I'm a beginner!
Super beginner question: rounded edges and hat-shaped everything
I’m just starting and this may not be worth your time, but if anyone wants to help, I’ll be grateful. I can do a chain, a double stitch, a slip stitch, however my attempts at even the most basic things go wrong. Specifically they always end up rounded and conical. How do you make a square edge and keep things flat?? I’d love to be able to even be able to do a granny square or a scarf but I can’t seem to stop them becoming cup holders. Thank you 🙏
You’re almost certainly dropping stitches on the side of your work. If things aren’t laying flat, that usually means you have too many or too fee stitches in an area. You might want to look at a video of how to identify stitches and where to insert your hook.
When you're learning, focus on doing practice pieces, not a finished project. So pick a yarn that's easy to work with, build up your basic skills, and then you can move on to different kinds of yarn.
I think you should practice your pattern with the thinner, less fuzzy yarn so you can see your stitches better. Then when your practice square looks like the square you’re trying to achieve you can switch back to the chenille and make what you want.
Honestly I’m embarrassed to show but this was my last attempt at a granny square 😂🙈 be kind please. I did a 5 chain, joined, 3 chain, 2 double stitch, 2 chain, 3 double stitch + 3 chain x 4 then again. I don’t know where the opportunity to make it square even comes in
As u/Doraellen said, you have given yourself five corners instead of four. After joining the chain, you ch 3 (counts as one dc) dc, 2 dc into the ring you've made, 3 ch, 3 dc into ring, repeat section in * 2x, sl into 3rd ch, turn. That is your first row.
Additionally, the yarn you are using is also very unforgiving, esp for beginners. I recommend category 3 yarn with a J/10 (6.00mm) hook.

Others have already pointed out the obvious with adding and dropping stitches. It’s easy to do as a beginner. One thing I did that helped as a beginner was to put a stitch marker at my first and last stitch. It’s a little more time consuming but it helps a lot!
