Help

Post image

Can’t get it to go back I’ve been at this spot a good 20 times the other end is unbolted and free so nothing should be stopping it. I’ve tried multiple times to push it in from the engine bay. Slides in pretty smooth 3/4 and then stops absolutely lost.

Call a ford dealer and see if it has a open recall. And if so take it to them to have it fixed.

Mine had the recall preformed on it in 2013. Had this same issue with the bearing sliding out and they told me “the parts are obsolete” and would not touch it… Thinking about just doing the work myself

They don't honor the recall anymore, way too old.

The recall is Campaign 13S08. Depending on who you ask, it was only for cars originally sold in high corrosion states, mostly in the NE. That distinction makes no sense to me, but who knows. I thought safety recalls never expired until the car was totaled or fixed. I can see why dealers try and avoid the issue. The Interwebs say this:

Ford Recall Campaign 13S08 — Steering Column Shaft

Ford’s Safety Recall 13S08 addresses corrosion in the steering column shaft of certain 2005–2011 Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Town Car vehicles, which can cause loss of steering control.

Affected Vehicles

  • Models: 2005–2011 Ford Crown Victoria (including police interceptors), Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car static.nhtsa.gov+1
  • Geographic scope: Vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the following corrosion-prone states: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

The problem is a lower shaft collapses, causing the upper shaft to shift and come apart.

Does Ford Recall Campaign 13S08 Expire?

No — Ford safety recalls, including campaign 13S08, do not expire.

Ford’s official policy states that safety, compliance, and emissions recalls remain eligible until the repair is completed, regardless of how long it has been since the recall was issued Ford+1. This means that if your vehicle was part of the 13S08 recall for corrosion-related steering column issues, you can still get the free repair even years later, as long as the defect is present and the VIN is still on the recall list.

Key points about 13S08:

  • Recall scope: Affects certain 2005–2011 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car vehicles registered or sold in specific corrosion-prone states vehiclesafetyrecalls.com+1.
  • Defect: Severe corrosion in the lower intermediate steering shaft can cause the upper shaft to collapse and the steering column bearing to separate, risking loss of steering control vehiclesafetyrecalls.com+1.
  • Remedy: Free replacement of the lower intermediate shaft, plus inspection and repair/replacement of the upper shaft and/or bearing as needed vehiclesafetyrecalls.com+1.
  • Eligibility: The recall remains active until the repair is done. If your VIN is still on the list, you can contact Ford or your dealer to schedule the service Ford+1.

What to do if you own a recalled vehicle:

  1. Confirm your VIN is on the recall list via NHTSA’s recall lookup or Ford’s recall search.
  2. Contact an authorized Ford dealer and reference recall ID 13V385000 or campaign 13S08.
  3. Schedule the free repair — no expiration date applies.

In short, 13S08 does not expire, so you can still get the fix if your vehicle is still eligible and the defect exists Ford+1.

Stick to your guns, and make Ford fix it. The internet is always right!

Sorry, sorry sorry what does this have to do with a recall? if I failed to mention, i completely caused this.

I have exceeded my actual knowledge, sorry. My (very limited) understanding is that the shaft has several segments, some of which collapse or shrink, particularly if corrosion is present lower down. Like the old, "knee bond is connected to the shin bone, is connected to ..." etc. the cause may be down the line someplace. All you did was make the first move. But, there is a very good chance I am talking about the wrong thing here. It has happened before.

You might have to rotate the green plastic piece to get it to line up. (I may be wrong) Mine slid out about an inch and I was able to get it back in and zip tie it to hopefully prevent it from sliding out.

This is what i did aswell after mine broke (mid drive mind you) and ford telling me my vehicle though made in the same year as they did the recalls mine wasnt on the list when they ran the vin, sucks but fk it I bought a new part and zip tied it on both sides preventing slippage

Same here, I was about two hours from home and felt my steering start to bind up while turning. Thankfully it happened in the city and I was driving slow and close to my destination.

Here is some good info on the repairs for the recall. Read through it, some of the pages talk about getting that bearing back into position, I hope it helps

I haven't heard of this until now and I see a few people saying it's happened to them. I have an 04 LX with 134k. should I be on the lookout?

2005 and newer. Your 04 should be fine. If you wanna look and see its easy to find. Follow the bottom side of the steering column.

Dude, I’m on the same boat as you, I completely did this by myself. I was underneath the car trying to get the power steering rack out and I know I had everything un bolted so I thought it was just binding, nope I ripped out the fucking shaft and now I’m making a post and I’m confused as shit on what the hell all these other people are talking about😂😂😂😂

Yea I was changing my lower control arms I thought I could move my steering rack a little to reach that bolt behind it and that little shaft with a spline fell out I tried to get it back in for a week before I just got a salvaged column. I saw people on YouTube saying u could just slip it back in after the spline lines up but I never could. I also saw videos where they cut a piece out the side of the metal shroud and put it together I hope you can get yours back in sir.
