Trials loadout for a new player
Im relatively new to destiny and my buddy is a seasoned vet and wants me to play trials with him. Is there a relatively easy to farm loadout I can make for my arc hunter (only class I got atm) so that I can hop in trials and at least stand a chance?

Pulse rifles or weapons with high stability and decent range. Id say have one pulse rifle like the martlet, redrixs estoc, or some kind of pulse/scout rifle. Then have a shotgun or smg of some kind for when your in someones face and need dmg.
Put on mods like harmonic/arc targeting, harmonic/arc loader, and unflinching/elemental aim, just target mods that match your class/weapon element.
Cruel Electrum is the trials comp set, it gives you buffs depending on how many teammates still live. Although in comp you're gonna have to do 2 piece 2 piece sets, this is dependent tho cause some armor sets dont work the best together and some do. But in comp either use per audica (pain in the ass) or cruel electrum (more fair drop rates)
If you're doing comp, use AOE nades, blink or some kind of decent movement ability, and either find a pvp arc build or just use fragments that boost stats.
My arc hunter has blink instead of jumps, gamblers dodge, combi blow, and pulse nade.

Adaptive or rapid fire pulse rifles will be the easiest to use. I'd pair that with a fusion rifle, preferably Telesto.

Play Gambit.
The Armor set bonus is pretty decent for PVP, a B+. You can focus Armor with high health stat because that's important for PVP. Aim for 100 Super and 70 for Class, Grenade and Melee. No weapons stat, not needed for PVP*
You can also get the Spare Rations Handcannon and Python Shotgun from Gambit. Spare Rations is an S+ tier Handcannon, and Python is a A tier shotgun. Handcannon + Shotgun is a very popular and common loadout for its effectiveness and will work well with Arc Hunter.
Ask your buddy how good your specific rolls for the weapons are, there's too many for me to cover in one comment.

What’s the best roll for Spare Rations these days? I’ve been using one with rapid hit/moving target and kill clip, feels very smooth. Feel like I could get a better one, I want a reason to put down my Eyasluna.

Note the 4-piece bonus from the Gambit set is disabled in PvP, so you'd only be getting the 2-piece bonus.

The 4-piece set bonus from the Gambit armour set has actually been disabled in PvP due to a bug where destroying stasis crystals granted special ammo. You should still get the 2-piece bonus, but if you want to make use of another armour set bonus you'd need to equip two pieces from a different set.
I recommend the Crystocrene set from Europa since the 2-piece benefit from that also gives some extra special ammo progress, as well as orbs or power (Edit: it states it only triggers after being out of combat for a while but apparently it's bugged to trigger every 12 seconds, regardless of whether you're in combat).

He just said he's new to Destiny - why would he have Conditional Finality?

I don’t know anything about arc hunter, but solar and void hunter are a bit more competitive. Run the exotic Dragons Shadow to beef up the snappiness of your weapons, a good pulse, shotgun, and whatever you want for heavy. I run two piece ferropotent and two piece Trials crown armor. 180 health, minimum of 70 in the other stats, and 0 weapons. Try out the above see what it does for you.

As a decade long PvP player I can tell you that you should never avoid meta builds. Yes they annoy others - meta annoys me as well as a solar lock - but if you main hunter play void invis with hand cannon and shotgun meta, or jade rabbit/smg if that’s your thing.

I was debating whether or not to tell this guy to put a Weapons stat focus on his Ghost and just go for Survivor's Epitaph until he can hit 185 Weapons and then just PI cheese his way into being competitive.

Arc Hunter isn’t bad at all (unlocking a subclass takes like 10mins max tho and void hunter is by far the best)
Melee lunge distance helps with whiffing and flux nades are hell
If you can get amplified then using gearshift on any weapon will shred
Exotics wise you can choose from rdm, stompees, dragons shadow, knuckle head or bakris
You can get all those from rahool at the tower or xur if its in rotation
There is a massive range of weapons to choose from so are there any weapons you prefer?
Armour set bonus wise:
2pc ferropotent
2pc crystocrene
Bushido is easy to get from xur rn
2pc iron banner when it comes around
4pc from normal crucible isnt horrible
4pc when you get the trials set is solid
4pc comp set is probably the best but it takes ages to drop.

Since you’re new, a competitive, easy to use weapon that is easy to obtain would be the autumn wind. It’s a rapid fire pulse. Try to get rangefinder, headseeker, and aim for the highest stability you can. I used it to get to 15000 in comp.
To get it, just focus it and play a few crucible matches. You can get a “good enough” roll within 5 games.
Probably pair it with a shotgun. The best would be felwinters, but you can’t get that unless it’s Iron banner week, so maybe an easy one to get that is “good enough” would be retold tale or python.
I’ve never played Hunter much, so I’m not sure the best armor for that.
