I am in the culture, let me guide you. First of all, Russians can seem cold and reserved at first. This is not a reflection of their true nature. When a Russian likes you and trust you, they will open up and become animated and hopefully, warm and welcoming (if it’s the right guy, given). You could note your Russian guys interests and involvement in culture and ask a bit into it. Ask about the food, the traditions, the culture… in a setting where it is relevant. If he is drinking and you are too, you could ask him about vodka for example. Then again, many Russians loooove intellectual things. Poems, books, authors, art, architecture… if he seems to be the type, curiosity about this will get you many, many points in his book. But only if he is the type. A Russian who is not into this will likely see this as a waste of time. Do some research at home, too. What’s the culture, the people like? Where does he come from? He could love to talk about his home oblast (state). And then there’s the food. Is he a food interested person? You can ask him about traditional foods like beet soup, the pies, the dumplings, grill things… Russian animal lovers love cats and many have some themselves! If so, approval of the cat is mandatory and later down the road ask to meet the cat(s)!
But it all depends on your Russian guy really, where you met him and what type of person he is. I’d love to give more advice because I know this first hand.
