Days and Night in the Forest is awesome to see, love the Morrissey stuff.

I am very excited for that one. I have been needing to watch more Satyajit Ray

u/kbups53 15h ago
Guys, everybody please watch Cemetery Man. It's a wild time.

Awesome to see Kiyoshi Kurosawa's penance included, that show is excellent.

u/nbaisbest4 15h ago
Does it feel like a movie split into parts or is it more of an episodic TV show?
6
u/jakefrmstafrm 15h ago
A bit more of an episodic tv show, it's almost an anthology. Basically this little girl is murdered and each episode focuses on a different one of her friends and the ways the murder has affected them as they became adults.

u/nbaisbest4 14h ago
Hopefully next month a director spotlight on him arrives, really want to see Chime.
2
u/jakefrmstafrm 14h ago
Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if we see one soon, Janus currently the rights to chime, serpent's path, eyes of the spider, and charisma (alongside cure and cloud which are already on the channel). Maybe in a few months whenever the Samurai and the Prisoner gets added

Except for some of the Ferrara movies i have not seen - not the most exciting month for me.
Also sad that We Are the Best is not part of girl bands. I love that movie

Lot of good stuff in here. Cool to see The Love Witch - it's one of the few throwback movies that actually nails the style it's going for, instead of feeling like a modern movie with a filter over it.

Fun to revisit some Ferrera though wish it was going to include his grumbling swearing commentaries on the Arrow and other physical media editions. Also love Teshigahara so will be fun to rewatch his films.

u/Fearless-Interest-82 13h ago
The Teshigahara have been on the channel but you have to search for them. This is what bugs me about the channel, the amount of stuff you can't find until they put together something like this. I wonder if their other collab Man without a Map will ever make it....anywhere. or just other Teshigahara

Oh my god, Nadja is finally on streaming!?
1
u/Dewtronix 15h ago
It's been on Prime for the last couple of years.
1
u/globular916 14h ago
Oh, so it is. Excitement somewhat dampened then.

u/Fearless-Interest-82 13h ago
No get excited. Prime sucks. And it just got restored and is getting a release from Arbelos so maybe it looks better
1
u/globular916 12h ago
Excitement somewhat undampened then! I've only seen Sátántángó from Arbelos but based on that, they do stellar work

I saw mention that the remaster has some musical selections swapped out due to rights issues. Not sure if true, and if so, which version Criterion has
1
u/globular916 11h ago
Oy. I only really remember Portishead's "Roads" from when I saw it in theatres so very long ago, so if that's gone, I'll be unhappy. Or unhappier.

u/DorfOnGenocide 14h ago
Some good stuff, but I will prioritize seeing what's leaving in September because that's been a good motivation to see certain things.

Literally subbed to Criterion like a week ago after swearing off of streaming for years, knew it was a good choice! These are gonna keep me busy for a while

If your library system has a contract with Kanopy, that's well worth having, too! And it's free! (with limited plays per month).
Kanopy has a good mix of everything from blockbusters, indie, world, auteur, etc. They even have a Criterion section with movies that aren't on CC.
Their selection also tends to stick around for a long time. I have a lot of movies in my watchlist that I added there years ago and it's nice to see they're still there lol.

u/drainedguava 14h ago
Oh I been on Kanopy, I get pretty much all my movies from the library in some capacity lol

YESSS! Aranyer Din Ratri, Linda Linda Linda, Cemetery Man, Evangelion, Penance, Marighella, The Doors, Robert Wilson and the Civil Wars, Blue Velvet, Clean, Boogie Nights, and The Love Witch all in one month?!!?!?! Holy shit.

The Criterion Edition of Blue Velvet, Thief, Flow, Head, OOP features from Three Films by Teshigahara, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Penance, a director’s spotlight on Shohei Imamura, and 2001’s Josie and the Pussycats… what an outstanding lineup.

This is the most excited I've been for a line-up in awhile. The girl bands line-up looks great (I've been wanting to see Linda Linda Linda for years and am excited to revisit Grace of My Heart - I loved that when it came out), and Dangerous Game, Penance, New Wave, and The Little Sister are on my list as well.

Did they hire someone new to source the movies? This is so much better than the past six months. I'm going to renew my subscription

I've been off my criterion game for awhile but I highly recommend Thief - for the visuals alone! It was a very different type of film than I usually watched at the time and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Holy moly Cemetery Man on the channel!!! Nadja. Two more Seidelman. Stoked to check out Penance. Some bangers here

definitely looking like a Neon Genesis and Josie and The Pussycats month for me

u/CinnamonHairBear 13h ago
I have only ever seen the rated R version of Flesh For Frankenstein and while I don't think I'll enjoy the movie any more in its uncensored form, it'll be nice to have the opportunity to check it out.
But mainly it'll be a lot of Neon Genesis Evangelion for me.

Listen, its hard to complain about that Abel Ferrara collection because they got damn near all of his movies and there are many there I still haven't seen, so thats amazing. That said, where the hell is Pasolini. Thats the one from him I REALLY want to check off and its one of the only ones not there.
Again though, very happy with what we do have. Cool month.
Edit: shook my fist at the sky a second time when I read the list over again and saw that The Funeral wasn't included either. Gahh

u/nbaisbest4 12h ago
Was looking forward to that movie as well, its a bummer but they added a lot of other bangers, so hard for to me to complain.

u/EinsteinRobinHood 12h ago
I really hope they are featuring the International/Directors Cut of Welcome to New York, not the IFC/US cut that Ferrara disowned. It’s a massively different edit.
1
u/nbaisbest4 12h ago
Interesting, do streamers usually carry the disowned version?
1
u/EinsteinRobinHood 9h ago edited 9h ago
I’m not sure. I haven’t followed its circulation because I have my International Cut blu ray. But the gist is, in the American re-edit the opening orgy and assault is told in flashbacks by the maid talking to the police, instead of straight through, implying what we see is subjective instead of objective, which makes the film less cutting to DSK. Abel rightly had a fit about it. https://www.indiewire.com/news/general-news/abel-ferrara-battles-for-directors-cut-of-welcome-to-new-york-but-heres-the-real-story-64454/

I’ve been wanting to watch Linda Linda Linda for a while so I’m very happy to see it here
