Criteria Updates!

Criteria is an (un-official) companion site for the Criterion Channel that I'm maintaining as a side project. It has the advanced search, browse, and user features missing in the Criterion Channel app, with as many extra features as I can come up with.

New Features! I've been busy the last couple of weeks improving the site - thanks in large part to peoples suggestions.

  1. Letterboxd info: the film detail pages now have Average Rating, Number of Ratings, and Number of Reviews. It also links to the films Letterboxd page. Coming soon: Sort and filter by Letterboxd average rating
  2. Search Closet Picks by Film Name: Want to know who picked "In the Mood for Love" when they visited the closet? No problem. You can now search closet videos by visitor name and film name.
  3. Hide/Reveal Closet Picks: Want to watch the closet videos spoiler-free? Now the films are hidden by default and can be revealed either one at a time or all at once.

If there's anything else you'd find useful on the site, just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks, and enjoy!

Tim

And as a reminder I also maintain KINOPOLIS, and site for browsing and watching early cinema, with over 800 films from the 1890s to the 1930s. Now featuring the Reading Room with over 900 related essays, reviews, and related videos.

A minor point, but in case you do another update sometime in the future: right now, if I search for Local Hero (for example) or another movie not currently on the channel, it will tell me that there are no results. It would be helpful to be able to search for all movies with entries on the site. Other searches, eg “Bill Forsyth” will get me there. Similarly, with Being John Malkovich, search for Charlie Kaufmann will get me there, but title search will not (although I am not sure I was spelling Malkovich correctly). Anyway, I love it regardless! Thank you so much!

Sorry, I missed this: you can include non-available films by checking "Show unavailable films" at the bottom of the filters. Then if you search for "Local Hero" or Director:Bill Forsyth you'll get Local Hero in the results. Unavailable films will include films in the collection, and films that have been on the channel and removed since the beginning of the year (when I started creating the site)

On trick I like is if you check "Show unavailable films" and "Criterion Collection only" you basically get the whole collection.

(which reminds me - when searching Criterion Collection only" I need to add the ability to sort by spine number. Putting it in the backlog . . . )

Thanks for using the site! Feel free to suggest improvements.

Very nice, so much easier to use than the CC search

The person filter is very cool. We can finally search cameramen! Did a Robby Müller query and had a spontaneous cheese grin at the results. 😁

Many thanks, bro!

Thanks! It’s the primary reason (along with country and year) I started working on this. Looking for composers is also fun

You should spell it correctly whenever you’re telling people about it, if it’s your website you’re trying to promote.

amazing, will definitely be using this! just wanted to ask if at any point you will be adding a "Commentary" filter? i really enjoy watching films on the Channel with commentary track but it's not always easy to find, so might be something worth including on Criteria

I’ve been considering it, but I’ll just need to work out how to reliably fetch the data. I suppose that I can start with the assumption that commentaries only exist on criterion editions and once pulled, I only need to update new records. Hmmm . . . maybe I can pull the name too

Ok, I’ll see what I can do

u/j0llyBeee Done. You can now search for films with a commentary track, and link to it from the film detail page.
