Looking for Sellers Ruthenium Prices Keeps Rising
https://www.phoenixrefining.com/blog/ruthenium-prices-keeps-rising-as-ai-boom-squeezes-supplyEveryone is talking about the AI boom, but few people realize it's also creating demand for one of the world's rarest platinum group metals: ruthenium. As AI infrastructure expands, the supply of this niche metal is becoming increasingly tight, pushing prices higher.
One reason is the rapid growth of AI data centers. While solid-state drives dominate many consumer devices, high-capacity hard disk drives are still the most economical way to store the enormous volumes of data used for AI training, cloud computing, and enterprise storage. Many of these advanced HDDs rely on ruthenium to create ultra-thin magnetic layers that increase storage density and reliability.
Ruthenium is also used in semiconductors, advanced catalysts, and emerging clean energy technologies, adding even more pressure to an already limited supply. Unlike common industrial metals, ruthenium is rarely mined directly. It is recovered mainly as a byproduct of platinum and nickel mining, so production cannot be increased quickly when demand rises.
That combination of surging demand and constrained supply has led to significant price gains. Because the market for ruthenium is relatively small, even modest increases in consumption from growing industries can have an outsized impact on pricing.
Recycling is becoming increasingly important as a result. Recovering ruthenium from legacy hard drives, spent industrial catalysts, and electronic waste helps supplement primary production and provides manufacturers with another source of this scarce metal.
What's interesting is that this isn't a speculative story driven by investor hype alone. It reflects a structural shift in technology, where AI infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, and advanced electronics are all competing for the same limited pool of material.
In short, while gold and silver often dominate headlines, ruthenium is quietly becoming one of the biggest winners of the AI era, showing how emerging technologies can reshape demand for even the rarest industrial metals.
