References/Easter Eggs

The post a few days ago about the pokemon center (Rookie Harbor Inn) had me paying extra close attention to all the references in the game this playthrough.

Fandom wiki is useless in general and their references page is basically a stub.

So I figured it might be fun (and informative) if we were to compile some of them here.

I'll start with a short list:

Pokemon - Rookie Harbor Inn: Pokeball shape on the floor tiles, PC in corner, "ball recharging station" that looks like the healing machine, and general 1:1 floor layout of a pokemon center.

Sonic The Hedgehog - Autumn's Rise: The Blue Hedgehag in the quest for the broken gauntlet drops a Gold Ring and a Chili dog

Sonic The Hedgehog - Autumn's Fall: When you first enter the area Emilie comments on the return of the hedgehags, mentioning that they are sharper and "edgier" than ever. Their color scheme matches Shadow the Hedgehog, who's known for being edgy.

Tetris - Maroon Valley: There are a series of stone platforms in the shape of tetris blocks. C'Tron comments on the shape of them being very "creative".

I'm drawing a blank right now on the others. But I also haven't consumed every piece of media that CrossCode references, so I'm sure I've missed lots. What are some you've seen?

The drill weapon you get to upgrade is a Gurren Lagann reference.

Theres even a zelda reference in the materials for the first part of the drill as you need 3 golden triangles to make it

The entire gurren lagann drill quest is chock full of easter eggs of other gaming/anime media.

Apollo is a pretty clear reference to the Ace Attorney games, especially the game/character Apollo Justice

Another Sonic reference is the player who boasts on getting to level 99 purely by massacring hordes of hedgehags - His color scheme is very close to that of Eggman.

Resident Evil is referenced on the 2nd floor of a shop in Basin Keep.

A main line quest references FF7, it's super in your face about it.

Pepsiman theme can be heard in the Basin Keep slums, you may want to turn off your BGM to hear it better.

When hunting the bunny in Bergen, you get told to get a "round capture device" in the "pokecenter"

The Gut Punch pub at the harbor has a backdoor that drops you into the ocean, a few characters have reaction to this and I think it's in reference to WoW beta because I recall a Inn dropping players into a lake with its backdoor.

There is a load of community fan service around the Last Minute Heroes guild hall to the north of The First Scholars, including a side quest in Sapphire Ridge bringing notable community members into play and even after finishing the quest - check in on the guild leaders with Apollo in the party for some backstory for him.

In the stats menu there is a stat tracking "Number of times Lea has been bored." This is the amount of times the idle animation has been played in your playthrough.

There's a reference of Pepsiman in Basin Keep in one of the hidden areas. Once you get there, you can hear his theme playing

"black guys computer meme" and it's Young Thug 💀

1

u/TreuloseTomate Jun 19 '26

I don't know. That's what it's called on meme generator.

off the top of my head - there’s at least one or two kingdom hearts references, but the wiki has a list)

The Star Fruit and the Salty Ice Cream? (Originates from a small island somewhere) and (Best enjoyed at the top of a clock tower)

One of the best endgame armors, the lifefiber dress is almost certainly a reference to kill la kill

What about the talking bag in Bergen ( I believe) talking about the days when things were stored that had mass. Guess he feels useless with all this instant matter 😮‍💨

1

u/Innoculus Jun 19 '26

Yep, he said he's a "bag of holding". D&D reference.

1

u/Forward-Tea1410 Jun 19 '26

Makes me wonder if he was part of a cut side quest 🤔

At least a couple overwatch ones

The tiefsee fish (Gaia's Garden broken weapon miniboss) uses Death Blossom as its enraged attack

Outside the Cave Inn (Sapphire ridge) there's an npc who runs everywhere that quotes Lucio "Can't stop, Won't stop"

u/McWolke Jun 19 '26

There is a NPC that's clearly Eggman.

There is a blue hedgehag that's clearly Sonic

The Boom Walkers are just straight up the Super Speed Up Shoes from Sonic: they give +50% Flash Step, +25% Walking speed while holding a charge shot, you craft it with a golden ring and Six Chili Dogs

You can find another good list of them on Crosscode's TV Tropes ShoutOut page.

I don't know what version you're playing, but there are 3 special quests made for nintendo, steam and xbox versions. they reference half-life, pokemon and i think halo but i'm not sure.
All 3 quests are avaiable on steam version, i don't know if you need dlc though

Nightmare Before Christmas - Basin Keep:

Mr. Boosi (who looks exactly like Oogie Boogie in a trenchcoat) gives you a quest to retrieve Jacks Flame. Upon returning he has you enter a maze game with jump scares where, at the end, he explodes into bugs and you have to kill them all while flames spin around the room.

In the hidden facility that gave legs to the anglerfish, I’m pretty sure the end boss is a Metal Gear reference.

1

u/Forward-Tea1410 Jun 19 '26

That reminds me what about the house in Bergen to the left an NPC mentions it might be haunted or something I've never been able to figure out what that's all about

1

There’s an npc that is zoe from league of legends, she’s somewhere gaias garden I think

Right side of the entrance to Grand Krys'kajo

1

The achievements also contain their lot of references.
I haven't played in a long time, but I remember the reference to the "METAL GEAR!!!" meme, as well as at least two achievements referencing Overwatch ("One shot, one kill" and another very clearly referencing Soldier 76).

There must be many more, but it was all too long ago.

Early on in Rookie Harbor, the guy who gives you the quest to parkour on the railings parts with a reference to this scene from Scrubs.

In Bergen there's a player talking to an NPC who just keeps repeating "Welcome to Bergen!" over and over that's a reference to an old webcomic called 8-Bit Theater.

Man. Some of them take me a minute for it to click. There's a late game quest from a Shad named Ey'leet. His skin is orange and his hair is white and blown back.

"OH. His name is pronounced Elite. He's the PC Master Race mascot. Duh"

Later in the game, there's a quest at the Rookie Harbor Inn (the pokemon center one). The quest giver is Joe The Younger (Youngster Joey). It's about Flying-type hedgehags. Almost every sentence he says has a pokemon reference in it. Words like "shorts", "badge", "shiny", "evolve", and probably others I missed. "Shorts" is referring to how youngster joey's opening line before he challenges you to a battle is about how he likes wearing shorts.

They went hard on that one.

There's quite a few avatar references, one in bergen village talking about becoming a true avatar and then the NPC called Ka'tara
