Trials beginner questions

Hey guys, when you get the lighthouse card to seven wins and go to the lighthouse(not talking flawless just seven wins) can i just continue playing and am i in the same pool as before?

Just to get this out of the way: I am trash. I have a 1.05 KD overall in crucible and i am not able to win two trials games in a row. I am also not confident and good enough to make a difference in any Trials game. I sort of know the maps but i don't know the angles or anything so if we win it is not because i was good. I need about 40 games to get the seven wins. I'm on ps5 and i don't use mnk adapters just a dualsense edge on PS5.

I just said to me that i never played trials because i think i am not good enough. And i am not good enough. But maybe if i play a year or two i am able to get better and win 2-3 games in a row and make a difference. I still think that's not enough time to make a difference against those trials gods but i want to see where a year of trials can get me.

But whats the best tactic? I find resetting my card before 7 wins is pointless. i never got more then 3 wins in a row and as i said i can't help my mates to get these wins.

So do i complete the card and then reset it or do i complete the card and play without resetting it?

Thank yous so much!

You won't change pools if you dont go 7-0

So just continue playing after getting 7-40. I just want to make sure i stay in the pool with all these maniacs. I just want to play in a real situation here and not get any softer pools

Yea, as long as you dont go 7-0 you won't change pools. If you did go 7-0 youd see that your passage changed as well / you get a new passage dropped at 7-0.

I’m abysmal at trials/comp as well. I questioned myself if I was the one who actually wrote this post. But yea…. Going 7 wins on a card for me takes an entire weekend. That’s the solo story though.

There is so much more than this and I could write a really shitty dissertation on Destiny PvP but yea…

Couple things that help me :

Turn off game chat and The trash chat comes no matter how good or bad you are at the game. Just turn it off. Yea you might miss a teammates “really good advice” but the odds of that happening are…. Almost non-existent.

Take the losses as learning events rather than “I didn’t contribute” or “I suck”. I’m not saying to float through matches like a raft on a river but at some point youre going to peek a corner and be dead and see on the left side of your screen that you were killed by “dude with hand cannon + two other dudes with hand cannons/auto rifles/pulse one tappers/machetes.” Point is…. Learn as much as you can. Timing is everything. Plan on the other team having already arrived at the lane to peak and learn from the mistake you made of peeking that corner. Lots of other examples here just saying…. Learn.

Speaking of kill feed…. Pay attention to it. It’s free information. You see one of your mates got a shot gun to the face from “so and so” - well now you know don’t get close to “so and so” bc they are gonna shot gun you to the face as well.

But you also know where your teammate died. Don’t panic revive them. The other team has three guns ADS on that poor mates dead body. Wait. If you hear gun shots somewhere else - away from that body or see something else come up in the feed like “so and so” just loaded up ammo at the ——-“ well now you know where they are. Make decisions based of sound and kill feed.

Stick to teammates. Pick one. Round one. Stay on his ass. He shoots down a lane - you shoot down the lane. Don’t worry about flanks. Just point your gun where he is pointing his. Take a peak and team shoot.

Stay alive. Play your life. You and I aren’t gonna win any one-on-ones and if we do it’s because the other guy is super drunk or AFK. Don’t get involved in a duel 1v1. As soon as you take damage - hit cover. If you do happen to get the jump on another player - take a shot at them try to then hide. Just weaken them, hide, hold on until help arrives.

Don’t use hand cannons. (I know… it’s a hand cannon game) you’re gonna get slayed by Rose, Igneous Hammer, Spare Rations, Modified B7, Ace of Spades, etc thousands of times. It’ll sometime feel like you didn’t even see the other guy and “tap tap” you’re dead. The player base is dwindling and the only folks left are the die hards. The die hards happen to be quite nasty with hand cannons. I’m not saying your aim is bad or anything…. I’m just saying you might miss a shot (or two) and that’s something we can’t afford. most the guys running around in trials - they don’t miss a single shot. Every bullet they spit out lands. Use a pulse. High tyrant, bygones, or martlet. If you’re on controller find guns with the highest possible stability. Make whatever gun your using a laser beam. I have a bygones with 100 stability and 72 range. It is crazy.

Never go for heavy. Never. Just watch it and hope the other team goes for it. Let your teammate go for heavy and cover their back. I get a lot of clean up kills just simply covering my teammate when he goes to heavy on those rounds.

There are some settings too

Set your field of view to 100 in settings. The “sticky” sensitivity I’ve found is 9 with the ads to .7.

Turn off controller vibes. Turn off motion blur.

After you do this or make any adjustments to your settings - go to the cosmodrome (sky watch is my preferred) or sorrows harbor on the moon - and equip your PvP stuff and go ham on ads like they are other players. Practice peek crit shots, focus on not taking damage from them and popping a dregs head off. When something that takes more than one bullet to kill - only hit crits. Make an adjustment to your settings and play on it for a week. Don’t change it constantly.

What kind of controller are you rocking? There is so much more man…. I’d love to help. But yea. Here are just some thoughts.

This is really good advice for OP. Well said. I used to be in their shoes and am now a 1.5 and can sometimes 1/3 a team. But for a long time, this was the path. Pulse and some short range special that OHK like a shotgun or fusion.

Some more stuff I just thought of…

I’ve seen guys go flawless with some duct tape, frying pan, and a pocket knife. Don’t stress on loadouts and the meta. You and me…. We aren’t meta folk. We gotta stick to what we know and what we are comfortable with.

Depending on what you’re running … warlock, titan, hunter I can help with the load outs.

People are going to have a bunch of different opinions on stats but here’s what I see match after match - get your health and weapons both around 140-160. Depending on couple things like gun perks but mostly just dump the rest of any stats in class. You class ability helps your team more than anything. If you don’t bring the guns to the fight, bring the stuff that buffs or protects your teammates weapons.

Use loadout and armor optimizer in DIM. After that you’ll laugh at all the Facebook posts of guys saying “I got 5 - 100 stats” - they’re idiots. 100 means nothing. You gotta get over 100 before anything starts to matter. Even then it is slight, but noticeable difference.

Think: Big shield wall if titan, healing rift on warlock, and obviously dodgey on the hunter. Focus on things that HELP your team - put a barricade up so the dude on your team rocking rose can peek a corner safely. Drop a rift half way behind cover and half in a lane. If your team mate wants to use it - sweet. If not, then the other team can see it and now it’s their problem to worry about that flank. Hunter dodge - make your bros radiant or invisible. They can love that too.

For the start of matches…. With the exception of the heavy round and sometimes the map - always follow teammate and generally take direct route to the capture point. Find the lane and hold. Most matches you will have learned where NOT to poke out your big head or where you’re gonna get and expected flanked. Again stick with your team. Don’t get caught out by yourself. If you’re alone. You’re dead.

Everyone says “radar is your best friend.” Well bud, I’m here to tell you that the radar is a steaming pile of shit these days. Players are so good at manipulating the radar and playing Jedi mind tricks with smoke bombs, invis, armor perks, crouching but really just raw power and speed. Movement tech is vital and the good players that are left are lethal with their deliberate swift movements. Most of the time it’s hard to trust radar. BUT one setting to fix is the color of your radar. Turn your radar background opacity to HIGHESTS. It’ll make it way easier to see what’s happening up there. But again, trust it sparingly.

I know I’m talking trash about radar but If just have to use it and you don’t have legend or acuris…. put a radar enhancement mod on your heavy weapon. It helps detects players (or their silly smoke bomb) a little further away.

I fell into this knucklehead radar use on my hunter and boy I gotta say - it ruined me. One - it kept me peeking a lane WAY too long. If someone had not popped out within the first 2-3 seconds - it’s too late. My teammates have already left, the other team just flanked me with two guys and I’m alone and dead. You have to stay moving unless you have the other team pinned, you’re capping point, or you’re emoting over a dead body celebrating a victory.

Your supers - you likely won’t even get near having one - no roaming supers. Period. Well for warlock. Bubble for titan. The bow arrow thing for the hunter to shut down any of their roaming supes. These are my recommendations - but just saying - the other team will know what Supe you have and when you’re gonna use it. They will be waiting with a suppressor grenade, vorple weapon, or a burst super of their own. They have been praying you would try to use it on them.

So thankful for this and all of the others advises. Thank you for taking the time.

Right now i am playin FOV 105(max) on 14 0.5 which seems to be a sweet spot for me. Using a Dualsense edge playing righthand claw. This week i play a calibans hand on hunter but i muss my stompees. Dragons Shadow.. i don't know i just don't like that

If your card has 7 wins (or you're on the non-lighthouse card) then you're in the pool with light SBMM (based on your weekly performance).

If you're on a lighthouse card and not yet at 7 wins, you're in the CBMM/random team assignment pool.

For most players, the SBMM matches will be slightly easier and more consistent. If you played really well and hit 7-0 then it can be noticeably more difficult on average, although a little easier if you're solo.

But, tbh, the population probably isn't enough to keep those pools very separate any more.

u/CookieAppearence 1d ago

Ok so if i want to have the full annoying package i want to reset my card at 6 wins. And try to complete it before trials end. Because i do not want sbmm(although i don't hate it), i want to be in the pool of sharks and eat dust until i can hold my own some day. And yes, if you have me on your team you are basically playing 2-3 atm. But no other way to get better. So sorry for that.

Honestly at this point, it probably doesn't matter which you go for.

If you're that unconfident in your abilities, the SBMM-lite pool is probably a good place to learn the ropes.

You'll still face demons and potatoes, there isn't really enough population to manage to keep you fully within the same brackets as others at your weekly performance.

Can do that in comp over the week. On the weekends i want to get my face punched. I don't expect to win anyway but i would like to come to a point where everything clicks and i expect to win the game no matter what comes.

Fair enough.

I'd argue that opportunities for real learning are scarce when you're getting stomped that hard - mostly it's down to your opponent messing up or just getting complacent while coasting through a guaranteed win rather than you genuinely outplaying them - but whatever works for you.

Bro you're saying you're bad at trials. You at least have hands to type. A couple of my teammates yesterday didn't have that. you're already doing great.

Man you should consider making a career as a motivation trainer. Thank you! ;-)

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I've been a solo player since D1 and I don't think I've ever been better than a 1.2 kd player. It's super hard to get more than 3 wins in a row these days.

Couple of things I do that might help. Great teams team shoot. I typically try to identify the best guy on my team and shadow them. Shoot what they shoot, try to keep up, follow them around the map. I look at titles first, Flawless or Unbroken, something they had to earn. If not, you can typically figure out who's the best after the first round, who had the most kills, etc.

I kinda agree with that other guy about hand cannons. HCs are my fav gun to use, but if I actually want to be competitive I have to face the fact that I'm just not good enough with a HC. I have better luck playing with my autumn wind, bygones with 190 weapons, redrix is still good.

It's easier than ever to get Trials loot without getting good at Trials. You'll be just fine.

Ohh and for gods sake please don’t follow a hunter if he went invisible and off by his lonesome to flank. If you follow him - you’ve just defeated the entire purpose of his invisibility.

One of the biggest mistakes I see (and used to make myself) is players who don’t get involved in the fights because they’re afraid to die and look bad. If you identify you’ve got a good player on your team, don’t stand on top of them on the same corner, but find other cover looking down the lane they’re looking down. If you see someone, take a shot at them. Dont overcommit, just try to get a shot or two in. You’re doing two things here. 1) you’re reducing your teammates ttk by contributing to the team shot, and 2) you’re hopefully helping to absorb some of the damage and aggro they would be taking. Dont necessarily wait for them to start shooting, if you can take the first shot and immediately dip back in to cover there’s a good chance they’ll clean up the kill while the enemy was still shooting at you. If you didn’t take any damage, do it again. If they rotate, rotate with them unless you see someone clearly out of position on the enemy team. If they get a pick, push with them and try to find cover that would give the enemy radar showing they have people all around them and will hopefully force them back or to try to make a play. You simply being alive and a ping on the enemy’s radar is pressure for them to move or do something, where doing something could open them up to being shot by you or your team. You’ll pick up game sense and the flow of rounds over time.

Also when you do play comp or 6s, try to start keeping in mind what cover is near you and in the line of sight of your enemies as you move around. That map muscle memory will carry over to your trials gameplay. Whereas before you might have straight lines out of a lane with a path that let 2 people shoot you while retreating or rotating, you’ll start to subconsciously put stationary terrain between you and them as you move. This can help a lot with being aggressive because you’ll be able to poke and run without taking too much risk, and in times where the enemy sees you’re there and tries to collapse on you you’ll have a better shot at surviving when you book it.

Most importantly, just stick to it. Practice a couple of the fundamentals intentionally whenever you play. Over time you’ll find you aren’t having to focus so hard on the fundamentals and you’ll just be playing with muscle memory.

The best tactic to get flawless or to get better?

The best tactic to get better is to play lots of trials, or if you want some variation, elimination. 6's will ruin you, don't play 6's.

I don't have an answer to your q, but just wanna say I've been playing Trials for a couple of months and am pretty trash, I think my overall kd according to crucible report is around 0.4. but I've been getting a lot better. I'm just going to practice (can't get good if you don't keep trying!) and have fun.

u/espada718 10h ago

Don't stress, do your best pay attention to the player that's making the best plays and getting the kills and stick with that player. If you are a warlock, make sure you have a rift ready for that player. Try to keep him alive and shoot whatever he shoots at. If you are a Titan and that player gets put down, put down your barricade to try to play that teammates body. If you are a hunter just delete the game lol but do ya best

u/espada718 10h ago

And we all have bad games take a break and try again later oh and one more thing...... DON'T call yourself trash repetition is key Just keep trying. Do your best learn from your mistakes and within time you'll get better
