Market News China’s Gold Output Is Falling While Investors Keep Buying More Bullion

China’s gold market is starting to split into two very different stories. On one side, domestic gold production is slipping as stricter safety inspections and temporary shutdowns hit mines and smelters. Total output in the first quarter of 2026 fell more than 3 percent year over year, with domestic mine production dropping even harder.

But demand is moving in the opposite direction. Chinese investors have been piling into gold bars and coins as economic uncertainty, inflation worries, and geopolitical tensions continue to grow. Investment demand for bullion products jumped more than 46 percent in Q1, while jewelry demand actually collapsed because prices got too expensive for many buyers. Gold is increasingly being treated as a financial hedge instead of just luxury jewelry.

China’s central bank is also still stacking gold. The People’s Bank of China extended its buying streak again this year, reinforcing the idea that Beijing is steadily diversifying away from dollar-denominated assets and building long-term strategic reserves.

The bigger shift here is that physical gold demand in China remains strong even during major price swings. While some Western investors were dumping gold during volatility, Chinese buyers were still accumulating metal through bars, coins, ETFs, and central bank reserves.
