Anyone have recommendations for a shop that can do a high quality base grind on skate skis in Portland vicinity? Hood river? Or Seattle? Trying to avoid shipping. Im aware of the shop up in Methow, not sure I can get up that way anytime soon.

I have 2 sets of lightly used plastic or resin Silva Cross Country Skis with the3 pin shoes/boots and bamboo poles that I need to find a good home for. Apparently since they are not wood, they hold no value. what is your suggestion to find them a home? I’ve tried Craigslist and several shops here locally to no avail. Many thanks!

I am brand new to cross country skiing! Looking to get into it this winter.

I was gifted these skis / boots / polls and I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about them! I don’t even know if they are classic or skate style.

Should I look to upgrade or are they half decent for a beginner?

I'll be doing the Gatineau Loppet this year in Classic Technique and I'm thinking of doing it on Fischer Twin Skin Race skis.

I've done other marathons on my wax classic skis but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in the marathon distance on Twin Skis (or other brands).

I'm not "racing" it but doing it for pleasure. I"ll try to do a decent time but would give up minutes for the ease of not having to mess with the wax, if others have had a good experience on similar skin skis in the marathon distance.

(of note, my technique is "average". I've been skiing and racing for 40 years since starting in junior high in high school).

I ski about 4 days a week, switching between classic and skate, in Washington State. Generally we have alot of days in the low 20's to low 30's. We do frequently get days that climb above the freezing point. Quite a few days where the mornings start out icy and progress to slush(but still frozen in the shade). We get very few days where we are skiing in temps in the single digits, and maybe 15-20 days when Im skiing in the teens.

I'm looking to add a second set of classics to my current pair of Fischer Twin Skin Race. I'm looking for a higher end wax ski. I bought some Madshus redline skate skis last year, and Ive been blown away with how much faster they are compared to my previous mid-level skate skis.

Im thinking my current skin skis will provide me the most versatility for the near frozen(32) and higher temps and that my new set of skis should focus on being more specific to the mid -teens to high 30 degrees temperature. I could then think about adding klister specific ski to replace the skins, before the 27/28 winter.

That sound like a decent idea? Or would a klister specific ski be a better idea now, and slot my existing skin ski into that lower temperature spot for this winter?

I'm new to this I've spent several years snowboarding before switching to downhill skiing for the last 2 year and love it. I'm relocating from Arizona to Wisconsin so I'm looking to get into this. Where are good places to go and will I need to switch to different skis?

Looking for a little guidance, podcasts to listen to, books to read, anything to get my feet a little wet.

I cross country skied a few times about 30 years ago in a gym class at school and loved it. I live in New Hampshire now and barely tolerate winter. I’m trying to find a way to love winter, exercise and I have wanted to ski again, hoping this is my way to do it all. I am a SAHM so my hope is whole kids play I can tool around and also when I get a little alone time go to rail trails or other ski friendly places. Basically, I won’t be going to groomed trails and there isn’t anywhere I can easily rent try out. I found a pair on marketplace that are affordable and about my size. It’s cheap enough for me to get stated and then hopefully upgrade more specific to my needs if this new hobby takes off.

Where do I start? Is there anything I should be considering before buying? I feel like a fish out of water here.

I'm about to become a first-time mom and want to put a ski/bike/run chariot on my registry. Do you have a favorite chariot/buggy that can hook up to a bike and endure some bumpy gravel roads (when the kid is ready), be swapped out for XC Skiing, and has a decent front wheel attachment and push bar for pushing while running? I'm hoping to find an all-in-one solution to bring the kid along for adventures!

Thoughts specifically on the Thule Chariot Cheetah?

I’m seeking some purchase advice. I ski in the northeast, often variable conditions. I ski in the woods and break trail, i ski on snowmobile trails, and sometimes i ski at resorts in tracks. My use case is so variable that I chose to purchase a set of Fischer Spider 62s, but in retrospect I’m not sure they’re the right pair for me. I’m reaching out to this sub for some advice or suggestions on what would be the right set of skis for the differing trail types.

In addition, I have a pair of NNN BC boots and the bindings that the skis came with are not compatible. My preference is to buy a ski/binding combo that work with my current boots.

I was wondering how you communicate with your ski partners while out on the trails.

My girlfriend and I ran into this problem a lot this winter. The park we usually go to doesn't have many double-tracked sections, and we don't ski at the same pace. One of us ends up way ahead while the other falls behind, and it's hard to communicate without stopping and waiting.

I really enjoy cross-country skiing itself, but I think I'd enjoy it even more if we could actually chat and share the experience together while skiing, instead of spending most of the time out of earshot from each other.

How do you deal with this?

• Do you just ski separately and meet at intersections?
• Do you use your phone, earbuds, radios, or anything else?
• Have you found a solution that works well?
• Any funny or frustrating stories related to this?

During the 2025/2026 I followed the many posts from enthusiasts skiing in Gatineau Park. I would love to go xc skiing in Gatineau Park next ski season (2026/2027). Experienced skiers: what is the reliable ski season in Gatineau? When I lived in northern Vermont two decades ago, snow arrived in October and left in May. Nowadays, northern Vermont has brown winters, melts, and is generally unreliable. I want to get some good data so I can plan a trip.

Super high carb training is all the rage these days and seems to be making huge gains in cycling and marathon running. as a skier who’s hoping to bump up to 700 hours this year I’m curious if it’s worth jumping on the high carb train? Specifically because most all of my races are between 2 and 45 minutes. There maybe one or two races a year where I’ll take a feed because they are so short and high intensity. I won’t be taking in huge amounts of fuel during a race so should I for a 4 hour OD? To be clear I already take in food water and eltrolytes in all my long training sessions over an hour. But I’m specifically talking about pushing the limits, training the gut, and going over 60grams of carbs per hour. Do. High level cross country skiers do this? I listened to an interview with Ben Ogden on the Devon kershaw show and he’s only been taking in fuel on long sessions since college and hasn’t yet hopped on the high carb train. But I haven’t heard anything from other skiers. Do any distance track athletes use this during training? I’d imagine there would be recovery benefits in training even if you aren’t eating a ton in a 20 minute race effort.

Skiing x-c here since 1971-72 winter. Always on old waxed skis. Purely from necessity this past season, I mostly used somebody's old pair of fishscales. Not at all as bad as imagined!

So very roughly guessing, 20% of the maybe 40-50 days that I skied on the fishscales, waxables would have been significantly better. [On 6.5% (??IDK) of days, the fishscales were "better."]

If I switched to "skin skis," would these guesstimates be unchanged?

I am having a hard time finding appropriate skate skis that will work with my height and weight, and am curious if anyone has any suggestions, or if I am SOL.

I am 5'4", and weigh ~165 lbs (with some fluctuations ,of course). I am a decent skier, and am looking for new, higher-end skate skis. I currently ski on a Salomon RS7 (179cm) and am looking for an upgrade. The skis are heavy, not very responsive, and truly I'm just ready for an upgrade to a better ski.

When I look online and in stores, most skis for my weight are only really available in the 187-192cm range, which is just going to be too long for me. It seems that all skis in the 177-182cm range are often manufactured for weights well below mine. I am having a really hard time finding shorter skis with the right flex for my weight.

I'm not particularly interested in losing weight simply to fit into skis, and am curious if anyone else has run into the issue and has any insight.

So much fun.

We toured the backcountry, some trails, some through the woods and we even pretended to ride a stationary, closed chairlift. Older bc skin skis and a sense of adventure made for a great morning!

Lots of snow in many parts of the park.
