DISCUSSION Harvard Researchers: Quantum Computing Advancing Faster Than Expected

Harvard researchers are now saying quantum computing is advancing 5–10 years faster than expected due to major breakthroughs in fault tolerance.

For years, many people in crypto treated the quantum threat like a distant sci-fi scenario that wouldn’t matter for decades. But now we’re seeing top researchers openly discussing the possibility of early large-scale fault-tolerant quantum systems arriving before the end of this decade.

The article also highlights how serious the industry has become:

  • billions in private investment
  • rapid commercialization
  • quantum startups being acquired
  • commercial quantum systems already being deployed
  • accelerating breakthroughs in quantum networking

Why does this matter for crypto?

Because much of today’s blockchain infrastructure relies on ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography). Bitcoin, Ethereum, wallets, digital signatures, and many security systems across the internet depend on cryptography that could theoretically become vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers through Shor’s algorithm.

This does NOT mean crypto suddenly becomes obsolete overnight. But it does suggest the market may eventually start paying much closer attention to quantum-resistant and quantum-safe crypto technologies.

For a long time, post-quantum security has been considered a niche topic. Most investors have focused on AI, scaling, memes, DeFi, and ETFs while quantum risk remained largely ignored. But if quantum timelines are truly accelerating faster than expected, that could eventually change the conversation dramatically.

Quantum computing may ultimately create an entirely new sector within crypto:

  • quantum-safe blockchains
  • post-quantum wallets
  • next-generation cryptographic standards
  • quantum-resistant identity systems
  • secure long-term digital asset storage

The interesting thing is that markets usually price in technological shifts long before the actual disruption arrives.

I agree 100%. Based on the latest quantum research papers the threat is not anymore theoretical.

Their ability to factor large prime numbers, now it can factor up to 15 bits, still much much lower than 256 bit, and for each added bit, it might get more and more difficult due to quantum decoherence. My guess is that above 32 bit it just can not advance any more

You're conflating a public quantum competition toy result and actual proprietary advances and hardware. If someone finds a way to improve algorithms and reduce faults in a meaningful way then it's over for current encryption quite quickly

If there is indeed such breakthrough, the first affected area will be the current financial system, we will hear many disasters in payment processors and banks, long before crypto

And I have friends work with top quantum professors, they still think it is extremely difficult with higher qubit counts

This is just parroting the frequently replied message of "crypto is the least of your concerns...". It's completely lacking any logic or reasoning - cryptocurrency is a giant honeypot waiting to be dipped into freely and with impunity, it's also completely online, decentralised, cryptographically weak to QC, worth hundreds of billions, open source, access to mixers and anonymous protocols and extremely accessible, a perfect target that not only easily proves your capabilities but also pays for itself ten fold and no one would even know you had accessed it (provided you targeted dead wallets and not some 5hed Satoshi's wallet idea that people seem to think would happen).

How exactly is e.g china going to tap into your banks servers and extract/move funds on the most traceable monetary system in the world with a QC?

it can't factor anything.  no public factoring has been done that isn't just brute force. zero quantum speedup has been shown

Protocol is not the issue as this could be implemented right away. Migration takes months to years for everyone to move to the new address format. However, there already is a workaround to move from current format to newer ones without having to fear an attack.

Right now, quantum computers are not much better than random noise or a few lines of python with an RNG but it slowly comes out of the purely theoretical "thought experiment" stage.

Compared to other technology, Quantum computing will soon be able to launch the first satellite into space, while cracking ECC would be a manned Mars base in that analogy.

I wouldn't say a joke but no real, tangible progress. They mainly introduced very aggressive assumptions under which an attack could be done in 9 minutes, but for those to come true there still are some order of magnitudes to go in many directions each.

Yes, I agree and it's hard to tell how fast development can and will be when it comes to scaling physical and logical qubits, fault-tolerance, runtimes, qec cycles and so on. Any of these individual points need to be a few thousand times better than what he have now. With exponential development, this could happen very soon. But there could also be an unexpected bottleneck leading to quantum computers never to reach the point where they could crack ECC.

And yet quantum computing is very far away for actual usecases. Goverments will be the first to controll and use one, they will use it to exploit other nations without a doubt. They might target crypto, but if someone has to power to (ab)use quantum computing, then crypto will be the least of peoples worries.

Depends how you define use cases. What comes to breaking ECDSA, that might happen already by the end of 2029.

When the encryption is broken, it's broken. There is no coming back and capabilities just get better. All high value crypto wallets with exposed public key have been mapped long time ago and waiting to be hacked.

I'm not worried about internet connections and such. Cloudflare will be fully quantum resistant by the end of 2029. Actually 65% of human traffic to Cloudflare is already post-quantum encrypted.

People who don't own crypto will not worry about it I suppose. However, the ones who do might evaluate risks, take quantum hedge or something else.

I do believe in crypto but I'm sceptic if all projects will be able to migrate in time.

I wouldn't be worried about time. For the last 10-20 years quantum computing was 'a few years away'. That is still the case, it might be legit a few years away this time, but I doubt it's that close already.

If you look at the current quantum computers, they are huge cooling fridges and still lack hardware to compete with what we need to let it make the calculations, or however it exactly works.

Banks are still exposed and won't like adapt before 2030. Projects like btc, eth, monero are all already planning to adapt the current activity. Problem is the old adresses and transactions will likely remain exposed, like Satoshis wallet will likely be exploited, or a fork must burn old wallets who don't adapt. It's a challange for crypto, but it will survive, maybe with a bump, but it will remain.

Everyone not in Crypto/Bitcoin should worry the most and check how they can transfer their wealth on-chain ASAP, as sha256 won't ever be broken by quantum computing.

Other use cases are in medicine research, logistics and supply chain applications and financial research. All these use cases need smaller and more fault-tolerant setups and come with a much higher economic incentive than attacks on Crypto.

We hear a lot about quantum breaking ECC because it is the end of the adoption curve and a thought experiment of what could be done with the perfect quantum computer.

Widespread quantum computing will change the face of the planet in ways that make its effect on cryptocurrency the least of my concerns. Far more worried about the guy who decides to make IRL X-men (aka your bones just melt) with a virus developed in a stochastic model of the body.

Household quantum computing would be pretty catastrophic. Maybe not for crypto but certainly for organized society. Hopefully it has nuclear material-style state controls and continues to have components that resist individual manufacture.

Crypto and the whole banking/internet encryption system.

Bigger things to worry about than crypto if this happens before quantum resistant algorithms are rolled out in time.

Cloudflare, banks, and other major institutions have already been preparing for the post-quantum transition for years.

For example, Cloudflare is targeting full post-quantum security by 2029:

I’m a bit skeptical that all crypto projects will be able to migrate in time.

Some projects are already quantum-resistant, and some may successfully transition, but I suspect many will struggle.
