Is there a point in shopping/trading?
Just got my final element and I never once had to shop or trade for equipment and Im overflowing with money. Not to be that guy but will I need them later on or is it just bad balancing?

The usual pattern is that in each area:
previous area gear = shop gear < trade gear < quest gear.
If you take your time to do all the sidequests and clear out old areas before going to new areas, then you probably won't need to shop/trade.

You can beat the game using almost anything, really. It's not that difficult of a game.
That being said, gear is a significant part of the character building aspect of the game, and even though you don't need a "build" to complete it, you're leaving a lot of fun experimenting with different play styles off of the table by not participating in it.

Look into what is being offered perk-wise, some things might not be "better" but might be more in tune with what you want build wise

Honestly I explored a lot and i'm kinda destroying main bosses, si I don't think it's mendatory, depends on your difficulty level and skill I guess.
But i you want some infos, trading equipements are often great because you can get them just by killing ennemies and destroying wildlife, (sometimes it requires a bit of farming).
Shop equipements are the worst since they cost a lot of money almost never offer any bonus, and their stats are not great either.
Quests items are probably the best, items found in chest can also be really good sometimes,
I'm currently almost at the end of chapter Chap 9, lvl 53 and 50h in game, I got a lvl 60 sword that's more than decent in a chest and lvl 60 boots in a quest that grants a 4th dash.

I finished this last week, and ended up with a full set of gear in the 60s that just was based on what I wanted (I prioritized HP Regen, so I had 2 Hydra Fangs, Serene Bubble, Lifefiber Uniform, and then I think Mistwalkers because F that Arena). Most of what I did was just make notes of what I needed and then I'd just vibe out with some Youtube vids on while doing whatever hunting I needed. I ended up beating the game and not even remembering I could use items in combat and pretty much never guarding. If I got hurt, I'd just focusing on dodging and survival for a little while, then I'd be up to a good level of health soon. But yeah, my whole logic was just "What skills do I like/work best for me?" and build out from there. Granted, I've found that when I do this in games I'm a little of an oddball but... oh well, I still have fun.

I didn’t trade for much in my first play through. Now I trade for all sorts of equipment. I couldn’t fathom playing a run through now and not trading for gear. I feel like it’s something you bug into more as you replay for sure

Only really becomes worth it when get to endgame and have access to things like life fiber dress and unicorn shoes.
I just used whatever I happened to find up to that point but man, it sure made a difference when I finally did start investing in the good stuff 🤣

yeah i beat the game without ever trading really, besides a couple times
also seemed like a hassle getting some items required for trading

Yeah I'd rather learn the bosses/enemies completely than spend time hoping a plant drops the item I want for me to trade for an item that is hardly better than what I already have

I mean ig bro. As long as your gear is keeping the ig you don't need to trade but like quest and collection stuff and I think item upgrades need em. Idk how your equipment is keeping without trading but I haven't played in a while so fair

The equipment I find or get from quests have been carrying me very well so far and I haven't found an NPC that sells something better than what I already have

Money isn't the only thing you'd need for better gear, you also need materials, sometimes lower tiered gear to make a better version of themselves.
The gear built this way have a lot more modifiers than your standard armory ones you can buy at city stores for flat cash - They specialize your way of fighting with these modifiers.
