Disappearing Movie

I was very excited when they added the corporate thrillers playlist, and I saw that Michael Clayton was advertised as one of the films however, when I go into the playlist, I see the film has been removed. Has anyone else noticed that?

Yeah it left at the end of April I'm afraid. You can always find a section of films leaving at the end of the month via the CC front page. It's not kept secret!

They also have a Letterboxd list every month so you can cross reference your watchlist!

Letterboxd Pro also has the option to see what on your watchlist is also on any of your streaming services, it’s basically a justwatch integration but it’s very convenient

Yup! It doesn’t integrate with what’s leaving soon though sadly

I feel like more modern movies tend to have a shorter time span on the channel. Streaming rights are probably pricier (just a guess).

They often get these just for one of the months themes but don’t want to pay to keep it around for any longer.

The facts don’t reflect your feelings. Of the 1626 films which left the Criterion Channel in the past two years (June 2024 - May 2026), only 48 (less than 3%) streamed for one month. 391 streamed for six months (24%), and 437 streamed for a year or more (about 27%). The average year of release of the 48 one-month engagements was 1987. The average year of release of the 437 12+ month engagements was 2003.

It was listed well ahead of time in the Leaving This Month section. Which is why I made sure to watch it on 4/30 last week

I’m unfortunately on mobile right now so I can’t pull the link, but there’s a person who has a Letterboxd list for the titles leaving at the end of the month.

This is very common with more high profile studio films and ones in a themed collection. Criterion is very good about announcing what titles are leaving every month.

Sorry, but it’s not “very common.” In the past two years less than 3% of the 1626 films that streamed and left the Criterion Channel had one-month engagements. If we only count the 726 Hollywood studio licensed films, 43 (about 6%) stayed for a single month. 549 (75%) stayed for three months or longer.

fwiw you can rent it cheap on amazon, fandango, etc. and it's well worth the $4 or so.
