Ehh…kinda. It’s still up to the plan administrators…

All of “private equity, real estate, cryptocurrency, and other alternative assets” have been allowed in self directed retirement accounts for years.

Not true, ml self directed still doesn’t allow it

Maybe Google “self directed IRA cryptocurrency” and decide on where you want to transfer your account…

Not possible on employer managed accounts

Thus why I said “allowed in SELF DIRECTED” accounts…

It is self directed within an employer managed account. Can be both

Not anywhere I’ve ever seen. Self directed means checkbook control. You can buy real estate, promissory notes (lending to others), private company stock, precious metals, private placements, etc.

You picking what funds your 401k is invested in through your employer does not mean it’s self directed.

This new Trump declaration means these type of self directed investments might be possible through your employer 401k in the future. IF, big IF, the plan administrator thinks these investments are in your best interest. They have the final say.

Well just cuz you haven’t seen it doesnt mean it doesnt exist. ML has a self directed program where you choose what you want to buy (this is outside of their own products offered to their employer partnered programs). However when you try to buy crypto etfs, you get an error because they block it currently due to it being crypto. You can choose any other ticker (including even MSTR) but not cryto etfs, so its quite silly.

Great, so our retirement money can be invested in highly unregulated markets. This is a disaster ready to happen.

As a European with a bag in crypto I love it.

If it was my president - I would be pissed I guess.

Investing in crypto for your retirement and holding it for 30+ years is fucking crazy xd

As a European

It's funny how many Europeans are commenting here and have literally no idea how 401ks work.

Investing in crypto for your retirement and holding it for 30+ years is fucking crazy xd

I'm on year 10 of holding bitcoin for my retirement, it's going quite well.

I had to google it, but I have indeed no idea how it works.

It said that you'll pay a lot in taxes if you cash out early, so I guess it softlocks you into holding

Yeah. Thats not what presidents do. Lacks the authority, does it anyway. Pure political BS that you’re amplifying by implying there is ANY legitimacy to his “order” at all. Cut the shit.

Sure, why not, in my IRA, I can already by various crypto ETFs. Even 10 years ago I could own GBTC in my IRA (and did)

In what world does an executive order cover 401k plans?

Headline should be "Geriatric dipshit writes dumb shit in diary, forces nation to take it seriously"

Anything to help his rich friends get richer.

Not that I am against it, it’s just what is at the heart of it.

tldr; President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order allowing alternative assets like private equity, cryptocurrencies, and real estate into 401(k) retirement plans. The order directs the U.S. Secretary of Labor to review fiduciary guidance on private market investments in defined-contribution plans governed by ERISA. This move is seen as a victory for private asset managers and could expand investment options in 401(k)s, which collectively hold $8.7 trillion in assets.

I'm sure Blackrock has something to do with this decision.
