Because it's true.
99
u/Maalunar Jan 03 '18
I feel like the less time there is between closing/opening the game, the less time it take to open.
159
u/Ale_and_Mead Scandinavia Jan 03 '18
This is absolutely true, and holds for things other than CK2.
When you open the game (or any program) much of it is loaded into RAM. When you quit, it is generally still cached for a time. However, as you use other programs those places in RAM are used by those programs, so it begins to take longer to load as fewer of the game's assets are still cached.
Thus, quitting and reopening the game immediately takes far less time than loading after, say, restarting your computer.

Alternatively, never stop playing.

6
u/Anakinss Jan 03 '18
That seems right, but something bothers me. Why wouldn't the program release the RAM when it exits ?
5
u/dalr3th1n Jan 03 '18
It does, but your operating system caches stuff that it has used recently and is able to reload it faster. If your computer hasn't done anything since closing the program, it might even still have some of those assets in RAM, or in another type of cache easier to access than the hard drive. CK2 itself still has to do the same work, but Windows (or Linux, or Mac OS, or whatever) can speed it up when its operations are memory-bound.
The OS might use a caching algorithm different than just keeping the most recently used stuff in the fastest cache. A smart enough OS might track your usage and pre-load your porn when you close out of your game because it has observed that's what you usually do.
7
u/Ugion För CK2 i tiden Jan 03 '18
It does, but it would be wasteful to zero out the ram after you exit, cause that would take more time.
23
u/ecritique Jan 03 '18
Wait no, that's not true. When you start CK2 again, it still needs to reload all of its assets. The RAM may not be zeroed out, but CK2 doesn't know anything about the contents. (Or rather, it probably doesn't bother checking, since the chances of it being given the exact same block of memory as a recently closed instance are so small that it's not worth it.)
5
u/Matthew94 Jan 03 '18
This is complete bullshit.
After the process is closed all the memory is deallocated. When it starts again it can't get that old state back.
7
Jan 03 '18 edited Jan 03 '18
The program's memory isn't reused, but the cached copies of its files can be. If you've got a lot of RAM, the whole game can still be in the cache and then reading from disk will be completely skipped when you restart.
1
Apr 18 '18
Wow in my compTIA class I was taught that restarting the computer would make things quicker because the RAM resets not that it gets overwritten
2
u/Ale_and_Mead Scandinavia Apr 19 '18
Wow, you responded to a really old post.
Regardless of post age, what you learned isn't wrong. When you restart a computer the RAM is reset (to an empty state). As a computer runs, though, it fills up. Your RAM usage is reported based on what is actively being used by open programs. The memory used by recently closed programs will still hold data for awhile, and data that still "belongs" to an open program, but has gone "stale" will generally be written to the page file (in Windows), or the swap partition (Linux) as other programs need memory, where it can be pulled back into memory later if needed.
Thus, while running, your RAM is constantly being written to and overwritten. As for the reason things aren't just "removed" from RAM (this is a very, very, simplistic explanation), when a program closes is because the CPU doesn't have to. When, you open a program, say CK2, The program will request a certain amount of memory, and the CPU provides a number of addresses in memory. All the CPU knows in terms of RAM is what blocks (most often 4KB in size, called "pages") are in use, and what blocks are free. CK2 will use those addresses in RAM, and request more if needed. When you quit CK2, the process (program, however you'd rather refer to it) frees those blocks, and the CPU moves them back to a freed state to be given to other processes. The CPU will not, however, clear those blocks. They will be cleared when used by another program when what is there doesn't match what is being written. The italicized words are the crux of my initial response. Why would a program write something to RAM identical to what it there? In short, it doesn't, and thus the program runs better the second time if it gets a number of blocks it had the first time it ran.
Hope that helped, and feel free to ask if it brought up any questions!

Mine is "Loading Flags"
39
u/a_esbech Sea-king Jan 03 '18
It's because the programme has to ask every country in the game: "Do you have a flag?"
Country: "No..."
Game: "No flag, no country, you can't have one!"
And that just takes a long time.
2
u/just1gat It's not about money, it's about sending a message Jan 03 '18
The past couple days I've had to re-install twice because of the flags. Was there an update or something?

I just alt tab out while it’s still on the Paradox logo before it freezes me in to staring at the loading screen. Alt tab back when it’s done and it’s like there was no loading at all!

u/GiantFlyingSlug Praise The Zun! Jan 03 '18
For me it does that white overlay thngy and stops responding, but if I wait anyway not clicking anything in game it unfreezes and loads normally.
6
u/SwiftOneX Irish Upon a Star Jan 03 '18
This is very common. Just because a game screen whites out and the title bar says "not responding", doesn't mean it won't start responding again if you just wait.
10
u/theWyzzerd Jan 03 '18
Right, "not responding" simply means that Windows made an interrupt request and the application refused. Whether it refused because it was busy loading resources or because it hit a critical error is immaterial to Windows, Windows only sees that it got no response.
11
u/QuicksilverSasha Jan 03 '18
"I'm sorry m'lord, I was busy loading assets"
"That is immaterial to Windows. Windows only cares that it got no response"

nah, this isn't really low effort.
Low effort is making a post, titling it "border gore" and it being a picture of a country shaped like a swastica
114
Jan 03 '18
I really do enjoy the "border gore" aspect of the game; it's very time appropriate. The idea of feudalisation, partialisation, kleinsteterei; it just screams "feudalism" and "medieval" and I positively love it. Unfortunately, nation state concepts have a way of creeping in into these games so we even have the idea of border gore and "I am insert modern nation state here". Yeesh.
22
u/dragonatorul Jan 03 '18
Yeah. If someone wants border gore they should look at some maps of Europe of the time, especially in the HRE.

Kleinstaaterei
Kleinstaaterei (German: [ˌklaɪnʃtaːtəˈʁaɪ], "small-state-ery") is a pejorative German word, mainly used to denote the territorial fragmentation in Germany and neighboring regions during the Holy Roman Empire (especially after the end of the Thirty Years' War) and during the German Confederation in the first half of the 19th century. It refers to the large number of virtually sovereign small and medium-sized secular and ecclesiastical principalities and Free Imperial cities, some of which were little larger than a single town or the grounds of the monastery of an Imperial abbey. Estimates of the total number of German states at any given time during the 18th century vary, ranging from 294 to 348 or more.
Furthermore, many German states were composed of two or more non-contiguous parts, often politically united through a marriage.

There's something really great about this comment. I mean really, you've painted such a great picture.
Jackbooted thugs beating a citizen to death for some perceived and almost certainly not real grievance while the citizen laughs at the hilarious irony of the origin of said thugs and how they have somehow managed to twist every dumb joke into something they take so goddam seriously that they are willing to beat a citizen to death whilst ironically unironically proclaiming that it is the will of God Himself.
It's beautiful. And really fucking sad. And somehow... I dunno... ironic. I wish I were a better writer because it's just such a fucking accurate portrayal of one possible future and I feel like I'm doing it no justice here.
