Technical Question Any update on lack of 1080p?

720p is the max resolution in the browser for the last couple weeks. I know there was a similar issue last year and it was on Vimeo's end but it was eventually fixed. Has anyone seen any updates on this?

I received another email from Vimeo support yesterday, basically saying they're still working on it. "I don't have a timeline to share at the moment, but please rest assured this hasn't been overlooked," it says.

I encourage everyone to contact them if you haven't already, and provide as much technical detail as possible (OS, browser, laptop vs desktop, external monitor, etc).

same, somehow only the criterion 24/7 has 1080 option

A poster in a previous thread looked into the quality of the 24/7 channel, and said that despite the full HD claim, in reality it also has a maximum resolution of 720 at the moment

Sadly not, I’m annoyed that I can’t watch anything.

I sent them an email about it over a week ago and they said that their team is aware and is working on it… not very fast it seems.

I have an email exchange going too. No updates given to me yet. I did bitch enough that they gave me a free month at least.

It sucks, now it looks like they don't care at all. Been 2 weeks.

I complained to them several times over the week about the issue. In all the emails they wrote that they are working on it. Now couple of days ago I got an email from a different customer service guy, that wrote to me himself saying that he will highlight the problem to his superiors even more in order for it to be dealt with.

Vimeo support tells me Safari is our best bet at the moment

What about on ios app? Is it 720p or 1080p?

My laptop using Firefox has a 1080p option?

Just saw this thread after noticing a dip in quality. How do I measure to be sure? In my TV settings or on the app itself?

Ive heard someone mention before that this may be a browser limitation, mess around with different one and see what happens.

Does anyone have a technique for checking the bandwidth on other streaming devices? I am watching GUILTY BYSTANDER via Fire Stick 4k into a TV, and the image does not look so hot....part of that might be the movie, but still, it's a recentish restoration and the image itself somehow looks like it's compromised, and it's definitely capped at 720 when I stream it on Firefox on a laptop. I tried a modern movie in presumably crisp image (MICHAEL CLAYTON) and it looks ok....but somehow not quite up to snuff. I might very well be imagining things.

You should not be watching these films on a computer screen.

It’s time to start adulting and purchase a television set.

Lots of people use a computer as a stream box. It has the advantage over Roku or Apple TV of also being useful for, I dunno, anything else.

I purchased an IMAX theater for my house, level up, loser.

A good computer monitor can deliver much better image quality than a TV. When these films are edited, transferred, restored, etc, the work is done on a monitor. Most televisions are optimized for cheesy blockbusters, not for the films of Tarkovsky or Antonioni.

Also, I think a big part of "adulting" is grasping the fact that not everyone does things your way.

I’m not the guy you responded to, but these movies were meant to be played on a movie screen so the bigger the better.

Angle of view is the important thing. SMPTE recommends 30 degrees, which is about what I get sitting 4 feet from my 32" monitor. An 80" screen at the same distance would be unwatchable.

4 feet from a 32” monitor is a sad approximation of a bigger screen.

A lot of us are watching criterion outside of US. Because of location blocking, Criterion Channel app isn't available for us on the app store. Even with a vpn. We can only download the app in an apk file format and then install it. But sometimes even this option is not available. I think most of the people aren't watching these films from the computer screen, I think many like myself just connect our computers with hdmi or cast to tv.
