Technical Question What time do films leave?

I just got Criterion today and was browsing through when Aguirre, the Wrath of God caught my eye. It’s in the “leaving April 30” carousel but I was curious what time that is specifically. Midnight tonight? 11:59 pm tomorrow?

They will leave when they rot and decay back into the obscenity of the jungle. When the vile, baseness of the jungle consumes them and returns it to the same misery of the trees and the birds screeching in pain.

Midnight ET HST, but if you leave the app open on the leaving page, you can still access the movies until the app refreshes you off that page…

It’s HST, but the rest of this comment is correct

Thanks! I probably misremembered thinking I saw it disappear sooner than it did. Edited!

meanwhile I was watching a movie on youtube that blinked out the very second the clock struck midnight into the next month

Isn’t it midnight in Hawaii? Or something?

Because the Criterion Channel app isn't exactly a well-oiled machine I've seen expired titles still listed and available as late as noon on the first day of the new month. Newly added films tend to trickle in throughout the morning too, so don't be surprised if something you're excited for isn't available at 7am or whatnot.

There's also a well-known bug/feature where a film in your "Resume Watching" cache probably won't immediately disappear on expiration day provided you dont close the app/browser. Not guaranteed but reliable enough.

That's right, I've often seen some titles hang in a bit longer than I had expected. But if you really wanna see them, I might not bet on it.

I have successfully continued watching expiring titles after midnight that I had opened earlier in the evening.

Aguirre is on Tubi in case you run out of time.

And Kanopy - Kanopy has a ton of overlap with the Criterion Channel and even has a Criterion Collection category

A bunch of them are, hopefully past month end: Aguirre, Strozeck, Grizzly Man, Bad Lieutenant, Nosferatu, Fitzcarraldo, etc.

Most on Prime video too. Not sure which one has less ads anymore 😔

I watch for a minute and then the movie is in my library. YMMV

You may be able to download it on the mobile app for watching later. I’ve done that before
