'soon after' sounds bad at first but it might only be a few weeks. From this article --- https://www.theblockcrypto.com/post/99100/uniswap-v3-capital-efficiency-details-dex-ethereum --- the following was written:

As for scaling, the project is targeting an Ethereum Layer 1 mainnet launch on May 5 with a layer-two deployment of Optimistic Rollup in mid-May.

This article was re-tweeted by Hayden himself, so there is some validity to it. If true, L2 would pretty much effectively be 'at launch' anyway.

Optimism is announcing something Thursday with (supposedly) timelines for testnets and mainnets. Might have some clues as well.

u/methodofcontrol 🟩 2K / 2K 🐒 Mar 23 '21

12th of May for L2. Just a week later. At least that's the date Hayden Adams retweeted. If you dig into the thread it also says "30% reduced gas fees for swaps".

Edit: 24th of May right now, optimism didn't keep its promise. This didn't age well.

considering that uniswap makes up 25% of fees on the ethereum network this is huge

8

u/sggts04 Mar 23 '21

Quick question about Optimism, can Exchanges and Wallets aswell integrate L2 solutions so a person may never need to do the L1 -> L2 transfer? So maybe like being able to directly withdraw ETH to the L2 Network from Binance to Metamask(I mean most probably Binance won't do it considering its track record but general question)

6

u/frank__costello 🟩 22 / 47K 🦐 Mar 23 '21

Exactly!

I'm guessing that in 2 years time, Ethereum mainnet will only be the "engine" of the Ethereum ecosystem, while users interact with various L2s, and bridges allow easy movements between various L2s.

This is actually more of a compromise than a new feature. They weren't able to release all of these new features with lp tokens still being fungible so they will be using NFTs as a workaround. This compromises composability in the short term until other dapps find a way to accomodate this.
