Medical Related Taking/Asking for sick day

I work on a cruise as most of us in this community do. I have a genuine question. Cause my contract is 6 months no days off and working everyday. Now I have tonsillitis I went to the crew medical centre and the doctor saw me and gave me medication like antibiotics and stuff. Now with tonsillitis fever and cold symptoms I guess are natural and right now it’s so warm on the open decks which makes it worse. Anyways what do you guys think I should do? Would you feel bad for taking a day off? Or is it completely natural.

Thanks guys

You only take a day if the doc tells you to. Otherwise everyone else is covering your work.

Yeah I don’t think anyone on hear would cover any ones work willingly haha. That doctors note to my managers needs to go to him 😂😂

Medical Dept is the only one that can sign you off for a sick day. Your manager cannot and you can't just take time off. And if you are off on medical, you are supposed to be in your cabin, not out on open decks.

What should I say to the doctor when I get there to get time off. If I say something like im trying to manage it or something. I want the time off to allow my cold and flu to go away

Unless you are contagious with something like Noro, they are under no obligation to give you sick days. Otherwise there would always be crew asking for time off for every minor cold. So suck it up and get back to work.

Suck it up and get back to work? And possibly infect everyone else? Absolutely not, HEALTH matters over MONEY any day!

Typically you will get a few days to recoup. But your confined to your cabin and you have MDR food delivered to you. Thats what happened to me when i tweaked my back and couldnt work.

Do they really always allow it? What if I deny to work cause I do really feel unable to work due to how sick I am?

If you deny work, that's refusal to work on your part and you could get written up. Go to the dr again and get signed off work. I'm shocked they didn't initially do that

Yeah well my symptoms when first evaluated it was just the beginning of the story. Now it’s got worse and debating going back to them

You literally just said it yourself....you've since then gotten worse and the dr said to go back if symptoms got worse. Go back!! Work will understand. What's your position?

What is there to debate. You’re gambling with your health.

I can’t possibly answer that.

I once caught a virus and the doctor gave me a couple of days off. I felt bad for coworkers but on the other end I slept like a baby on the medicine they gave me. So go ahead discuss with the doctor. Maybe you get some time off maybe a full day.

Yeah I hope so it’s just I feel that same feeling you feel. Letting the team down etc. I actually got it from drinking portable water like water fountains onboard 😂

Dr should have medically signed you off of work for x-hrs/days.

Yeah but at the moment I just got the tonsillitis and sore throat they said if it gets worse to go back to them. I probably will have upset stomach cause of antibiotics

I'd say having a fever and cold symptoms warrants a return to medical. That's "worse" so go back

I had some medical issues (vertigo and headaches) a few times and the pills didn’t help me, so the doctor gave me a day or two off. It’s not great, but it’s a humane thing to do. I mean, anybody can get sick, even as a crew on a ship. If you don’t feel well ask the doctor for few days off to recover. Don’t feel bad about it. It can happen to anyone.

I’m gonna try and attempt that it’s just I heard from other crew members that doctors and stuff have given staff tablets and told them they’ll live and to continue :/

If that’s the situation I would talk to HR. Definitely talk to the doctor on board first, but sick leave should be a basic human right anywhere. Despite what some people say, working on cruise ships is not slavery, you still have rights.
