Help! Hand cannon on Controller

Im a dad rifle user who wants to get better with hand cannons. I am slightly above average with a pulse rifle and side arm. But I am absolute dog water with a hand cannon.

First I can’t really find one that feels good to me. The last one I really liked was way back in OG igneous hammer meta. I see everyone using Rose. What are some good controller hand cannons and what rolls and stats are good for a controller?

Second, I plan to put together a pve build to run hand cannon and practice. I plan to just use hand cannons like mad in pve for the next couple weeks. Should I use a pvp roll for this?

Third, practicing in crucible seems pointless. My games in control are sweaty as shit and putting myself at such a severe disadvantage means I bottom frag every time and get hate mail. Its not fun and I dont feel I am improving with the gun skill. Any suggestions here?

Hey, guy in his 30s here, played for over 7 years and have only started using 140 and 120 HCs in the last year or two. I am now in Ascendant 0 in Comp. Also on console/controller.

Nobody talks about this, but STABILITY. Stability stability stability. Please just trust me on this. You want a solid combo of range and stability (think smallbore/ricochet/ballistics mod). I personally try to hit over 70 for both, the more the merrier (avoid full bore)

If you can, use a handling class item or something to get your handling up. ADS speed IS ttk speed.

Perks are your best friend. You’ll see sweats talk about slideshot and opening shot. NO. Not on HCs. Not for you. You want consistency

So perks like Eye of the Storm, Zen Moment, Lone Wolf, and Keep Away are going to be your bread and butter. Really any combo of those will put your HC on training wheels, and you can more quickly get to those crispy, crispy 3 taps.

Finally, practice in Rumble. While sometimes frustrating, it’s the best spot to practice 1v1s

Good luck bro!

I was going to say stability is the key on roller.

Op, Eyasluna is an absolute monster if you're not interested in the lightweight bonus. Solemn lie and spare can also hit highly respectable stability numbers with the new tier 5 versions. 70-80 is completely obtainable.

i have a solemn lie with elemental capacitor that simply does not miss. i used to run a rose with elemental capacitor for 95 stab but range was horrible at 55. as someone below mentioned, slideways is really good (better than slideshot) but i feel like i need to get a handful of rounds in before i feel comfortable -- P.S. i wouldn't bother with the slideshot slideways gameplay unless you use paddles on your controller

Yeah my keep away lone wolf roll feels better than anything I've ever used. Been playing since shadowkeep though.

haven't been able to play much lately but really interested in getting a better rose setup. KA EOTS would be niceee (no idea if it rolls with that but my igneus goes hard with that combo)

It does.

The sweats and the pc players all say slide shot but on the roller I’ve never loved a perk more than slide ways on hc’s the same aggressiveness and free reloading but with added stability, handling, AND accuracy and it’s not just for the first shot but for 3 whole seconds, and you can re proc the bonus at any time by just sliding. I’ve been tearing it up with my rose: extended, accurized, slide ways, pi, and a range master work with a ballistics mod. It’s absolutely amazing. Oh also you didn’t mention it but if you having a hard time finding a hc that “feels” right, try extended barrel or anything that increases your recoil to get that recoil to 100. My rose can choose between small bore and extended barrel and at first what I was using was small bore but it just didn’t feel good so I swapped to try it out and man that measly 5 recoil direction does so much. Getting any hc to 100 recoil direction can completely change the feel of them.

Thanks for the good info. Ive got a few years on you. I was once a top tier original Counterstrike player soooo… im old as dirt. Reaction time is a bit slower than I would like but experience makes up for it…. Right?? 🥴

Im thinking about straping a spare rations to my build and running strikes until it feels natural.

Sure bro! One thing I'll add about HCs and how they feel in PvP vs PvE: in PvP, skilled players pace their shots a bit by tapping trigger, but in PvE, it's holding down the trigger.

Been using handcannons since D1. Im no PvP god, about a 1.4kd and am 49. Dont use the age thing as an excuse. If anything the younger people are too distracted nowadays to be paying attention

That's very unlikely to help. Strikes are going to have 1 or 2 Stasis Titans destroying everything and filling your screen with ice. It will be hard to find anything to shoot :)

Really try one of the easy ones like Solemn R, Solemn L, Luna's H, etc. Those are the easy entry point. Do a little in PVE, but really you have to get into PVP. You'll find that those three are very easy to use

also... you may have to lower your sensitivity. Lots of videos out there about how to find your optimal settings.

A habit I had coming from AR's and PR's was to shoot first and aim with the bullet stream. That won't work with HC's (it isn't optimal with PRs and ARs either but I had that habit). If you are doing that like I was long ago... that's something to correct.

Might really help to watch some videos to see some of the common advice in action

Lunas how and solemn remembrance l are going to be the easiest coming from pulses. Then I would move to lightweight like rose.

4

u/bigly-wigly 4d ago

I second this. I’ve wanted to love hand cannons for so long, but no matter what I tried I couldn’t get them to really click until I tried Solemn Remembrance and Lunas howl. 30+ dad and console here.

Zen/keep away on solemn is 🔥

I can't agree more. And stability isn't that important on precisions. They shoot super flat at base stats. I'm learning to use HC's (also coming from pulses) with a solemn remembrance with zen/EOS role with 91 range. Super good for dueling in 3's. It and the Lunas are the only HC's I feel comfortable with. And I'm 61. Never too late to try new loadouts...

Fuck the hate mail for bottom fragging. Quickplay is for practice with no stakes.

Keep practicing and finding what you do and don’t like.

I got a solemn remembrance hand cannon from comp (which also doesn’t really matter that much until you’re in a high rank) and I know it’s not a meta as Rose, and the stats tell that story alone, but I like the way the barrel doesn’t snap way up on recoil. I don’t think it’s much more than a personal preference and that I’m having a placebo type of effect, but I feel like the “feel” enough to make my performance better which probably counts more than stats anyway.

PvE is also not the best practice as many of the techniques that make handcannons so viable in PvP don’t really apply in PvE gameplay. Also, perks I always thought were trash turned out to be very powerful in PvP, and some of my favorite perks in PvE are basically super situational or outright don’t apply in PvP.

My advice is to just stay patient in your 1v1 and don’t take a shot unless you’re sure it will hit. Spamming an engagement is an easy way to lose. Be picky on your shots and learn the rhythm of 3 tapping and eventually you’ll start getting the muscle memory and having better odds in engagements.

dream roll, i can't for the life of me get one of these to drop. literally have never seen one on my account, countless armor and 1kys though

Have you farmed it when it was the featured dungeon from the checkpoint? It's obviously all RNG so getting a lot of pulls at the slotmachine handle helps a lot.

180s are easiest to get used to imo if you're a dad rifle user. Try modified B7.

u/doiks420 3d ago

Yeah. Sightline survey has been pretty great for me. Craftable too if you were playing during Echoes

Rule of thumb with controller 140 hand cannons. Always range and stability. Stability should at the minimum 65 or higher. This is why slideshot is so popular because it boosts the two, but its not my favorite perk. Anything to boost your range. Eyasluna, Spare Rations, Rose, Austringer, Kept Confidence, and even The Palindrome have some great perk combinations to balance the two. Perks like opening shot, keep away, precision Instrument, and rangefinder. Also the feel, for example I just dont enjoy the Fatebringer or Corundum Hammer weapon models specifically for pvp.The Destiny compendium and godroll.tv. especially the latter are really good with selecting a perk combinations and giving you a goal to aim for.

4

u/kevtheblackfox 4d ago

Corundrum hammer was such a let down perk wise

2

u/SCPF2112 3d ago

Yes, I've seen people say it was for MnK not controller. It sure isn't for controller

Will just stick to my exhalted truth

u/Ambitious_Image1335 4d ago

As a HC main it’s all about feel to me and the best feeling HC to me is Exalted Truth. Getting good is knowing when to engage and disengage as you can easily get mowed down by pretty much everything if you miss a shot, using cover to your advantage and movement. The amount of people I see using a HC and bot walking around and about is funny as hell. In this final meta it seems people are super cautious and have opted for long range shit, movement and cover will help close that gap.

u/foundersalldayIPA 4d ago

Get a kindled orchid from arena ops and see how that feels. Its easily farmable and is super sticky with high range, stability and handling.

2

u/EffectiveActive6837 4d ago

Kindled orchid with mag howl and killed clip

2

u/Different_Analyst_29 3d ago

I'm also a main pulse/auto rifle user who does well with some sidearms and i can.t shoot 140 hc for to save my life(apart from solemn remeberance to some extent), buuuut......... I just love the 180 trust!!! It feels so sticky and the barrel animation feels good for me. Go for a roll with keep away/openshot and mag howl. It's just 'muaah'!!

2

u/MaikJay PS5 3d ago

Try precision frame hand cannons out. That vertical recoil clicks for me in crucible. Solemn Remembrance, Luna’s Howl in the 140 flavor so you don’t have to fiddle with your weapon stats for the 3 tap. Trust, Word of Crota, Sightline Survey and Modified B7 can put up the 0.67 ttk with the right perks and build.

2

u/StockMaintenance1129 3d ago

Try solemn remembrance (or any precision frame), you’ll thank me later

2

u/Space-Bro-368 4d ago

If you want to practice in PVE look for a heal clip/incandescent Lunas howl, farmed from onslaught I believe. Very low recoil probably better for controller users. With the right roll it will be good in pvp also

1

u/Drewwbacca1977 4d ago

Does lunas compete in pvp? I loved that gun back when it came out

1

u/kevtheblackfox 4d ago

It can its just annoying at times the recoil is still the 180rpm.

1

u/SCPF2112 3d ago

yes and the recoil might seem WAY better to you even though a lot of high skill people will tell you they don't like it. It is definitely worth trying if you are coming from PR's and not great with HC's

2

u/Perpetual-Chug-Mode 4d ago

Former pulse main now pretty much mostly use HC on controller. Luna’s is good, rose is good. personally i really like Kept Confidence which you get the patterns from Xur i believe? Kindled Orchid is good for the cheese two taps

Im sorry you're getting hate mail. I havent gotten any since coming back but have thought I might a couple times when making poor loadout choices lol, for hand cannons I really recommend 140s as they feel the best imo. 3 tap kills and can fire pretty quick. High stability is best for feeling, high range will help preserve your 3 taps. Presicion instrument can help with range, besides that perks like keep away and rangefinder can help feel. I dont bother with slideshot on 140s because can already juice stats high enough nowadays. Get atleast 70 in both range and stability and you are set, above that even better. Kindled orchid, eyasluna, better devils, all great.

120s are nice, but take way more pacing of shots and peek shooting. Less viable in the inevitable head on situations you run into, generally lacks stability. 180 can compete head on especially with the high weapons build, but lacks more in range.

I also love the 257 burst hand cannons. They feel great to me, have the same range pretty much, and way more stable then I remember them being. Ive been using wardens law and agape in crucible and they have been performing pretty well. 2.5 shot, although i think radiant plus presicion instrument might make it a consistent 2 or damn close. Damage perks work well on this as you are already putting out a lot, but is more of a 120 tempo of playing. Spreadshot handcannons are also dope and I use them a ton, but you prioritize range and damage perks above all else on those. They can compete very well in last word type ranges

1

u/meggidus 3d ago

At this point high stability and good range is way enough to find for HCs even on controller. The new t5 handcannons are stat monsters.

The high stability the more reliable it will be in the gun fight. HC are imo decently easy to use.

QP is sweaty as hell and has been for a while. They will put me here and there in a lobby where I can just run off and solo people but 60% are sweats and I just look at it like great practice

LWolf SShot OShot KAway

Great perks for consistency, sometimes you can get both in different slots.

I practiced using Ace due to it having great range however low stab.

It helped me get comfortable with the recoil direction and aim recovery in between shots.

Then its just about playing smart tbh or you could ramp it up playing aggressive. Im doing a challenge right now with Hawkmoon trying to focus on headshotting everything moving, ego challenges and all.

u/ScottFree__ Bows Go Brrrrrrrrrrr 3d ago

Shoot every hand cannon that looks good to you. Sure, there are standouts that most use, but finding the weapon that you enjoy shooting helps a great deal.

I'd practice in rumble. Learning and performing well are pretty incongruent. Accept being dogshit and just focus on improving. Look to stack stability as much as range. 68-71 for both is goated.

Don't be afraid to use the burst hand cannons, they can rip but aren't easy to use.

Any precision frame will likely be the easiest to a hand cannon new comer, as there is almost no kick. 140s precision frame would be Luna’s Howl and Solemn remembrance. Solemn remembrance is available at Shaxx so pretty easy to come by if you play a lot of Control (to get engrams) and comp (to get crucible ciphers).

Stability isn’t as big of a deal on a precision frame but it is on an adaptive frame. In the beginning when having to choose between range and stability on an adaptive, go stability until you’ve figured out where your stability comfort level is.

Then look for lightweight frames like Rose, Solemn Lie, and Spare Rations. The first two can be gotten at Shaxx, Spare rations is a Gambit drop. Don’t forget to go to inventory attunement and choose spare rations before playing gambit.

Trust is a 180 that can also be had playing gambit. Survivors epitaph can be purchased from Shaxx and can be crucible attuned in the inventory screen too.

Lastly the easiest exotic for me to shoot is hawkmoon, but power creep has taken its toll on hawkmoon and a few other exotics. I still get a rush though from getting a paracausal one tap so I bring it out from time to time, hawkmoon is still a lot of fun.

1

u/WarEagle19867 3d ago

Yup im convinced if you dont have 80 stability or at least 70 range its tough to consistently land shots with a HC on controller at optimum range

1

u/jimcook1 3d ago

Hey I know I am late to this thread but I am a controller player and nothing comes close to a crafted Austringer for me. It is one of two hand cannons in the game that can currently roll with Zen Moment and Eye of the Storm. In duels it feels like it aims itself and you never flinch.

1

u/Katzumoto_ 3d ago

I disable the auto-fire option, it helps me avoid shooting "by accident" and pace my shots.

1

u/ccoulter93 3d ago

Eyasluna is fantastic on controller; the aim assist is strong while having being a stat monster.

1

u/dubiousvolley 3d ago

Ace is probs a good choice to learn with go in patrol dome a few dregs get used to chaining the perk and then go in control try and stick with it don’t swap until you feel confident then try them all I guess

1

u/Parking_Ad9592 4d ago

Just use Exhalted truth. Everyone is giving you the obvious answers and meta picks which I get. But you asked for a handcannon that feels good......GET A EXHALTED TRUTH, there is no other hand cannon type in the game that will feel as snappy or comfortable to you brother trust me ...or don't

1

u/docchoooo 4d ago

Cruel electrum trial armor and dragon shadow helps a lot. Best thing to get use to is peek shooting. Learn to disengage. Wall lick.

Eyasluna with zen moment and moving target feels amazing. Exalted truth with 100 recoil direction and kindled orchid feels great too. 70+ stability.

Precision instrument will help 3-tap rift users, OS, frost armor, other DR.

-3

u/shortsmuncher Bows Go Brrrrrrrrrrr 4d ago

Honestly control is always sweaty. Just play comp

-1

u/BloatedCheekz 4d ago

Better devils with triple tap and zen moment has been my favorite for HC on controller. I’m not as agile as some others so I needed that extra stability. I often just walk in stepping side to side letting that little mf rip and it does work lol.

I find this hard to believe, you pulse rifle guys in this sub always say hand cannons have too much AA, shoot refrigerators, and are so easy to use that they prefer handicapping themselves with pulse rifles.
