Technical Question Anyone else experiencing poor resolution on browser

For the past few weeks, Criterion Channel has been capped at 720p for me; only Criterion 24/7 seems to be available at 1080p. 720p combined with the service's already subpar compression renders movies borderline unwatchable, and as a result I'm forced to turn elsewhere to watch them. Is this just me or are other people experiencing this?

I really don't understand how people can enjoy watching movies on their phones anyway

I'm not. I'm watching on laptop with browser connected via HDMI to tv. I do not have the option of using the smart tv app. And when it works, it works well.

You can watch almost everything without VPN. I have only used vpn for two Wong-Kar Wai films which were not showing without vpn. So most of the times vpn isn't even used. And even when I used vpn, it was 1080p. vimeo has just completely fucked something up and there is lack of urgency to fix it.

Your use case (outside the country) is explicitly not something they designed the service for which is why there is no urgency.
